SENATE EXPANDING THE BLUEPRINT FOR SENATE REFORM '99'99 for the record: Alberta’s 1998 senate election introduction “The first action taken by Pierre Elliot Trudeau as prime minister at his inaugural cabinet meeting in 1968 turned out to be prescient. He appointed his first senator...Trudeau told cabinet that despite the appointment, he still favoured Senate reform as promised during the election. As we now know, 30 years later, it never happened. In fact, Trudeau’s last action as prime minister 16 years after the cabinet meeting was to leave patronage appointments to the Senate for his successor John Turner. It played a major role in the Liberals’ brutal defeat in the 1984 election at the hands of Brian Mulroney and the Progressive Conservatives, who also promised reforms.” From a news article in the CALGARY HERALD, Feb 4/99, Pg. A8. Such is the story of Senate reform – while many Canadians express commitment to the idea, this “convoy” is not moving very fast. The road to meaningful Senate reform has been long, winding, and full of potholes, and while the debates, discussion, reports, conferences, and scandals have made for some pretty impressive scenery, the destination remains somewhere beyond the horizon. To be sure, the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords did propel us further down the road by securing a place for Senate reform on the national agenda, but that scenery too is fading from memory. And if the road were not yet bumpy enough, Ottawa continues to put up roadblocks by refusing to consider any alternatives to the Senate status quo. -

Despite the well-intentioned nature of these efforts, they have been criticized for producing negative consequences, such as, re-victimizing battered women, ignoring abusive men, and failing to protect children. -

Goodwill, 2009 ii ABSTRACT This research project generated a categorical scheme to describe the facilitation of gang entry and exit for Aboriginal ex-gang members using the Critical Incident Technique (Flanagan, 1954; Woolsey, 1986) as a method of qualitative data analysis. Former gang members responded to the questions: (a) What facilitated gang entry for you? (b) What facilitated gang exit for you? Participants provided 103 and 136 critical incidents which were categorized into two separate category schemes each containing 13 different categories. The 13 categories for gang entry were; engaging in physical violence, proving one’s worth, hanging around delinquent activity, family involved in gangs and following a family pattern; going to prison, gang becoming family and support system, looking up to gang members and admiring gang lifestyle, becoming dependant on gang, experiencing unsafe or unsupportive parenting practices, gaining respect by rank increase, reacting to authority, caught in a cycle of fear, and partying. The 13 categories for gang exit were; working in the legal workforce, accepting support from family or girlfriend, helping others stay out of or move away from gang life, not wanting to go back to jail, accepting responsibility for family, accepting guidance and protection, participating in ceremony, avoiding alcohol, publically expressing that you are out of the gang, wanting legitimate relationships outside gang life, experiencing a native brotherhood, stopping self from reacting like a gangster, and acknowledging the drawbacks of gang violence. -

To formally open our productions, Theatre Calgary will pay tribute and recognize the Indigenous people of the Treaty 7 region as the past, present and future stewards of this land where our performance takes place. In response to the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, the act of giving territorial or land acknowledgement has now become best practice across Canada. In our efforts to embrace the language and spirit of reconciliation, we recognize that our practice will evolve as Theatre Calgary strengthens our relationships within local Indigenous communities and with artists. Theatre Calgary is committed to maintaining regular engagement with Indigenous and community leaders for consultation on best practices. Territorial Acknowledgement Welcome to Theatre Calgary. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge that this performance is taking place on Treaty 7, signed at Blackfoot Crossing in 1877.
