IAA www.ValkyrieAstrology.com Introduction to the Asteroids Report Asteroids orbit around the Sun just as planets do, but they are generally smaller than planets, and some of their physical characteristics and orbital characteristics are different from those of planets. Some objects are classified as being dwarf planets, and these objects are more similar to planets than most asteroids but do not fully have the characteristics that are typical of a planet. Pluto was once regarded officially as a planet but has been reclassified as a dward planet, and the asteroid Ceres is now widely regarded as a dwarf planet. Of the hundreds of thousands of asteroids that orbit around our Sun, over 1,000 of them have been given names that are related to myths, legends, literary or historical figures of interest, or places. Some astrologers believe that asteroids have a significance and relevance to human life just as the planets do, and that the astrological significance of the asteroid is often related in some way to the name of the asteroid. In this report 1,425 asteroids are analyzed to see if they are conjunct in zodiac longitude the Sun, Moon, or planets in the birth chart within a 1 degree orb. If the conjunction occurs, information about the asteroid is provided. Those astrologers who include hundreds of asteroids in their interpretations believe that the asteroids often related to very specific events in your life. The names of close family and friends and situations that you encounter in life often reflect the nature of the asteroids that are conjunct planets in your chart. -

Kuipers, University of California, Irvine Thomas Hubbard’s book is the second major book on literary pastoral in this decade; the other, Paul Alper’s What is Pastoral? (University of Chicago, 1996). Both start from the argument that pastoral, when considered over its long literary history, must be narrowed down, and should not be considered as something whose primary role is the setting of some idealized world. The “questions of genre definition and social function have their own interest,” says Hubbard, but “the present study . assumes pastoral as ‘convention’ rather than as ‘theme,’ as a tradition more than as a definable genre” (4-5). -

Heracles and the Golden Apples of the Hesperides According to Pseudo-Apollodorus (Bibliotheca, 2.5.11) Heracles completed his ten labors in eight years and one month. However, Eurystheus refused to recognize two: the slaying of the Lernaean Hydra (since Hercules' nephew and charioteer Iolaus had helped him) and the cleansing of the Augean stables (because Hercules accepted payment for the labor). Eurystheus ordered an eleventh labor which consisted of fetching the Golden Apples of the Hesperides. The apples were not located in Libya, “as some have said” but they were on Mount Atlas in the land of the Hyperboreans. Gaia had given them as a wedding gift to Zeus when he married Hera. They were guarded by a serpent with one hundred heads and by the Hesperides: Aegle, Erythia, Hesperia and Arethusa. Heracles traveled through Libya, Egypt, Asia, Arabia and Libya again. He then reached Mount Caucasus where he shot the eagle that was devouring the liver of Prometheus and freed him. Prometheus then told him to let Atlas fetch the apples while holding the heavens for the Titan so Heracles went to the land of the Hyperboreans and offered to hold up the heavens while Atlas got the apples. Upon his return Atlas had three apples. However, Atlas attempted to trick Heracles into carrying the sky permanently by offering to deliver the apples himself, as anyone who purposely took the burden must carry it forever or until someone else took it away. Heracles, suspecting Atlas did not intend to return, pretended to agree to Atlas' offer, asking only that Atlas take the sky again for a few moments so Heracles could put a pad on his head. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. 1 Electron: Greek Etymology and Baltic Mythology One of the several problems associated with the ancient Greek word electron is: to which of the following does it originally refer? The fossilized mineral amber or the alloy of gold and silver? Both uses of the word are found in our earliest Greek texts. Because the so-called Mycenaean Greeks, the first Greek-speaking inhabitants of the Greek mainland, were a metal producing culture and since amber was not indigenous to this area, one might assume that the Greek word electron first referred to the metal alloy, but this is by no means certain. How, for example, did this same word then come to be used for the substance amber? A second problem is the precise etymology of the word. The difficulty of the problem is reflected in the fact that in several of our earliest instances of its use in the Greek writers, Hesiod and Homer, either meaning could apply (Homer, Book 15.460, Book 18.206; Hesiod, 150.24, Shield of Heracles 142); further, that the eminent linguists/etymologists Pierre Chantraine and Julius Pokorny (Chantraine 323, 331) hesitate to make any definitive statements as to its origins. -
