ADDRESS BY HEADTEACHER The Headteacher thanked those present for coming out to the meeting and introduced himself, the Chair of Governors and the Clerk who would be recording the meeting. He then outlined, with the aid of a screen presentation, the considerations which had led to the Governing Board’s decision to both reduce the current Published Admission Number (PAN) and withdraw sixth form provision at Bridgnorth Endowed School (BES). The key focus points of the presentation were as follows: FALLING PUPIL DEMOGRAPHIC Pupil numbers had gone through a sustained period of decline within Bridgnorth. There had been a 20% drop-off of pupils aged 11-18 for local secondaries to draw from over the past ten years. An even bigger drop, of 40%, had been sustained in children following a course for 16-19-year-olds in the town. Reasons for this decline were complex, the Head said, but a clear factor was the increasing desire of pupils to go further afield to study at this stage of their education. With more children aspiring to university it was a good interim step, offering a taste of independence and a sense of new horizons.

    8th September 2010 Glider Challenge to Mark Anniversary of Battle of Britain To mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, instructors from RAF Cosford have designed a Glider Challenge for local youngsters. The STEM Ambassadors event will take place on 15th September 2010 at the RAF Museum Cosford. Several Shropshire and West Midlands schools have accepted the challenge to design and build a 2 metre long glider from basic materials such as willow, tape and plastic sheets. The gliders, which will transport a bottle of water, will best test flown from a raised platform. Each team will be judged on the distance travelled by their glider; glider design, build quality and team organisation. The aim of the Glider Challenge is to promote science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) whilst providing a link to and raising awareness of the historical events of the Battle of Britain against the backdrop of the RAF Museum’s impressive displays. Sgt Tony Soulsby, Event Organiser says: “This is the second STEM Ambassadors Glider Challenge and the event has proved popular with local schools. The RAF Museum is a fantastic backdrop for the event and is very relevant with 2010 marking the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain.” The event will run from 9.30am to 3.15pm. Planning for next steps takes time, so starting early is strongly advised. Some students may be clear on the path they wish to take, others will be more anxious and unsure about making these important decisions.
