Zu den Inschriften des Apollo Grannus. ' Von M. Ihm. Eine in Schweden auf getauchte Votivinschrift an den keltischen Apollo Gramms ist seit längerer Zeit bekannt, aber weder bei Grelli (nr. 1997) noch von Undset Bullettino d. Inst. 1883 p. 237 1), aus denen Holder Altkeltischer Sprachschatz 1 Sp. 2038 schöpft, richtig publiziert. For the Latin cognomen, Ferox: Kajanto 1965: 267 and Solin-Salomies 1994: 331. The dedicant had the tria nomina of a Roman citizen and at the same time, he said that he was a lingo citizen. Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on. -

A SMALL clay figurine found some years ago at Canterbury has for a long time provided an enigma in the identity of the personage which it represents.1 Although the head is missing it is otherwise complete and depicts a matron seated on a throne or high-backed chair, holding a small dog in her arms. The type is well known in north-east Gaul, where numerous examples have been found. These figurines were mass-produced in moulds, two of which have come to light at Bertrich near Trier,2 and it is from that region probably that the Canterbury example came, either as an object of trade or as a personal possession. That figurines of this type had some religious significance is clear from their frequent occurrence on the sites of temples, particularly at Trier3 and in the surrounding countryside.4 For instance, in the temple-area at Trier a number of these figurines were found together by a small shrine, before the door of which stood a stone statue of a seated matron who holds a basket of fruits upon her lap and has a dog seated at her side.5 The presence of the same type of figurine in Roman graves further suggests that it served some ritual purpose.6 Curiously enough in spite of all this abundant material the name of the goddess has in no case been revealed. It is this lacuna in our knowledge that has stimu- lated the writer to search for any evidence which might shed light on the matron's identity. -

The Greek Origin of Caduceum: Æsculapius

RILLO, DR EN H* SUMMARY Introduction: Medicine history gives us the chance to reflect about the Caduceus as the synthesis of the dialectic of the sensible and spiritual life. This opens and horizon of comprehension and allow us to recover the legend of Asclepius and it’s cult with the different symbolic elements that structure it. The legend: The historic and mythological references about Asclepius’ existence gives structure to the legend in a real and not-real environment perduring in the occidental medicine tradition as a mystical reference to the deity for the medical practice. The cult: It’s based in the incubation and synthesizes healing rites and therapeutical practices, as medical as surgical; exercise, sleep cures and amusement activities. The symbol: The linguistic origin of Asclepius’ name, the symbolism of the legend protagonists and the iconographic representation of their attributes, converge in the Caduceus to represent the medical practices and ideas synthesis, all them related to the human life. Conclusion: Asclepius’ perception transcends the Olympic divinity and situates him as the healing archetype; that’s why Caduceus is consistent with the system-world representation that rules the actual medical practice. After a careful analysis of the currently know sources the author states that in the ancient Thracian lands there was not only one or two (as most modern scholars assume) but several oracles of Dionysos. The author proves this point by giving a special attention to some details in the ancient information, such as the localization of the different oracles, the features of the mantic session, the officials etc. In conclusion is summed up that although the provided by the ancient writers’ more or less detailed information, oracles of Dionysos in Thrace are not yet localized. Key words: Ancient divination, Dionysos, oracles, Thrace. Dionysos, the famous ancient Greek god of vines and wine, was strongly connected with the Thracian lands.1 In the following lines is paid attention to only one aspect of this connection – the available information about his oracles by the Thracians. The essential sources on this issue are only a few passages in the ancient literature, presented below.2 They are repeatedly discussed by the modern scholars, which bring together all sources with only one or two oracles of that god in Thrace.3 However, here is suggested a new interpretation, based on a careful analysis of the ancient sources with a special attention over some important details neglected by the researchers, such as the localization of the different oracles, features of the mantic session, the officials etc. -
