Research: Toronto Author Natalee Caple is named Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Programme writer-in residence Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Visiting Writer: Alistair MacLeod U of C engineering professor Ludo Zanzotto develops new environmentally-friendly and durable asphalt made partially from recycled plastics and rubber tires. Endowments: Allan Markin, chairman of Canadian Natural Resources, donates $18 million to establish an Institute of Public Health. The massive 9.3 magnitude earthquake, epicentered just off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, generates enormous tsunami waves that crash into the coastal areas of a number of nations including Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Burma and Indonesia.
