PROGRAM RATIONALE a. A Statement of how the Proposed MFA fits into the Research and Teaching Mission of the Dance Program The Duke University Program in Dance proposes a graduate program leading to a terminal degree, Master of Fine Arts in Dance: Embodied Interdisciplinary Praxis. The establishment of the MFA in Dance at Duke forms a strategic key element in order to consolidate and expand the current Dance Program’s mission to endorse dance as a socially transformative force. Duke’s MFA in Dance will distinguish itself through its emphasis on the following key elements creating a unique and stimulating research-environment, carefully designed to augment and develop current activities of the Dance Program and Duke at large. • the program is open to all forms of dance and human movement, artistic, aesthetic, social and therapeutic • students’ applications will include a formulated research project, further mentored to take advantage of the extensive cross and interdisciplinary study opportunities at Duke in order to create individually-tailored research programs • the program will promote the formulation and integration of knowledge gained through continued embodied practice • the program will provide exclusive and well guided access to and collaboration with the American Dance Festival • it will engage the students in the fields of dance, movement and choreography at the vanguard of contemporary research and praxis • research will be encouraged to foreground contributions to the socio-political processes through artistic practice • the program will promote various peer-to-peer learning opportunities, encouraging ongoing, informal as well as formal artistic and scholarly exchanges between students, community artists and faculty alike. Aligned with the mission of Duke University to emphasize liberal arts and professional programs, the mission of the Dance Program is to prepare liberally-educated and socially responsible dance artists, educators and scholars, who are well-grounded in the performance practice, creative works, theories and the social and cultural contexts of dance. The Dance Program provides a comprehensive liberal arts-based program and fosters a rich environment in which both faculty and students are encouraged to

    Welcome Letter 2013 Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award Lin Hwai-min The ADF wishes to thank the late Samuel H. Scripps, whose generosity made possible the annual $50,000 Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award. The Award was established in 1981 as the first of its kind and honors chorographers who have dedicated their lives and talent to the creation of modern dance. The continuation of the award is made possible through the SHS Foundation and its President, Richard E. Feldman. Celebrated choreographer, director, and educator Lin Hwai-min will be presented with the 2013 Award by Joseph V. Melillo in a special ceremony on Saturday, July 27th at 8:00 pm, prior to the Forces of Dance performance at the Durham Performing Arts Center. The program will also include a performance of the solo from Lin Hwai-min’s 1998 work Moon Water, performed by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre dancer Chou Chang-ning. Mr. Lin’s fearless zeal for the art form has established him as one of the most dynamic and innovative choreographers today. His illustrious career as a choreographer has spanned over four decades and has earned him international praise for his impact on Chinese modern dance. He is the founder, choreographer, and artistic director of both Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan (founded in 1973) and Cloud Gate 2 (founded in 1992), and his choreography continues to be presented throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. While his works often draw inspiration from traditional elements of Asian culture and aesthetics, his choreographic brilliance continues to push boundaries and redefine the art form.

Johnson and Allegra Fuller Snyder July 1999 Council on Library and Information Resources Washington, D.C. ii About the Contributors Catherine Johnson served as director for the Dance Heritage Coalition’s Access to Resources for the History of Dance in Seven Repositories Project. She holds an M.S. in library science from Columbia University with a specialization in rare books and manuscripts and a B.A. from Bethany College with a major in English literature and theater. Ms. Johnson served as the founding director of the Dance Heritage Coalition from 1992 to 1997. Before that, she was assistant curator at the Harvard Theatre Collection, where she was responsible for access, processing, and exhibitions, among other duties. She has held positions at The New York Public Library and the Folger Shakespeare Library. Allegra Fuller Snyder, the American Dance Guild’s 1992 Honoree of the Year, is professor emeritus of dance and former director of the Graduate Program in Dance Ethnology at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has also served as chair of the faculty, School of the Arts, and chair of the Department of Dance at UCLA. She was visiting professor of performance studies at New York University and honorary visiting professor at the University of Surrey, Guildford, England. She has written extensively and directed several films about dance and has received grants from NEA and NEH in addition to numerous honors. Since 1993, she has served as executive director, president, and chairwoman of the board of directors of the Buckminster Fuller Institute.

It analyses the responses and perceptions of an audience to the changing transformations of the media and the staging of the dance performance. Alongside these responses, I compare and contrast some of the philosophical and aesthetic debates from the past three decades regarding dance and technology in performance, including that of the tension between the acceptance or rejection of «unnatural» remediated bodies and «natural» live bodies moving in the stage space. RESUMEN: Este artículo aborda el proyecto de danza Interface 2, que agrupaba bailarines en directo, proyecciones animadas por ordenador (creaciones transducidas de la sección en vivo) y la interfaz de bailarines en vivo con bailarines filmados. Se analizan la respuesta y percepciones del público hacia las transformaciones continuas de los medios tecnológicos de la puesta en escena de la danza. Igualmente, se comparan y contrastan algunos de los debates filosóficos y estéticos de las últimas tres décadas en relación con la danza y el uso de la tecnología en la representación, en particular el referente a la tensión entre la aceptación o rechazo de la falta de «naturalidad» de los cuerpos transducidos y la «naturalidad» de los cuerpos en vivo moviéndose por el espacio escénico.
