Essentially The Whispers of Nemesis sunny escapism, the perfect holiday read' - Daily Telegraph 'Riveting' - Wall Street Journal 'This powerfully atmospheric mystery embraces Mediterranean passion, mythic meddling and patriarchal persecution. Anne Zouroudi proves a natural at the dark arts of writing Euro-crime' - Independent 'Not only charming and engrossing stories, but also shrewd and often bleak portraits of individual weakness and social fragility. But this is a mystery novel, and Zouroudi creates suspense as elegantly as she does atmosphere' - Washington Post 'I can't get enough of Anne Zouroudi's dapper and enigmatic Greek detective Hermes Diaktoros' - The Australian 'Diaktoros is a delight. Half Poirot, half deus ex machina, but far more earth-bound than his first name suggests, the portly detective has an otherworldly, Marlowesque incorruptibility. Another enthralling mystery in Zouroudi's Seven Deadly sins Hermes Diaktoros mystery series; having read it, I think the sin is of pride. In this rural Greek village where the The Whispers of Nemesis is set, it is customary after several years to exhume a dead body and rebury the bones. According The Whispers of Nemesis the poet's will, none of his family can receive any inheritance until the exhumation and reburial. Hermes is called in to investigate the situation. A subsequent dead body is found near a chapel of St. Fanourios [Greek Orthodox saint of lost things]; I see why Zouroudi used that particular name. With the poet's ID card found on the body, it is identified as his. It is assumed he's hidden himself away for several years for whatever reason and the family will have to wait all over again for their inheritance. From various clues, Hermes suspects murder and after tracking down the killer, dispenses his one-of-a-kind justice. There were unusual such twists and turns that I couldn't guess the solution, although finishing the novel, I saw how everything fit together. The author's love for Greece and its people and landscape shines through every page. In this whole series, I like how Hermes goes about solving each mystery and meting out justice. Very highly recommended. View 1 comment. Apr 14, Drayton Bird rated it it was amazing. The Whispers of Nemesis is the third book I have read by this lady. I have enjoyed them all immensely. I think she is an extremely good writer, not just of crime stories, but by any measure. It falls into a category we all recognise: the one where you stumble across a writer and character and feel you have found friends you can't wait to meet again. If you like figures like Camilleri's Montalbano, I think you will love this. Not because the hero is anything like the good Comissario - he could hardly be more unlike i This is the third book I have read by this lady. Not because the hero is anything like the good Comissario - he could hardly be more unlike in many ways - but because the writing and plotting is just as good, and some of the detail is not dissimilar. The setting, Greece - but not the crowds of ; more the out of the way villages and little towns where old traditions still. Lots of details of food, as with Camilleri, but very often food that isn't very well cooked. Many interesting characters but no sexy women so far - more the disappointed in love, the black-clad widows, those whose life has given them little to cheer about. It is funny, touching, intriguing - and you really get a sense of the real Greece. I really give it The Whispers of Nemesis marks. Can't wait The Whispers of Nemesis find another! Mar 16, Michelle Kemp rated it The Whispers of Nemesis was amazing. Hermes is definitely not an ordinary man. Jan 26, Susan rated it really liked it Shelves: mystery-europe. This is an absorbing series, but it's sometimes hard to write a brief synopsis about it. A well-dressed, overweight The Whispers of Nemesis introduces himself to a Greek village as Hermes Diaktoros of Athens, an investigator for a mysterious, powerful group. He talks to a number of people--in the northern village of Vrisi, he visits an old woman he knew long ago. Some mysterious things happen; some mysterious things are untangled; people who are kind may reap a small reward; people who are cruel will generally pay This is an absorbing series, but it's sometimes hard to write a brief synopsis about it. Some mysterious things happen; some mysterious things are untangled; people who are kind may reap a small reward; people who are cruel will generally pay for it. It's clear to the reader that Hermes really is the god in modern guise, but who, in the story, would imagine that this is the case? Mar 13, Terri rated it it was ok Shelves: mystery. I've been following this series, but was disappointed in this book. It is so slow compared to the others. There has been an easy-going aspect to all the others, and I can't say that The Whispers of Nemesis of them are fast-moving. But this one I did persevere, and when everything is ended, The Whispers of Nemesis questions are answered and justice is served, Hermes style, but oh, the journey it too I've been following this series, but was disappointed in this book. The Whispers of Nemesis did persevere, and The Whispers of Nemesis everything is ended, the questions are answered and justice is served, Hermes style, but oh, the journey it took to get to the end. Sep 26, Kin rated it did not like it Shelves: mysterybritish. Do all the other books in the series suck as much as this one, or has the author become sloppy? Don't know; picked up this title by accident a murder mystery, the cover said NOPE and now I don't feel like reading the rest. No redeeming features whatsoever. May 12, David D. Knapp, Ph. This series features the mercurial wink, wink! Without giving too much away, I will tell you that he's not your typical detective. It is especially intriguing that The Whispers of Nemesis always responds to some As part of keeping my spirits up during the COVID pandemic, I've decided to reread two series of novels set in Greece. It is especially intriguing that he always responds to someone asking him who he's working for by replying: "I work for a higher The Whispers of Nemesis. Seriously, I've loved the Zouroudi series since I first discovered it years ago when I picked up this novel while traveling. Because she's lived on the Greek islands, she is able to paint life there in an authentic way - warts and all.
