New Found Records, Program EP 590 (The Man In Black)
DESCRIPTION/PLAYLISTS/BREAK TIMES Airs October 24, 2020 on CHMR 93.5 FM
DESCRIPTION
American country music superstar Johnny Cash has been in the local news lately following the discovery of photos of his moose hunting adventure in Newfoundland some 60 years ago. So we’ve put together a program filled with an eclectic mix of great Cash music… a mix of songs that you won’t hear any place else.
So if you’re a fan of ‘The Man in Black’ then this show is for you! The man that Ron Hynes called Newfoundland’s Johnny Cash, Dick Nolan, he was a hugh Cash fan. In fact he idolized Cash., and Dick’s voice was remarkably similar to that of Johnny’s. In fact Nolan filled his first two albums with nothing but Johnny’s songs. And a few years later. Dick released yet a 3rd LP of Cash favourites. Tune in to this episode of NFR and you’ll get a rare chance to hear a track from each of those awesome recordings.
Plus, you’ll hear St. John’s bluesman Peter Narvaez stellar rendition of Cash’s Rock ’n’ Roll Ruby, the title song from Peter’s only vinyl record. Little Johnny Cameron is in Irish mode as he covers Cash’s Forty Shades of Green and we’ll spin Roy Payne’s Tribute to Johnny Cash from an obscure single by Scott Rowsell and Aquarius. And there’s lots more Cash gems too, all sung by Newfoundland’s recording artists from the vinyl era.
Oh, and by the way, Johnny got his moose!
