LIGHTNESS, AMID INNOVATIONS AND TRENDS

Taking place during Milan’s Design Week, the 2017 edition of space&interiors shines the spotlight on how materials and finishes play such a crucial role in defining the quality of the environments we live in. A group of hand-picked manufacturers will demonstrate the way very different formal or structural innovations can give rise to fascinating outcomes that underscore the rediscovered significance of lightness.

The Carrara Fiere trade fair organisers are bringing eight sculptures by leading architects including Kengo Kuma and Fabio Novembre to the “La luce del marmo” space. The art works are superb examples of how light can bring out the magnificence of marble. By disclosing the hidden beauty of its structure, marble offers designers untold potential for creating incomparable transparencies and effects. ABSOLUTE LIGHTNESS THE CONCEPT

Curated by Migliore+Servetto Architects, the exhibit showcases architectural finishes presented by exhibitors in an entirely novel and interactive setting. “Absolute Lightness” looks at how exhibitors apply the concept of lightness to their products.

Lightness has always been one of the mainstays of architecture: lightness drives sustainability, shapes interactions with other materials, and determines the overarching relationship with light itself.

The exhibition stretches literally and figuratively over three narrative levels: one jutting into the wide central promenade, where long white table invite visitors to explore contents and products also using an interactive App designed especially for this journey of discovery.

On an intermediate level, behind huge reflecting surfaces that expand space into new dimensions, appears a visually striking tale of lightness through quotes, targeted product images and illustrations.

On the upper level, a complex system of dynamic projections and lighting hover over the tables. Emphasising the significance of transitions, the aisles between the tables are highlighted by huge circular projection planes hanging from the ceiling and thin lines of light.

The projections explore the concept of lightness from different perspectives: lightness in light, nature, Utopian and in relation to other elements, imbuing the journey of discovery into materials and products with insights and implications. Architecture’s multifarious treatment of materials: a tale of context and the international language stretching from the Old Continent to the Orient.

The founders of Studio 5+1AA confront the contemporary in the way they address the relationship between territory, city and architecture, constructing this relationship as a representation of reality. The perception and the transformation of reality are, therefore, the keys to a conception of architecture as both body and idea, at once real and emotional, pragmatic and sensual, acceptable and yet also capable of engendering wonder as a catalyst of new understanding.
