    Complete Index of Common Names: Supplement to Tropical Timbers of the World (AH 607) by Nancy Ross Preface Since it was published in 1984, Tropical Timbers of the World has proven to be an extremely valuable reference to the properties and uses of tropical woods. It has been particularly valuable for the selection of species for specific products and as a reference for properties information that is important to effective pro- cessing and utilization of several hundred of the most commercially important tropical wood timbers. If a user of the book has only a common or trade name for a species and wishes to know its properties, the user must use the index of common names beginning on page 451. However, most tropical timbers have numerous common or trade names, depending upon the major region or local area of growth; furthermore, different species may be know by the same common name. Herein lies a minor weakness in Tropical Timbers of the World. The index generally contains only the one or two most frequently used common or trade names. If the common name known to the user is not one of those listed in the index, finding the species in the text is impossible other than by searching the book page by page. This process is too laborious to be practical because some species have 20 or more common names. This supplement provides a complete index of common or trade names. This index will prevent a user from erroneously concluding that the book does not contain a specific species because the common name known to the user does not happen to be in the existing index.

Recibido 6 de diciembre, 2010; aceptado 30 de junio, 2011 Abstract DNA barcoding has been proposed as a practical and standardized tool for species identification. However, the determination of the appropriate marker DNA regions is still a major challenge. In this study, we eXtracted DNA from 27 plant species belonging to 27 different families native of Costa Rica, amplified and sequenced the plastid genes matK and rpoC1 and the intergenic spacer trnH-psbA. Bioinformatic analyses were performed with the aim of determining the utility of these markers as possible barcodes to discriminate among species and for phylogenetic reconstruction. From the markers selected, the trnH-psbA spacer was the most variable in terms of genetic distance and the most promising region for barcoding. However, it presented a limited use for constructing phylogenies due to the compleXity of its alignment. The locus matK was less variable but was also useful for species discrimination and for phylogenetic tree generation. The rpoC1 region was highly conserved and suitable for phylogenetic studies, but presented a limited utility as a barcode. The marker combination matK and rpoC1 provided the best resolution for establishing valid phylogenetic relationships among the analyzed plant families.

Over the years, areas affected by salinity have increased dramatically in Thailand, resulting in an urgent need for reclamation of salt-affected areas using salinity tolerant plant species. In this context, seed germination is an important process in plant reproduction and dispersion. This research aimed to study the ability of 16 fabaceous species to germinate and tolerate salt concentrations of at 6 different levels (concentration of sodium chloride solution, i.e., 0, 8, 16, 24, 32, and 40 dS m-1). The germination test was conducted daily for 30 days, and parameters such as germination percentage, germination speed, and germination synchrony were calculated. The electrical conductivity (EC50) was used to compare the salt-tolerant ability among the 16 species.

ANDERSON Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Connecticut, Box U-43, Storrs, CT 06269-3043 ABSTRACT.-The Miskitu are one of the three indigenous groups of eastern Nicaragua. Their uses of 353 species of plants in 262 genera and 89 families were documented in two years of fieldwork. Included are 310 species of medicinals, 95 species of food plants, and 127 species used for construction and crafts, dyes and tannins, firewood, and forage. Only 14 of 50 domesticated food species are native to the New World tropics, and only three to Mesoamerica. A majority of plant species used for purposes other than food or medicine are wild species native to eastern Nicaragua. Miskitu medicinal plants are used to treat more than 50 human ailments. Most (80%) of the medicinal plants are native to eastern Nicaragua, and two thirds have some bioactive principle. Many medicinal plants are herbs (40%) or trees (30%), and leaves are the most frequently used plant part. Herbal remedies are most often prepared as decoctions that are administered orally. The Miskitu people are undergoing rapid acculturation caused by immigration of outsiders. This study is important not only for documenting uses of plants for science in general, but also because it provides a written record in particular of the oral tradition of medicinal uses of plants of and for the Miskitu. Blume) รองลงมา คือ เสี้ยวป่า (Bauhinia saccocalyx Pierre) และแดง (Xylia xylocarpa (Roxb.) W. Theob. var. kerrii (Craib & Hutch.) I.C. Nielsen) ตามล าดับ ส่วนไม้ต้นชนิดที่มีค่าดัชนีความส าคัญสูงที่สุด คือ เสี้ยวป่า ติ้วเกลี้ยง และแดง ตามล าดับ ค่าดัชนี ความหลากหลายของไม้ต้น มีค่าเท่ากับ 3.6656 ค่าความสม่ าเสมอในการกระจายตัว มีค่าเท่ากับ 0.7995 ค่าความหลากหลาย มีค่าเท่ากับ 39.0785 นอกจากนั้นพบว่ามีไม้พื้นล่าง จ านวน 61 วงศ์ 137 สกุล 145 ชนิด ไม้พื้นล่างชนิดที่พบมากที่สุด ได้แก่ พลูช้าง (Scindapus officinalis

    CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study Throughout history, natural products have continued to play significant role as medicines and serve as repository of numerous bioactive compounds that serve as important leads in drug discovery (Dias et al., 2012). The significance of natural product based medicines is demonstrated by the reliance of more than half of the world’s population on natural products for their primary health care (Ekeanyanwu, 2011). The role of natural products in meeting the health needs of the Nigerian population has been stressed in many studies (Sofowora, 1982; Osemene et al., 2013). These natural products are rarely used solely for a particular disease condition. In some cases, a particular herbal product may be used for the treatment of related disease conditions or disease conditions with similar pathogenesis. There are situations where single herbal product is used for numerous unrelated disease conditions and for general body healing – this is the category where traditional use of Millettia aboensis falls. The contribution of natural products in disease control has been well acclaimed; however, the use of many plant based medicines for the treatment of disease conditions is yet to be fully accepted due to lack of scientific evidence on their efficacy and safety (Firenzuoli and Gori, 2007). The knowledge and uses of some medicinal plants are still based on cultural or folkloric believes. The full therapeutic potentials of herbal products would optimally be harnessed when their efficacy and toxicity are clearly validated and documented using scientific procedures. 1 Millettia aboensis is one of the plants considered to be an all-purpose plant in most parts of Africa because of the multiplicity of its use (Banzouzi et al., 2008).

The country has approximately 12,050 species of plants, which account for 8% of estimated plant species found globally. However, the forest cover of Thailand is under threats: habitat degradation, illegal logging, shifting cultivation and human settlement are the main causes of the reduction in forest area. As a result, rates of biodiversity loss have been high for some decades. The most effective tool to conserve biodiversity is the designation of protected areas (PA). The effective and most scientifically robust approach for designing networks of reserve systems is systematic conservation planning, which is designed to identify conservation priorities on the basis of analysing spatial patterns in species distributions and associated threats. The designation of PAs of Thailand were initially based on expert consultations selecting the areas that are suitable for conserving forest resources, not systematically selected. Consequently, the PA management was based on individual management plans for each PA. The previous work has also identified that no previous attempt has been made to apply the principles and methods of systematic conservation planning. Additionally, tree species have been neglected in previous analyses of the coverage of PAs in Thailand.
