And, despite our challenges as a community, 2020 has provided David McKinnon us with the opportunity to re-evaluate how we work together and to consider different ways we can help Mark Saar students through the lens of increasing access, providing equity supports and filling gaps created by the Mike Shaikh pandemic and disrupted classroom learning. I am both proud and grateful for the extraordinary efforts of our Dr. Richard Sigurdson Board of Governors and our small and mighty team of wonderful staff. Thank you. Melanie Sortland Finding new ways to make technology work for us has been impactful on so many levels this past year with all of our board meetings, student award sessions, and staff interactions moving online. It really highlighted that access to reliable technology was no longer a “nice to have” but a necessity, and the legacy of this pandemic has Honourary Ambassadors developed a greater focus on ensuring that we are all connected on multiple levels. What began as an emergency campaign to help students suddenly learning at home is evolving into a permanent resource to Gerry Burger-Martindale Joanne create a technology loan program for any student in need throughout the school year. 2020 has revealed the Cuthbertson cracks within our community and has reinforced and reinvigorated our fundraising priorities. David Pickersgill Thank you for supporting Calgary Board of Education students and the work of EducationMatters – your investments into our most precious resource, our children, are making a difference now and for the future. We are incredibly grateful to have you as partners in the important work of helping our students learn and grow in our community. Nancy Close, Chair Staff Monica Bryan Marilyn Field Kenza Filali Alicia Hope-Ross Evelyn Martinez Emil Nguyen Helen Nowlan-Walls Kathryn Schilman EducationMatters exists to support Calgary’s students and works collaboratively with the Calgary Board of Education and their schools whom we thank for consistently going above and beyond. • Canadian Official Historians and the Writing of the World Wars Tim Cook
Canadian Official Historians and the Writing of the World Wars Tim Cook BA Hons (Trent), War Studies (RMC) This thesis is submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Humanities and Social Sciences UNSW@ADFA 2005 Acknowledgements Sir Winston Churchill described the act of writing a book as to surviving a long and debilitating illness. As with all illnesses, the afflicted are forced to rely heavily on many to see them through their suffering. Thanks must go to my joint supervisors, Dr. Jeffrey Grey and Dr. Steve Harris. Dr. Grey agreed to supervise the thesis having only met me briefly at a conference. With the unenviable task of working with a student more than 10,000 kilometres away, he was harassed by far too many lengthy emails emanating from Canada. He allowed me to carve out the thesis topic and research with little constraints, but eventually reined me in and helped tighten and cut down the thesis to an acceptable length. Closer to home, Dr. Harris has offered significant support over several years, leading back to my first book, to which he provided careful editorial and historical advice. He has supported a host of other historians over the last two decades, and is the finest public historian working in Canada. His expertise at balancing the trials of writing official history and managing ongoing crises at the Directorate of History and Heritage are a model for other historians in public institutions, and he took this dissertation on as one more burden. I am a far better historian for having known him.
