With more than 1,500 years of cultivation, it is hard to argue against the Musique et Vin festival by holding an auction for special bottles donated by winemakers this belief. However, to The Wine Forum, Burgundy is more than just pure, scholarly wine. To us, whom we will be visiting and splitting the proceeds equally between these two worthy causes. Burgundy represents all that we as a group stand for—that is, that fine wine is not a right, but a And what a tour we have lined up! We commence with a Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru tasting privilege. Speaking with the region’s very top winemakers, they resolutely believe they are merely the current custodians of cherished plots, and that their role is to make the best wines possible at the Château du Clos de Vougeot on the final night of the 2014 Musique et Vin Festival. This and pass on the vineyard in the best condition possible to the next generation. Working the soil fabled region hosts 9 Grand Cru vineyards, the most of any in Burgundy.

  • France Few Regions Can Claim the Fame and Admiration That Burgundy BURGUNDY Has Enjoyed Since the Second Century
France Few regions can claim the fame and admiration that Burgundy BURGUNDY has enjoyed since the second century. Comprised of the Chablis, Côte d’Or, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais and Beaujolais regions, Burgundy occupies a long and narrow stretch of vineyards in eastern France. The critical effect of terroir in Burgundy is expressed in its complex classification system. • Vineyards are divided into separate appellations along terroir France boundaries; the full range of classification levels from broadest to the most distinguished follows: District (e.g. Beaujolais or Chablis), Village (e.g. Pommard), Premier Cru (e.g. Pommard les Rugiens) and Grands Cru (e.g. Clos Vougeot). • As a result of Burgundy’s rules of inheritance, vineyard ownership is quite fragmented, with multiple owners for most crus. The Clos de Vougeot vineyard, for example, is split between 80 different owners. • Though soils vary, clay and limestone predominate in the Côte d’Or and granite is common in Beaujolais. Clos de Vougeot 2015 Grand Cru- 100% Pinot Noir Clos Vougeot is a large vineyard (50 hectares - 125 acres) located bewteen Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny. Joseph Drouhin owns two parcels in this mythical vineyard, both on a mild incline with a due east exposure. History & Tradition: • The most glorious and famous of all Burgundy vineyards. • The Clos (French for “enclosure”) was first planted and surrounded by a wall at the end of the 12th Century by the monks of Citeaux. They built a castle which is now the seat of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. • Soil: very diverse and a true mosaic, a mix of clay and limestone in various pro- portions. Drouhin estate: 0,90 ha. (2.25 acres). Average of the vines: 31 years. Viticulture: • Biological cultivation since 1990; biodynamic cultivation a few years later. • Soil maintenance: compost of manure and white wood, sometimes guano (sea- bird manure used as fertilizer). Soil is ploughed either by tractor or by horse to manage spreading of weeds. • Treatment: only authorized products for biological cultivation are used: infusions and macerations of plant materials, sulfur and copper, powdered rock. Natural predators are not eliminated. • Plantation density: from 10,000 to 12,500 stocks/ha in order to extract all possible nuances from the ter- roir and limit the production of each vine stock. Pruning: Guyot. • Yield: we aim to keep our yields low, more in line with the previous regulation: around 20% less than al- lowed by the current law. Vinification: • Harvesting: by hand, in small open crates in order to preserve the integrity of the fruit.

  • WINGROWING REGION ROUNDUP by Matt Kettmann the Happy Canyon AVA: Where Sunshine Powers Wine to Rival Bordeaux’S Best by Matt Kettmann
WINGROWING REGION ROUNDUP by Matt Kettmann The Happy Canyon AVA: Where Sunshine Powers Wine to Rival Bordeaux’s Best By Matt Kettmann In the early days of Santa Barbara County winemaking, the pioneers planted plenty of Cabernet Sauvignon, then California’s go-to grape. But to their dismay, much of the region proved too chilly for the Bordeaux varietal, and the resulting wines were embarrassingly vegetative, smelling of green pepper with a taste somewhat reminiscent of asparagus. The region eventually evolved into other grapes, locating the hot spots for Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc and cool zones for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Then, as if discovering a long-lost friend, growers realized that the Santa Ynez Valley’s sunshine- soaked eastern end was hot enough to keep Cabernet and its Bordelaise sister grapes quite happy. Indeed, winemakers quickly discovered that not only do the Bordeauxs thrive, but they’re distinctively elegant, and so in 2009, the area — officially known as Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara — was granted its own appellation. “It’s unique here,” said Doug Margerum, who makes wines for Happy Canyon Vineyards and Cimarone Estate Wines. “There are days when you feel the heat of the high desert coming down the hill and swirl with the maritime breezes. It’s a pretty special place, and very much deserving of its own AVA.” Margerum, who’s been involved in the Santa Barbara wine business for three decades, credits the climate, soil, and steepness of certain vineyards for the quality shown in the Cabernet Sauvignons, Cabernet Francs, Merlots, Malbecs, Petit Verdots, and Sauvignon Blancs emerging from the region.
