Executive Director and Founder, Row New York David Huntington Michael B. Smith Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison York College Emily Keeton Credit Suisse WELCOME Thank you very much for joining us tonight as we celebrate our sixth year of empowering young women to achieve excellence—both on the water and off. None of what we do at Row New York would be possible without support from each and everyone here tonight.

A difficult reality facing all non-profits today, especially in New York City, is that raising money becomes more challenging when the economy is struggling. The hard times resulting from this financial crisis are felt by all, but they are felt most by those who have the least to begin with.

This is where Row New York comes in. Each year, the support we provide brings more than 1,000 hours of free and academic programming into the lives of girls from under-resourced neighborhoods. But the impact of our programming does not end when a participant graduates from Row New York and goes on to college. In fact , in some ways it has only just begun. The experience of working with their teammates , six days a week year round, to master a difficult sport that requires great patience and strength leaves our girls with the self-confidence and work ethic they need to achieve great things in college, their careers, and their communities.

With your help, Row New York will continue to provide invaluable resources to the young women we serve. Your support provides funding for SAT courses, coaching, college visits, swim lessons, and many other important things. Most importantly, when you choose to support Row New York, you are making a commitment to empowering a group of young women here in New York City.

Now, more than ever, Row New York and its participants need your support. Thank you for joining us here tonight and please feel free to come visit us on the water anytime!

With many thanks,

“If I feel like I’m not doing well in a subject, I’m not going to give up on it. Amanda Kraus Executive Director I’m just going to study harder and work harder. Before Row New York, if I wasn’t doing well, I wouldn’t try.” EVENT CHAIRS

Helen Marshall is the 18th Borough President of Queens, the first African American and the second woman to assume the post of the highest elected official in a borough with a population of more than 2.2 million people. We are pleased and proud to make this an evening of special thanks honoring her support of Row New York as well as her many years of public service for the people of Queens.

Queens Borough President Marshall served five terms on the New York State Assembly and represented the 21st District in the New York City Council for ten years before her election to her current office. In each of these positions, she has worked to unify and enrich the diverse constituency she leads and represents. Among her many efforts to build and strengthen communities in Queens are years of dedicated support of quality programs for underserved youth.

Her generous contributions to Row New York include a beautiful new Swift Boat, christened The Helen Marshall in November 2007, and allocation of a $5.5 million grant to renovate the public boathouse on Meadow Lake. But more than just generous financial support, Queens Borough President Marshall has demonstrated a true understanding of the value of the work we do and the importance of strong programming to empower the girls and young women of Queens. OUR PROGRAMS

1. A year-round competitive rowing and academic program for high school girls . 2. A learn-to-row and teamwork-building program for high school girls. 3. A learn-to-row and teamwork-building program for middle school girls. 4. A summer learn-to-row camp for NYC children and youth. All programs are free of charge to our participants.

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

The expectation of excellence from the girls on the Row New York team includes both rowing and academics. These two program components are mutually rein - forcing: the discipline and determination required of a successful rower also helps the girls of Row New York to be successful students. “Rowing is a beautiful sport like no other. The sport of rowing combines balance and speed with strength and endurance, but more than a total body workout, it is the ultimate team sport, where no one I’ve dreamt about the heartbeat (the sound person is the star. Success depends upon athletes working seamlessly together to move faster, creating the strong desire to excel, both as individuals and as a of the oars feathering, squaring, dropping group.

The Row New York academic program combines individualized tutoring and into the water all at once) since I started. homework help, SAT prep, college research and application assistance, college visits, and a guest speaker series. Our Academic Director and Math and Science Tutors collect report cards to track each girl’s progress and to focus on special My dream and goals have a lot to do with areas of need. rowing and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” With this dual focus on athletics and academics, success at Row New York comes in many forms. On any given day in our program, success might mean achieving a personal best erg score or an improved grade on the SAT prep test, earning a seat in the first boat, or simply working together as a team to row from one end of the lake to the other.

By setting small, achievable goals, the relationship between hard work and accomplishment becomes clear. Some of our girls go from failing many or most of their classes to being successful, confident students. Others come into the program overweight and out of shape and after a year, or even after only a few months, they are leaner, stronger, and healthier. Getting into the college of their choice, and possibly even earning rowing or academic scholarships, are the longer-term rewards that can set them on a path to lifelong success. AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE CAMILLE EVERETT & CHARLOTTE RENDON

Camille Everett and Charlotte Rendon are two strong young women who truly represent the standard of athletic and academic excellence Row New York works to imbue in all of its participants.

Rowing together for the past two years, Camille and Charlotte helped the Row New York team earn a berth in the semi-finals in the US Rowing Club National Championships in summer 2007, and powered the varsity 4+ to an impressive second place finish at the New York State Rowing Championships in summer 2008—the team's first medal at a major regional regatta. Excelling as much off the water as on, Camille and Charlotte were two of three participants in the first year of Row New York's Summer Start Internship Program, spending three weeks in August working at the law firm Clifford Chance.

When Camille joined Row New York in summer 2004, she was only in the eighth grade, but Head Coach Previn Chandraratna recognized her enthusiasm and potential and accepted her into the competitive program. Camille has gone on to be not only a team leader but also one of the winningest Row New Yorkers in the history of the team.

Charlotte Rendon joined the Row New York team in fall 2006. Her strength—both physical and mental—earned her a seat in the varsity 4+ after only a year with the team. Displaying amazing toughness and determination, Charlotte is one of the only Row New York lightweights to crack the open 4+, and has been a mainstay of the team for the past two years.

Because of their hard work and tremendous commitment to the team, we are proud to honor them both with the 2008 Row New York Award for Excellence.
