MINCHINHAMPTON OLD COURSE GOLF CLUB, 4 MINCHINHAMPTON COMMON DID YOU KNOW?

The legend of Tom Long’s Post (where five roads meet on Minchinhampton Common) has intrigued residents and travellers alike for well over a century.

How did the ‘post’ get its name? Some say Tom Long was an early highwayman, who had an affair with the daughter of the landlord of the Amberley Inn, and that the post marks either the spot where he used to hold up coaches or the spot where he was hanged.

However others are more sceptical as there is no record of a highwayman called Tom Long and local executions were carried out in . But another possibility is suicide. Support for this comes from an account of a lecture, by Charles Playne in 1874, when he said “at the beginning of the 19th century, Tom Long hung himself in a cottage near Rodborough Manor House and was buried at the cross-roads”.
