All photos this page: © Richard Duval Images The Yakima Valley AVA grows more than RATTLESNAKE Yakima Valley 47 wine grapes varieties. The success HILLS Appellation of this diversity can be attributed to the many different growing aspects within the AVA. The micro climates, heat variations, SNIPES and different soil types within the three Yakima MOUNTAIN RED MOUNTAIN Valley sub AVAs — Rattlesnake Hills, Snipes Mountain & Red Mountain — play a major role in successfully growing so many grape varieties. RATTLESNAKE HILLS AVA Rattlesnake Hills, located around the town of Zillah, is named after the Northern Pacific Rattlesnake that inhabits the area. Rattlesnake Hills is almost evenly split between red and white wine grapes, with reds having a slight edge. Riesling is a dominant white grape in this region producing wines with aromas and flavors of lime, lemon, and green apple. Other sites in the appellation offer flavors with a little more stone fruit, particularly peach. SNIPES MOUNTAIN AVA Snipes Mountain gets its name from Ben Snipes, a cattle rancher who built a house there in the 1850s. It's the second smallest appellation in Washington with just 820 of the 5,145 acres planted in over 30 vinifera varieties. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon the most planted. Fruit from this AVA offer unique aromas and flavors which have made it desirable for winemakers to identify it as a Snipes Mountain-designated wine. RED MOUNTAIN AVA The Red Mountain AVA is located on the far eastern side of the Yakima Valley. It is the smallest appellation in Washington state with just 2,227 of the 4,040 vineyard acres planted. Cheatgrass, a plant that grows naturally in the region, turns bright red in early spring giving Red Mountain its name. The nearby Yakima River moderates temperatures and provides continual airflow, guarding against frost. SPRING BARREL TASTING April 26–28, 2019 The most popular annual event for Yakima Valley vintners and those who appreciate the fine wines coming from the Valley. Sample unfinished wine right from the barrel and gain insight into the artistic process at each winery. April 27–28, 2019 Yakima Valley’s newest event is the perfect opportunity to enjoy Spring Barrel Tasting festivities without the crowds. Participating winemakers will open their tasting rooms exclusively to Winemaker’s Table guests, offering exclusive tastings of library wines, current vintages and barrel samples. Learn the history, nuances and stories of each wine in an intimate seated tasting. In addition to these smaller tasting experiences, your Winemaker’s Table ticket will be honored as a Premier Pass to all participating wineries for the duration of the event weekend. The primary vintages were sourced wines from the Columbia Valley AVA. Hedges Cellars, as it was called, created the first commerical wine blend for sale from WA State. After three years, Tom (born in Richland, WA) and Anne-Marie Hedges (born in Champagne, France), moved from a sourced fruit model to an Estate Grown model, by purchasing land in WA States’ most coveted terroir: The Red Mountain AVA. Soon after, Hedges Cellars became Hedges Family Estate, when their son Christophe joined in 2001. Shortly after, their daughter Sarah joined in 2006 and became head winemaker in 2015.     BONAIR WINERY Gail and Shirley Puryear “Experience the Dream” BW-WA-121 Phone 509.829.6027 Fax 509.829.6510 OWNERS: Gail and Shirley fell in love with wine (and each other) as college exchange students in the wine country of Chile in 1967. After graduating from Washington State University, they moved to Southern California. It didn’t take them long to discover the wine country of California. Careers and children intervened for the next nine years, but in his spare time Gail read wine books, made wine, and taught wine appreciation courses. In 1979 the family moved back to their native Yakima Valley and purchased the five acres that is now the location of the original estate vineyards, the hospitality center, and the winery. They planted the chardonnay and cabernet vineyard and sold the grapes to Quail Run Winery. Not satisfied with just growing the grapes, they decided to jump into the fledging Washington Wine industry and bonded the winery in 1985. Their family and friends felt sorry for them because they thought that no one would find a winery at the end of a dusty country road. Shirley quit her teaching job in 1987 to work the vineyards and tasting room. Gail quit his job as elementary school principal in 1992 to devote his winemaking skills full time to the winery. Bonair Winery now encompasses 35 acres of prime vineyards in the heart of the Rattlesnake Hills AVA. A state of the art winemaking facility and a beautiful new hospitality center with spacious picnic areas are open year round.

    VINEYARDS 2016 ESTATE RED MOUNTAIN SYRAH RED MOUNTAIN ORIGINALS In 1975 our family planted the first vineyard on Red Mountain, an area now known for producing some of the world’s most powerful, opulent wines of distinction. For three generations we’ve worked side by side, hand in hand to craft exciting, vineyard-driven wines that capture the essence of Red Mountain. VINEYARD PROFILE Legendary Washington vineyard guru Dick Boushey famously proclaimed that “syrah loves a view,” and that’s exactly what Sunset Bench vineyard oers. It’s located higher on the hill than many of our other plantings, resulting in superb air/water drainage, dramatic diurnal temperature swings, and ample heat accumulation. WINE PROFILE Syrah from Red Mountain is prized for producing wines of profound concentration, color, and character. Elevage in a gentle french oak program ensures gorgeous fruit and ample minerality are preserved in bottle. Expect deep color and a lengthy finish; this is a remarkable wine. Mourvèdre in the blend adds aromatics, savories, and com- plexity. VINTAGE NOTES STATISTICS The 2016 vintage started early, with VINEYARD SOURCES // temperatures in the triple digits in May.     2016 CHARLES & CHARLES RIESLING ART DEN HOED VINEYARD • YAKIMA VALLEY • WASHINGTON STATE THE VINTAGE The 2016 vintage’s slightly different profile is due to the cool September and October months, which allowed an even gentler ripening. Also, the fact that it’s our third year working with this vineyard and we believe that we are directing the farming a little better, particularly from an irrigation point of view. THE WINE The result is a wine that has a unique richness for Riesling as the high tones are even a bit higher. There's a touch more of the high tone key lime Mosel component that shines through to make for a more dynamic and complex profile. The aromatics have a distinct citrus zest, key lime, apricot, peach and summer flowers. Thankfully, none of the aromas or flavors dominate, allowing an underlying salinity and mineral component to shine through. The wine is beautifully balanced from a kiss of sugar and bright acidity. pH – 3.05 RS – .12g/L Alc – 12% 15,000 cases produced THE TERROIR This Riesling is 100% from grapes grown on the Art Den Hoed vineyard, right on the outside edge of the Rattlesnake Hills AVA, in the Yakima Valley.
