New Records of the Togo Toad, Sclerophrys Togoensis, from South-Eastern Ivory Coast
Herpetology Notes, volume 12: 501-508 (2019) (published online on 19 May 2019) New records of the Togo Toad, Sclerophrys togoensis, from south-eastern Ivory Coast Basseu Aude-Inès Gongomin1, N’Goran Germain Kouamé1,*, and Mark-Oliver Rödel2 Abstract. Reported are new records of the forest toad, Sclerophrys togoensis, from south-eastern Ivory Coast. A small population was found in the rainforest of Mabi and Yaya Classified Forests. These forests and Taï National Park in the western part of the country are the only known and remaining Ivorian habitats of this species. Sclerophrys togoensis is confined to primary and slightly degraded rainforest. Known sites should be urgently and effectively protected from further forest loss. Keywords. Herpetology Notes, volume 14: 1051-1065 (2021) (published online on 09 August 2021) Amphibians and reptiles of a proposed iron ore mining concession in southern Cameroon Nono L. Gonwouo1,*, Arnaud M.F. Tchassem1, Thomas M. Doherty-Bone2,3, and Mark-Oliver Rödel4 Abstract. We present a checklist of amphibian and reptile species that occur in the Ntem Iron ore mining concession in southern Cameroon, compiled as part of a broader biodiversity impact survey during a two-week herpetofaunal survey. Visual and acoustic encounter surveys were carried out during day and night, covering the entire area of mining exploration. We document the presence of 38 amphibian and 28 reptile species. The most notable observation was a 150-km southward range extension of Didynamipus sjostedti. Other species of conservation concern include Conraua goliath, Leptodactylodon albiventris, L. ventrimarmoratus, Osteolaemus tetraspis, Varanus niloticus, and Kinixys erosa. These and numerous other forest-dwelling species indicate the intact nature of herpetofauna forest assemblages at the study sites. Efforts to conserve the herpetofauna at these sites should focus on protecting and monitoring the intact forest corridors linking the concession to a neighbouring forest reserve, as well as plans for restoration once extraction is completed. The food intake of the species of Germain Gourène Ptychadena genus takes place in the morning from 6h to 12h and in the evening between 18h and 24h Nangui Abrogoua University with peaks located at 12h and 24 h respectively. Hoplobatrachus occipitalis feeds on 3h to 9h and from Laboratory of Environment and 15h to 21h with peaks located at 9h and 21h. Most of the food bolus in both species of Ptychadena genus Aquatic Biology, UFR-SGE, 02 corresponding to the peaks is composed of Insects. Hoplobatrachus occipitalis is mainly feeds on BP 801, Abidjan 02 Côte d’Ivoire amphibians at 9h and molluscs at 21h. Department of Zoology, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria *Corresponding author's e-mail: [email protected] (Received: 11th September, 2015; Accepted: 30th November, 2015) ABSTRACT The food and feeding habits of Hoplobatrachus occipitalis (Dicroglossidae), in Obafemi Awolowo Campus, Ile-Ife were evaluated. This was with a view to determining the feeding behaviour and the foraging preference for prey by the species. The ingested food items were retrieved by stomach flushing and viewed under a dissecting microscope and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. The rate of feeding activity was estimated as the percentage of stomach containing food with respect to the total number of stomachs examined. One hundred and fifty eight (158) adult specimens of H. occipitalis with Snout-Vent length (SVL) varying from 7.60 ± 0.23 cm to 12.4 ± 0.18 cm were utilized for this study. The rate of feeding activity in the frog was estimated at 92.41% while the Vacuity index was 7.59 %. A total of Eight hundred and fifty four prey items which belonged to 15 categories were recovered from the stomachs of specimens collected from the four sampled locations. Of these, ants (24.60 %), earthworms (18.97 %), and termites (15.57 %) made up the dominant prey item categories. The study concluded that Hoplobatrachus occipitalis in Obafemi Awolowo University Campus was an opportunistic feeder which consumed a variety of food items depending on their availability. -
