Strabon ayrıca tarih alanında da büyülc çalışmalar yapmış ve 47 cil·tlik bir tarih yazmıştır. Ancak bu eseri günümüze kadar ulaşa~amıştır. Strabon Coğrafya eserinde Eskiçağdwci Anadolu'nun sadece coğrafyası halekında değil tarihi haldtında da b~lgiler vermektedir. Eserinin çeşitli yerlerinde kendisinden ve atalarından bahsetmek­ tedir: Strabon hakkındaki bildiklerimizde eserinde bize naklettiği bilgi­ lerden ibaret·tir. A-taları Pontos kralları yanında önemli görevler almış olan kimselerdir. özellikle anne tarafından soylu bir aileye mensup olan Strabon m.ö. 64-63 yıllarında Pontos bölgesinde Aınaseia (Amasya) şehrinde doğmuştur. Varlıklı bir aileye mensup olduğu için iyi bir ÖbTenim yapabil­ miş ve istediği kadar seyahat edebilmiştir. Öğrenimini genç yaşta Karia'da (Tralles) yanında Nysa şehrinde Aristodemos'un yru1ında yapmıştır. H.ö. 44 yıllarında Roma'ya gitmiş ve orada da öğrenimine devam etmiştir. Onun hocaları arasında Stoic filozof tarihçi, büyük bilgin Poseidonios da vardır. Strabon'un kendisi de Stoic felsefenin ilkelerine bağlı bir filazoftur. Eserlerinde Roma Siyasetine ve siyasetçilerine bir hayranlılc gÇ;izlenılenmelctedir. Afrilca'nın ve Anadolu­ nun büyük bir kısmını dolaşan s·trabon hayatının son 26-27 yılını Amasia 1da geçirmiş tir.

Corey Brennan and approved by ____________________________ ____________________________ ____________________________ ____________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey October, 2007 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Pontifical Law of the Roman Republic by MICHAEL JOSEPH JOHNSON Dissertation Director: T. Corey Brennan This dissertation investigates the guiding principle of arguably the most important religious authority in ancient Rome, the pontifical college. Chapter One introduces the subject and discusses the hypothesis the dissertation will advance. Chapter Two examines the place of the college within Roman law and religion, giving particular attention to disproving several widely held notions about the relationship of the pontifical law to the civil and sacral law. Chapter Three offers the first detailed examination of the duties of the pontifical college as a collective body. I spend the bulk of the chapter analyzing two of the three collegiate duties I identify: the issuing of documents known as decrees and responses and the supervision of the Vestal Virgins. I analyze all decrees and responses from the point of view their content, treating first those that concern dedications, then those on the calendar, and finally those on vows. In doing so my goal is to understand the reasoning behind the decree and the major theological doctrines underpinning it. In documenting the pontifical supervision of Vestal Virgins I focus on the college's actions towards a Vestal accused of losing her chastity.

ARNAUD 171 BEIRUT: COMMERCE AND TRADE (200 BC - AD 400) PASCAL ARNAUD We know little of Beirut's commerce and trade, and shall probably continue to know little about this matter, despite a lecture given by Mrs Nada Kellas in 19961. In fact, the history of Commerce and Trade relies mainly on both ar- chaeological and epigraphical evidence. As far as archaeological evidence is concerned, one must remember that only artefacts strongly linked with ceram- ics, i.e. vases themselves and any items, carried in amphoras, (predominantly, but not solely, liquids, can give information about the geographical origin, date and nature of such products. The huge quantities of materials brought to the light by recent excavations in Beirut should, one day, provide us with new evi- dence about importations of such products in Beirut, but we will await the complete study of this material, which, until today by no means provided glo- bal statistics valid at the whole town scale. The evidence already published still allows nothing more than mere subjective impressions about the origins of the material. I shall try nevertheless to rely on such impressions about that ma- terial, given that we lack statistics, and that it is impossible to infer from any isolated sherd the existence of permanent trade-routes and commercial flows. The results of such an inquiry would be, at present, worth little if not con- fronted with other evidence. On the other hand, it should be of great interest to identify specific Berytan productions among the finds from other sites in order to map the diffusion area of items produced in Beirut and the surrounding territory.

DISCOVERY AT THE l\IOSQUE EL AKS.A, JERUSALEM.-llo A DISCOVERY of considerable interest has been made in this :Mosque by the Rev. J. Neil, who has only recently gone to Jerusalem for the Society for the Conversion of the Jews. "In the Mosque of El Aksa," he writes, "you will remember that there is a long plain room opening out at the south-east angle, called the Mosque of Omar, in which the only object of interest whatever is a recess supported by two twisted pillars, and called the Mihrab, or Praying-place of Omar. You may, perhaps, remember that the pillars on each side of this recess, of Solomonic twisted pattern and polished marble, appear to have been turned upside down, and to have their capitals of greyish stone in broken leaf-like patterns below. On vi~iting this the day before yesterday, July 5th, I discovered that a great part of the yellowish plaster had been removed from the top of these pillars, and that rich grotesquely carved capitals were exposed to view in an admirable state of preserva­ tion.
