Columbia Winery 2017 Gradient Red Blend Columbia Winery 2017 Gradient Red Blend For more than 50 years, Columbia Winery has embraced a legacy of progressive winemaking that has led its forward-thinking winemakers to discover new grape varieties, vineyards and blends. Today, Winemaker Sean Hails continues this spirit of innovation, handcrafting a distinct collection of food- friendly wines from Washington State. Here, intense sunlight, coupled with a lack of rainfall, translates to deeply concentrated color, flavor and structure in the glass. Located just outside of Seattle, the iconic Columbia tasting room offers daily tastings and Northwest-inspired offerings. About the Wine: From aroma to finish, our 2017 Columbia Winery Gradient Red Blend offers the power and presence of a classic Bordeaux-style blend. Layers of dark cherry and black olive open in the glass with hints of toasted oak and baking spice. Blending 50% Cabernet Sauvignon in the 2017 creates a solid structure, firm tannins and ample elegance. Adding 29% Merlot delivers layers of silky tannins and balance to the wine. Viticulture Notes Fruit for the 2017 Gradient Red Blend was sourced from “the best of the best” sites around Washington, according to our winemaker Sean Hails. The 2017 growing season brought us cooler-than-average weather and challenged us to be patient and wait for ripeness in our reds. It was worth the wait. We harvested fruit with deeply concentrated fruit characteristics, a slightly reduced amount of acidity and supple mouth filling tannins. Winemaking Notes: After harvesting in October 2017, the grapes for this wine were destemmed at the winery and transferred to tanks. Fermentation occurred at 88°F in small- lot, stainless steel tanks, both open and closed top. During fermentation, pump overs and punch downs were used for intense extraction of color and flavor. Malolactic fermentation was completed to deliver a round mouthfeel. All lots were barrel aged for 18 months in 100% French oak barrels (48% new), more new oak compared to the last vintage. Varietal Content: 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 7% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc Appellation: Columbia Valley Alcohol Content: 15% Titratable Acidity: 5.6g/L pH: 3.72 Bottling Date: August 6, 2019 Cases Produced: 676 www.columbiawinery.com | www.facebook.com/columbiawinery Washington Table Wine, ©2020 Columbia Winery, Richland and Woodinville, WA. • Redwood Creek Winemaker Sean Hails Grew up in Ontario, Canada
Columbia Winery™ 2020 Columbia Valley Syrah Rosé With roots dating back to 1962, Columbia Winery has been discovering and celebrating Washington wine for over 55 years. Columbia’s forward-thinking philosophy continues today in the hands of a talented and innovative winemaking team led by Winemaker Sean Hails. We believe the sum of Washington is greater than its parts, inspiring winemaking and blending philosophies rooted in discovery, sourcing our fruit from across a range of Washington’s premier AVAs. Guided by our vision of high quality, approachable wines, each season we select premier vineyard sites, refine our oak regimen and cellar techniques to impart nuance, texture, and complexity in our wines. About the Wine: The 2020 Columbia Valley Syrah Rosé is a mouthwatering, Provence-inspired wine made in Washington. In the glass, our Rosé reveals a pale pink the color of ballet tulle encircled in pale blue. Creamier than previous vintages, this Rosé bursts with aromas of strawberries with whipped cream, white blossom and ruby red grapefruit. One sip releases layers of Mandarin orange, tangerine slices and watermelon. The wine is dry, medium-light bodied with a tart, citrus effervescence that shines through the finish. Enjoy this Rosé now. Should you choose to lay it down, the pink color will stay beautiful. Enjoy with shrimp salad, oysters on the half shell, Caprese salad with melon or roast chicken with capers and lemon or a charcuterie board with thick-cut potato chips. Viticulture Notes: For our 2020 Rosé, we selected Syrah for its bright fruit characteristic and Chardonnay grapes to add layers and creaminess to the blend from the Columbia Valley AVA.

  • [SLIDE 1] Thank You, Sharyn. for the Two
[SLIDE 1] Thank you, Sharyn. For the two presentations we’re doing on Zoom, I’ve adapted the National Tasting Project presentation that Melissa Bartlett put together for the chapters. That presentation is also available to you and has some references should you like more information on Washington Wines. For today’s session we will be discussing 6 of the National Tasting Project wines. Hopefully you’ve had an opportunity to judge the wines before we started today and can now sit back, relax with a glass of one of the wines as I go through today’s wines and the American Viticultural Areas, or AVAs, they represent. [SLIDE 2] The 2020 National Tasting Project is a study of Washington State. Over the last 20 years Washington has grown from 4 AVAs to 14 approved. We’ll also talk a little about their newest proposed AVA later on in today’s presentation. [SLIDE 3] Ste. Michelle Wine Estates was chosen to be this year’s wine supplier due to their availability nationwide. Unfortunately, much of Washington state wines are not distributed outside of the state. One of Ste. Michelle Wine Estate’s wineries, Chateau Ste. Michelle is Washington state’s founding winery. While it has been known as Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery only since 1967, it can trace its roots back to 1934. The 1,000th winery was licensed in last year. Today there are 10 more active licensed wineries in the state. [SLIDE 4] [2m:34s video] Let’s hear take a couple minutes and hear it from Washington State Wines.

  • Columbia Winerytm 2015 Horse Heaven Hills Legacy Red Blend
Columbia WineryTM 2015 Horse Heaven Hills Legacy Red Blend In 1962, a relentlessly curious group of friends sought to prove the world-class quality of Washington wines, establishing what would become Columbia Winery. Over the years, Columbia Winery has embraced a legacy of progressive winemaking that has led its forward-thinking winemakers to discover new grape varieties, vineyards and blends. This spirit of innovation and crafting a distinct collection of wines from renowned Washington growing regions continues with our Winemaker, Sean Hails. Here, intense sunlight and low rainfall translate to deeply concentrated color, flavor and structure in the glass. About the Wine: A classic Bordeaux-style blend, our 2015 Columbia Winery Legacy Red Blend has power and presence from aroma to finish – a tribute to our own legacy in Washington winemaking. Legacy opens with aromas of dark ripe boysenberry, layered with toasted oak and baking spice. The blend boasts over 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, offering structure, firm tannins and elegance. Malbec and Cabernet Franc lend a deep purple hue along with aromas of blueberry and dried herbs. We increased the amount of Petit Verdot in our 2015 to offer intense fruit character. Legacy Red Blend is a true classic, and as such will pair well with dishes like prime rib and beef Wellington. Viticulture Notes: Our Legacy Red Blend is sourced from premier sites within the Horse Heaven Hills AVA, with a good percentage coming from Alder Ridge Vineyards. Overall, Columbia Valley had the hottest temperatures on record in 2015 with the weather warming in the beginning of the growing season, leading to an early bud break.
