It says “record” and the numbers are going up. This is myself and Nick Lethert making a second effort at our interview. It’s the first of December, isn’t it? NL: It is. DS: And we’re at the Celtic Junction. I suppose we’ll start at the same place as we started the last time, which was, I just think chronologically, and I think of, what is your background, what is the background of your father, your family, and origins, and your mother. NL: I grew up just down the street from the Celtic Junction in Saint Mark’s parish to a household where the first twelve or so years I lived with my father, who was of German Catholic heritage and my mother, who was Irish Catholic. Both of my mother’s parents came from Connemara. They met in Saint Paul, and I lived with my grandmother, who was from a little village, a tiny little village called Derroe, which is in Connemara over in the area by Carraroe, Costello, sort of bogland around there. My grandmother was a very intense person, not the least of which because her husband, who grew up in Maam Cross, a little further up in the mountains in Connemara, left her and the family when they had three young children, so it made for sort of a Dickens-like life for her and for her three kids, one of which was my mother. -

Chicken and Mushroom Boxty Yield: 4 servings For the Filling: 1/3 cup all-purpose flour for coating 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1 lb skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, cubed (about 3 breasts) 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 yellow onion, chopped 4 ounces sliced mushrooms 1 cup Marsala wine 1/4 cup heavy cream more flour, as needed Mix together the flour, salt, pepper and oregano in a shallow bowl. Drop in the chicken pieces and evenly coat with the flour mixture. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the chicken and onions until chicken is almost fully cooked. Stir in the mushrooms and cook for another minute. Add the Marsala, then cover the skillet and simmer on medium-low heat for 10 minutes; stir occasionally. Pour in the cream and bring to a boil. Cook until the liquid is reduced to desired thickness. If the sauce is not thick enough, add a little flour as needed. For the Boxty: Recipe Note: It is important to not make the potato cake batter too far in advance before cooking them, as it will turn brown or black. 1 9-ounce russet potato, peeled, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 1/2 cups grated peeled russet potato (about two 9-ounce potatoes), squeezed dry in kitchen towel 3/4 cup all purpose flour 1 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup (approximately) buttermilk Preheat oven to 300°F. Boil the 1-inch pieces of potato in a saucepan until fork tender, about 15 minutes. -

How can the liminal spaces between graduate school (theory) and art teaching (practice) be more productive? How can an art teacher thrive as a hybrid of teacher/learner? I identify instances of dialogic co- constructed knowledge but monologic or dialectic experiences have been more prevalent. By interpreting and analyzing my art educations a theory is developed to optimize educational interaction to enhance learning experiences of teachers, and consequently learning experiences of their students. ii Acknowledgments Many educators have taught and inspired me through the four degrees I have earned from The Ohio State University. The university educators make up one half of the equation that is my art education. The other half is my colleagues from public education. Some of these people guided and/or taught alongside me for decades. Together these two communities have greatly influenced the experiences upon which this dissertation is based, and I thank them for working with me. -

August 1 Irish Music & 2012 Dance Association Lúnasa 30th Year, Issue No. 8 The mission of the Irish Music and Dance Association is to support, coordinate, encourage and promote high quality activities and programs in Irish music, dance, and other cultural traditions within the community and to insure the continuation of those traditions. New Offerings at Irish Fair Inside this issue: Irish Fair has several new things to check out this year: Tune of the Month 2 The overall layout of the festival grounds will be changing in 2012. The new Gaelic Corner 3 Céilíúradh Céim (Celebration Stage) replaces the River Stage and will be located IMDA Grant Winner 7 on the west end of the grounds. The Cultural Area will be moving to a new site along the river, with a new layout for the Triscéil Tea Room and some new exhibits August Calendar 10-11 will provide visitors with background on the contributions of the Irish to Minnesota. Northwoods Songs 16 And the Crossroad Dance Hall and Children’s Area will be also be located along Ceili Corner 18 the river. Smidirini 19 The Atlantic Steps , an international-touring adaptation of the phenomenally successful Irish show Fuaim Chonamara, will be presented on Saturday evening. It tells the epic story of Ireland’s oldest dance form, portrayed through the music, song, dance and energy of the Connemara region. Centered around the joyful dance and unbridled enthusiasm of Brian Cunningham, the show continues to move festival and theatre audiences to their feet, bringing sean-nós dance to its rightful place on the world stage. -

Etnomusikologian vuosikirja, 30, 66-91. https://doi.org/10.23985/evk.69076 Noora Karjalainen IMAGINED, REMEMBERED, GENDERED: Narratives of cosy other in the media representations of female folk singers This article examines the ways in which contemporary folk singers Julie Fowlis (Scotland), Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (Ireland), Emily Portman and Kate Rusby (England) are constructed in the media as what I call the ‘cosy other’. Discussed here in relation to these Western European artists, I argue that my concept of cosy otherness derives from the internal other that is both European and foreign (Bohlman 2000: 189–193; Gelbart 2007: 64; McKerrell 2016: 126; O’Flynn 2014: 238). Unlike the conventional definition of a post-colonial other and the concept of an internal other, the cosy other is not ominous, competing, or negative. Rather, it appears charming and unthreateningly different with singular cultural traits such as a performance language other than English, a discernible regional dialect, or a pronounced regionalism. The cultural baggage accumulated over time – for example the troubled history of both Ireland and Scotland with England – is wrapped up in cosiness, niceness and nostalgia. -

Troubled Voices A Troubles Archive Essay Martin Dowling Cover Image: Joseph McWilliams - Twelfth March (1991) From the collection of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland About the Author Martin Dowling is a historian, sociologist, and fiddle player, and lecturer in Irish Traditional Music in the School of Music and Sonic Arts in Queen’s University of Belfast. Martin has performed internationally with his wife, flute player and singer Christine Dowling. He teaches fiddle regularly at Scoil Samhradh Willy Clancy and the South Sligo Summer School, as well as at festivals and workshops in Europe and America. From 1998 until 2004 he was Traditional Arts Officer at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. He is the author of Tenant Right and Agrarian Society in Ulster, 1600-1870 (Irish Academic Press, 1999), and has held postdoctoral fellowships in Queen’s University of Belfast and University College Dublin. Recent publications include “Fiddling for Outcomes: Traditional Music, Social Capital, and Arts Policy in Northern Ireland,” International Journal of Cultural Policy, vol. 14, no 2 (May, 2008); “’Thought-Tormented Music’: Joyce and the Music of the Irish Revival,” James Joyce Quarterly, vol. 44, no. 1 (2008); and “Rambling in the Field of Modern Identity: Some Speculations on Irish Traditional Music,” Radharc: a Journal of Irish and Irish-American Studies, vols. 5-7 (2004-2006), pp. 109-136. He is currently working on a monograph history of Irish traditional music from the death of harpist-composer Turlough Carolan (1738) to the first performance of Riverdance (1994).
