To the north, past the Combe Lavaux - Jean Roland Nature Reserve, where wildowers grow and peregrine falcons and eagles nest, lies the regional capital of Dijon. The city boasts a rich blend of architecture alongside the magnicent palace of the Valois Dukes, now home to the Museum of Fine Art. The walks provide a wonderful balance of quiet country lanes, vineyard tracks and woodland trails taking in sleepy, unspoilt villages, majestic vine-clad hills and ancient oak forest. Sample ne wines in 13th century cellars and enjoy lunch in a selection of medieval towns including world-renowned Nuits-St-Georges. Walk the historic streets of Dijon and hunt for trufes with Yann and his dog Elfe in the grounds of a secluded chateau. This area is popular with gastronomes and for good reason! Your luggage is transferred and route notes and maps are provided. The route notes contain a 24-hour emergency assistance telephone number. In emergency, the hotels are normally able to dispatch a taxi or pick you up themselves. They may wish to charge for this service. Adult min age: 18 Child min age: 12 Child max age: 17 Itinerary Land Only Start City: Beaune End City: Beaune Land Only Itinerary Day 1 Arrive in Beaune Take time to discover this lovely city and marvel at the multi-coloured roofs of the 15th-century Hospices de Beaune just two minutes from your hotel. Day 2 Beaune to Gevrey-Chambertin Cross the limestone escarpment of the Côte d’Or with wonderful views across the plain. Descend to the village of Chenôve and wind your way along the Chemin des Grand Crus to Gevrey-Chambertin. Stay the night at the Rotisserie de Chambertin. Meals included: Breakfast Distance covered: 14 km / 9 miles Day 3 At Gevrey-Chambertin Options today include taking the train to Dijon or Beaune. In Dijon stroll the history-lled streets and alleyways with 12th-15th century timbered houses to see the Church of Notre Dame, cathedral and the grand Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy. In Beaune marvel at the multi-coloured roofs of the 15th century Hospices de Beaune. Meals included: Breakfast Day 4 Gevrey-Chambertin to Vosne-Romanée Leave the vines behind today and head up into the woods where you'll follow an old disused railway track. Wind through shady, protected woodland before emerging back into the sun-soaked vines behind tranquil Morey-St-Denis, a good place to enjoy a coffee break. Continue on through the sleepy village of Chambolle-Musigny to Vougeot and visit the historic Chateau du Clos de Vougeot which produces one of the world's most celebrated Grand Cru wines. Meals included: Breakfast Distance covered: 12 km / 7.5 miles Day 5 At Vosne-Romanée There are two options for your 'rest day'. You could walk up through the woods to a secluded chateau in the hills, behind the vineyards of Vosne-Romanee - here you have the opportunity to learn about trufe hunting in the chateau grounds with Thierry, his son Yann and their specially trained dog Elfe (Thursday to Monday only). Alternatively take a stroll through the vines to the world-famous medieval town of Nuits-St-Georges. Explore the town and enjoy lunch here, then maybe a spot of wine tasting in one of the many local caves. Meals included: Breakfast Day 6 Vosne-Romanée to Beaune A 25-minute transfer takes you to Pernand-Vergelesses to follow vineyard tracks past the Hill of Corton, once owned by Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne. Then it's on to medieval Savigny-les-Beaune for a morning coffee next to the impressive chateau, which houses a collection of vintage cars, motorbikes and planes. Walking up through woodland, you emerge above Beaune with spectacular views over the town and its surrounds. Descending into the vineyards you can visit the Parc de la Bouzaise or Beaune before continuing on to the hotel. Self-guided cycling lends itself perfectly to picnics, it is always a good option to pick up some local produce and then pick a spot along your route to stop and eat it. For dinner you will be spoilt for choice; Burgundians are passionate about both their food and wine. Boeuf Bourguignon (a stew with beef in red wine), Escargots à la Bourgogne (snails) and Coq au Vin (chicken braised with wine) are arguably the most famous exports but the prime local ingredients are expertly showcased in countless mouthwatering dishes. Common main ingredients are pigeon, quail, boar, venison and freshwater sh. You will nd many small, independent suppliers offering local pates, cheese, sausages and mustard, synonymous with Dijon. Food markets are a delight to visit - support for individual artisan food producers is something the region excels in. Weather & Seasonality Weather Information Burgundy is situated in the heart of France and usually has warm or hot summers with a continental feel to them. Generally the summer months are warm and dry, with rainfall averaging 6cm per month in July and August. The climate in Spring and Autumn is a mixture of sun and scattered showers with temperatures in the mid 20s (degrees celcius). If no facilities are available there may come a time when you need to go to the loo behind a tree/bush/rock. To avoid leaving toilet paper behind we recommend taking biodegradable dog poo/sandwich bags with you. Once you have done your business you can pop the used toilet roll in here and take it off the mountain or trail at the end of the day and dispose of it when there are appropriate facilities available.
