Ringuelet”, Buenos Aires, Argentina 2CIMA, Departamento de Química, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas, Buenos Aires, Argentina This paper describes the external and buccopharyngeal morphology, chondrocranium and cranial muscles in tadpoles of Physalaemus fernandezae. The data are compared with those for other species of Physalaemus to improve the diagnosis of the “species group” within the genus. Species of the “P. biligonigerus” group have four infralabial papillae, two semicircular arches of pustulations in a V-shaped pattern on the prenarial arena, 6–8 conical papillae and 40–60 pustulations on the buccal roof arena, four postnarial papillae, a semicircular median ridge, claw- shaped lateral ridges and larval crista parotica with a poorly-developed anterior process. Species of the “P. pustulosus” group possess four infralabial papillae (shared with the P. biligonigerus group), tooth row formula 2(2)/3, four lingual papillae, two postnarial papillae, twelve conical papillae and 16–20 pustulations on the buccal roof arena, short lateral ridges with rough concave margins and larval crista parotica with a well-developed anterior process and reduced posterior process. Species of the “P. cuvieri ” group present two infralabial papillae, three pustulations and two serrated papillae on the prenarial arena, five pustulations and two serrated papillae on the postnarial arena, four long and bifid papillae and more than 60 pustulations on the buccal roof arena, and lack larval crista parotica. (Received April 12, 2012; Accept April 05, 2013) Abstract Amphibian declines have been reported worldwide and pesticides can negatively impact this taxonomic group. Brazil is the world’s largest consumer of pesticides, and Mato Grosso is the leader in pesticide consumption among Brazilian states. However, the effects of these chemicals on the biota are still poorly explored. The main goals of this study were to determine the acute toxicity (CL50) of the herbicide glyphosate on Physalaemus albonotatus, and to assess survivorship rates when tadpoles are kept under sub-lethal concentrations. Three egg masses of P. albonotatus were collected in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Tadpoles were exposed for 96 h to varying concentrations of glyphosate to determine the CL50 and survivorship. The -1 CL50 was 5.38 mg L and there were statistically significant differences in mortality rates and the number of days that P. albonotatus tadpoles survived when exposed in different sub-lethal concentrations of glyphosate. Different sensibilities among amphibian species may be related with their historical contact with pesticides and/or specific tolerances. -

Evidence indicates that the harmfulness of Bd infection depends on the species and life stage, the fungus strain, the season and environmental factors. In the present paper, we experimentally investigated (i) the susceptibility and sensitivity of five South American tadpole species (Rhinella fernandezae, Scinax squalirostris, Hypsiboas pulchellus, Leptodactylus latrans and Physalaemus fernandezae) to a foreign Bd strain (JEL423), (ii) the response of two populations of P. fernandezae to a native Bd strain (MLA1), and (Hi) the virulence of native and foreign Bd isolates on tadpoles of the same species. -

Spanning a one year period Department of Biological Sciences, Laboratory of (November 2016 to October 2017), the dissection of 354 Hydrobiology, Faculty of Science and Technology, anurans specimens belonging to 23 species revealed 11 parasitic nematode taxa (Amplicaecum africanum, Anisakis University of Félix Houphoüet-Boigny, Abidjan, Côte simplex, Camallanus dimitrovi, Chabaudus leberrei, d’Ivoire. Cosmocerca ornata, Filaria sp., Oswaldocruzia sp., Oxysomatium brevicaudatum, Rhabdias bufonis, Rhabdias Submission: 21 November 2019 sp1. and Rhabdias sp 2). Most of the Nematodes harvested in the small intestine have a broad spectrum infestation. They parasitize several species of different families. They therefore have a broad or euryxene specificity. The prevalence of the Anurans is higher in the rainy season than in the dry season. Thus, the increase in the number of host species causes an increase in the number of parasitic Helminth species. -

Paul Smith,1,2 Karina Atkinson,2 Jean-Paul Brouard,2 Helen Pheasey2 Submitted December 30, 2014. Geographical sampling bias and restricted search methodologies have resulted in the distribution of Paraguayan reptiles and amphibians being patchily known. Available data is almost entirely based on brief collecting trips and rapid ecological inventories, often several decades apart, which inevitably struggle to detect more inconspicuous species and patterns of abundance. This has led to a deficit in our knowledge of the true distribution and abun- dance of Paraguayan reptiles and amphibians. The establishment of the NGO Para La Tierra at Reserva Natural Laguna Blanca (RNLB), Depto. San Pedro, Paraguay allowed the first modern sustained, multi-method inventory of Paraguayan reptiles and amphibians to be performed at a single site. Despite the small size of the reserve (804 ha), a total of 57 reptiles (12 of national conservation concern) and 32 amphibians (one of national conserva- tion concern) were collected during five years of random sampling, qualifying RNLB as the most biodiverse re- serve for reptiles and amphibians in the country. Six species occurring at RNLB have been found at no other Para- guayan locality. Legal protection for this private reserve expired in January 2015 and the conservation implica- tions of the inventory results are discussed. It is proposed that the long term legal protection of the reserve be con- sidered a national conservation priority and that the diversity of the herpetofauna be recognized with the designa- tion of RNLB as Paraguay’s first Important Area for the Conservation of Amphibians and Reptiles. -
