The project extends over three neighborhoods (Garibaldi, Varesine and Isola) and involves a large brownfield area which had been deteriorating for over 50 years. The landscape design focused on the creation of a large park and extended to the design of both hardscape and softscape for the inner courts and the main pathways. The redevelopment of Porta Nuova is considered as the natural expansion of the existing neighborhoods and aims to interrelate the history and identity of each of them. This goal is achieved through the upgrading of the public realm by the implementation of high quality public spaces, new squares, pedestrian paths and public gardens. In this way the area is no longer solely a connection among the three zones, but it also becomes a destination in its own and a meeting place where the Milanese can come and socialize. Essen European Green Capital Open Space Creates Urban Space European Green Capital Award 2017 Essen Green Capital ESSEN 2017 © Johannes Kassenberg 2017 > 2027 Welcome to the Green Decade The project proposes strategic guidelines for the development of Essen, capital of culture 2017. A model for the valorisation of residential, commercial and service areas is identified as a key-theme for the regeneration and recovery of the Emscher River, aiming at a sustainable development of the whole territory. “Freiraum schafft Stadtraum” (open space creates urban space) is our concept to connect and develop green infrastructures for more urban quality. Part of the project is the Krupp Park where a recovered site creates an attractive public green space with playgrounds, rest areas and new viewpoints. In the design, a wide ‘high-valley’ runs North-South through the park, accompanied by five shifted flat hills, realized by reusing the soil movements of the building phases for the new ThyssenKrupp headquarter. Dubai EXPO 2020 DUBAI Thematic Districts, Public Realm Design with Hopkins Architects Partnership LLP © EXPO 2020 DUBAI Opportunity, Mobility, Sustainability Connecting Minds, Creating the Future The Thematic Districts are an integral part of the EXPO 2020 DUBAI site that comprise 86 permanent buildings spread over three separate ‘petals’. Each of the three petals is given a unique and memorable character, portrayed through different geometry, landscaping and colours to reflect the three main EXPO 2020 DUBAI themes: Mobility, Opportunity and Sustainability. The design is characterized by a series of tree-lined, self-shaded, human scaled streets, with a variety of different sized and themed courtyard spaces. A central spine runs through each District creating special places with water features, event stages, activity areas and exciting rest places, clustered underneath a series of elegant shade structures. The project has been designed to achieve LEED Gold and will be repurposed in legacy mode to create a campus of buildings, each inter-connected via bridge links that overlook landscaped spaces, offering a district for innovative startups and tech companies. The company expands its spaces in a new headquarter with a contemporary design, called “the cubic”: this concept aims to improve the quality of work spaces as well as meeting rooms and foyers for customers. The landscape design involves all building open spaces, from the entrance in the basement to the roof-top terrace. A particular attention was reserved to the inner patios at the third level: they generate intimate spaces in relation to the industrial context of the sorroundings. All design and technological solutions follow the principles of biophilic design and fulfill LEED certification requirements. The terrace is the heart of the project. Visitors are surrounded by a flowery crown that frames the view and enriches the recreational space for events. They provide a strong dialogue between the landscape and the river and through the open spaces and the urban layout. The development is divided into zones with different characteristics according to the adaptation to local topography. The extended flood area between the water and the curvy riverside path creates natural room for the river Moskva to flow smoothly into a wider riverbed of high ecological value.
