Jekyll and Hyde Plot, Themes, Context and key vocabulary booklet Name: 1 2 Plot Mr Utterson and his cousin Mr Enfield are out for a walk when they pass a strange-looking door Chapter 1 - (which we later learn is the entrance to Dr Jekyll's laboratory). Enfield recalls a story involving the Story of the door. In the early hours of one winter morning, he says, he saw a man trampling on a young girl. He Door chased the man and brought him back to the scene of the crime. (The reader later learns that the man is Mr Hyde.) A crowd gathered and, to avoid a scene, the man offered to pay the girl compensation. This was accepted, and he opened the door with a key and re-emerged with a large cheque. Utterson is very interested in the case and asks whether Enfield is certain Hyde used a key to open the door. Enfield is sure he did. That evening the lawyer, Utterson, is troubled by what he has heard. He takes the will of his friend Dr Chapter 2 - Jekyll from his safe. It contains a worrying instruction: in the event of Dr Jekyll's disappearance, all his Search for possessions are to go to a Mr Hyde. Mr Hyde Utterson decides to visit Dr Lanyon, an old friend of his and Dr Jekyll's. Lanyon has never heard of Hyde, and not seen Jekyll for ten years. That night Utterson has terrible nightmares. He starts watching the door (which belongs to Dr Jekyll's old laboratory) at all hours, and eventually sees Hyde unlocking it. -

I joined the Tender Years family in December 2011! I have been working in childcare since 1991 and have always worked in an Infant/Toddler position. I love teaching this age group because of the kids’ eagerness to learn! Being able to help aid in a child’s learning and development is the most rewarding experience for me. 1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour. -

Saxton The Ecological Footprints of Tiny Home Downsizers: An Exploratory Study Maria W. Saxton ABSTRACT With our country’s unsustainable building practices in the residential sector, there is a need to explore new types of housing to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of current building customs. Recently, there has been a surge of interest in tiny homes characterized as livable dwelling units typically under 400 square feet. However, there is a gap in scholarly knowledge that formally examines how the environmental impact and behaviors of tiny home occupants change after downsizing from a larger home. The purpose of this study was to provide measurable evidence to explore the relationship between downsizing to a tiny home and the corresponding environmental impact. This study, which employed an exploratory sequential mixed design approach, was conducted to measure the ecological footprints of tiny home downsizers. Eighty individuals who have lived in their tiny homes for at least a year volunteered to take an online survey used to calculate their ecological footprints in prior larger homes and current tiny homes. Following the survey, nine interviews were conducted to create an inventory of noteworthy behaviors in each participant’s lifestyles that potentially influence ecological footprint changes. -

FRIENDS OF Acknowledgements The Beachcombers Field Guide is an easy to use identifi cation tool that describes some of the more common items you may fi nd while beachcombing. For easy reference, items are split into four simple groups: • Chordates (mainly vertebrates – animals with a backbone); • Invertebrates (animals without a backbone); • Seagrasses and algae; and • Unusual fi nds! NEW NEVERLAND Rowan Lopez Forkey May 2020 Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in Fiction Writing Sarah Lawrence College 2 This is a linked short story collection exploring the themes and characters of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. The setting is modern day London, wherein the Lost Boys are a gang of teenage orphans, led by Peter Pan. Their rival gang is the Pirates, comprised largely of older, adult men. Peter meets Wendy, a studious middle class girl from a happy family, and starts spending much of his time with her, to the chagrin of his best friend Tink, who is wealthy but has few friends outside of Peter. This portion of the thesis ends with a Greek chorus-style musing from the mermaids. Each story treads the same general plot points, each taking on new meaning of the story (and the other characters involved) through different unique viewpoints. Following the Peter Pan stories are two other selected short stories: one about two male hustlers trying to survive in Portland, Oregon and another about the first son of the United States as he comes to terms with various relationships in his life. -

Constellation Legends by Norm McCarter Naturalist and Astronomy Intern SCICON Andromeda – The Chained Lady Cassiopeia, Andromeda’s mother, boasted that she was the most beautiful woman in the world, even more beautiful than the gods. Poseidon, the brother of Zeus and the god of the seas, took great offense at this statement, for he had created the most beautiful beings ever in the form of his sea nymphs. In his anger, he created a great sea monster, Cetus (pictured as a whale) to ravage the seas and sea coast. Since Cassiopeia would not recant her claim of beauty, it was decreed that she must sacrifice her only daughter, the beautiful Andromeda, to this sea monster. So Andromeda was chained to a large rock projecting out into the sea and was left there to await the arrival of the great sea monster Cetus. As Cetus approached Andromeda, Perseus arrived (some say on the winged sandals given to him by Hermes). He had just killed the gorgon Medusa and was carrying her severed head in a special bag. When Perseus saw the beautiful maiden in distress, like a true champion he went to her aid. Facing the terrible sea monster, he drew the head of Medusa from the bag and held it so that the sea monster would see it. Immediately, the sea monster turned to stone. Perseus then freed the beautiful Andromeda and, claiming her as his bride, took her home with him as his queen to rule. Aquarius – The Water Bearer The name most often associated with the constellation Aquarius is that of Ganymede, son of Tros, King of Troy.
