The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant that resulted from the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, involved the dispersion and spread of radioactive materials, and thus from both the political and economic perspectives, the accident became not only an issue for Japan itself but also an issue requiring international crisis management. Because nuclear plants can become the target of nuclear terrorism, problems related to such facilities are directly connected to security issues. However, the policymaking of the Japanese government and Japan-US coordination in response to the Fukushima crisis was not implemented smoothly. This research project was premised upon the belief that it is extremely important for the future of the Japan-US relationship to draw lessons from the recent crisis and use that to deepen bilateral cooperation. The objective of this project was thus to review and analyze the lessons that can be drawn from US and Japanese responses to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and on the basis of these assessments, to contribute to enhancing the Japan-US alliance’s nuclear crisis management capabilities, including its ability to respond to nuclear terrorism.

In the January-March 2020 period, TDK Corp. (Sec. Code: 6762, Issuer Rating: A+) and Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. (Sec. Code: 6976, Issuer Rating: A) posted net losses due primarily to impairment losses on assets associated with automotive businesses, combined with a seasonal decline in smartphone-related demand. Alps Alpine Co., Ltd. (Sec. Code: 6770, Issuer Rating: A-), which derives around 70% of consolidated sales from automotive products and components, including car navigation systems, fell into an operating loss. As growth in unit sales of smartphones and other digital devices became difficult to envisage, many electronic components companies have been actively investing in expanding automotive businesses as the core of their growth strategies. If automobile production and sales continue to be stagnant for a protracted period of time due, for example, to the slow containment of the coronavirus or the emergence of a serious second wave, the earnings impact will be amplified. Should development plans for next-generation vehicles be disturbed, the risk of impairment of related facilities and goodwill will also warrant attention. Ao / GMSARN International Journal 7 (2013) 145 -150 New Direction towards Sustainable Society in Japan after the Nuclear Crisis Yuka Hayakawa, Hidefumi Imura, and Masazumi Ao Abstract — Nowadays, many cities in Japan are undertaking initiatives aiming to create cities with high environmental performance. Climate change countermeasures are considered as a top priority on the national environmental policy agenda, and the formation of low-carbon cities is a primary theme for environmental urban planning. However, the Great East Japan Earthquake, which caused the triple disasters of an earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident on 11 March, 2011, cast a large shadow on the initiatives aiming to create low-carbon cities. This paper makes a brief survey on the changing public awareness and attitude regarding nuclear safety and future energy sources in Japan, and discusses new direction of sustainable societies.
