/ earthquake Situation Report No. 1 11 November 2012

This report is produced by OCHA on behalf of the Humanitarian Coordinator. It covers the period of 11 November.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES  On 11 November, an earthquake registering 6.8 on the Richter scale was recorded 50 kilometers north of in , 115 kilometers north of Mandalay. Shwebo, Khin-U and Kanablu Township in Sagaing Division, and Singu and Thabeikkyin Townships of Mandalay Region are reportedly affected.  Government reports indicate at least 7 causalities and dozens injured and four people missing. Damage to houses, public buildings and infrastructure is reported in both Sagaing and Mandalay Regions.

II. Situation Overview

At 07.42 on 11 November an earthquake registering 6.8 on the Richter scale was recorded approximately 50 kilometers north of Shwebo Township in Sagaing Division, some 115 kilometers north of Mandalay. Initial information reported the magnitude being 7 on the Richter scale; however this was downgraded to 6.8. One aftershock was recorded approximately half hour later (5.0 magnitude), with reports of another aftershock of 5.8 of the Richter scale in Mandalay at 17.20. The earthquake was felt across a wide region including Myanmar, Yunnan region in china, Lao PDR and Thailand. Shwebo, Khin-U and Townships in Sagaing Division, and Singu and Thabeikkyin Townships of Mandalay Division are reportedly affected. The government indicates that there at least 7 causalities and dozens injured and 4 people missing. Damage to houses, public buildings and infrastructure is reported in both Sagaing and Mandalay Divisions. Assessment of damages and casualties is still ongoing. The Relief and Resettlement Department (RRD) of the Ministry of Social Welfare has reported that there has been significant damage to houses, infrastructure and public buildings including primary and secondary schools, Monasteries and Pagodas in various locations. Damage is reported particularly along the Ayeyarwaddy River, which in part, forms the border between the two regions. Some structures built along both sides of the Ayeyarwaddy River near the epicenter are reported to have been badly affected. There have been serious damages to the Yadana Theinga Bridge which was under construction at Kyauk (Sagaing Division) and New Nyeing Village (Mandalay Region). One person is reported dead, with four missing and at least 15 workers sustaining injuries, including six in serious conditions. Kyauk Myaung, on the west bank in Sagaing Division is said to be particularly hard hit with two Buddhist Monasteries collapsing and another two people reported dead. There are also reports of casualties and injuries from the collapse of a gold mine. At least 100 houses have been damaged between Thabeikkyin and Shwebo Townships. RRD has responded by supplying 100 tents, tarpaulins and relief items and has contacted the Myanmar Engineering Society for technical support. A housing project to reconstruct damaged houses will be required. The Vice President, Dr. Sai Mauk Kham and Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, U Phon Shwe accompanied the Mandalay Chief Minister, U Ye Myint to the affected areas on 11 November. The Minister of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Dr. Myat Myat Ohn Khin and the Sagaing Chief Minister, Tha Aye are visiting affected areas in Sagaing. The Humanitarian Coordinator is in contact with Government officials and offered his condolence, and support of the humanitarian community.
