Bauhinia tomentosa and Bauhinia racemosa also possess anti-diabetic, anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-obesity and antihyperlipidemic activities. Therefore, the correct identification of these plants is critically important. The aim was to investigate the comparative morpho-micrometric analysis of 3 species of Bauhinia belonging to the family Leguminosae (Fabaceae) by using conventional as well as scanning electron microscopy to support species identification. In B. racemosa, epidermal cells are polygonal with anticlinical walls; whereas wavy walled cells are found in B. tomentosa and B. vahlii. Anisocytic stomata are present in B. racemosa, while B. tomentosa shows the presence of paracytic stomata and anomocytic stomata in B. vahlii. Stomatal numbers and stomatal indices were found to be more in B. vahlii than B. tomentosa and B. racemosa. On the other hand, uniseriate, unicellular covering trichomes are found in B. racemosa and B. tomentosa but B. vahlii contains only uniseriate, multicellular covering trichomes. Based on these micromorphological features, a diagnostic key was developed for identification of the particular species which helps a lot in pharmaceutical botany, taxonomy and horticulture, in terms of species identification. -

Accepted 24 March, 2009 This paper presents the results of an assessment of the ethnobotanical uses of some plants recorded in upper Nyong valley forest implemented by the Cameroon wildlife conservation society project (CWCS). Forestry transects in 6 localities, followed by socio-economic study were conducted in 250 local inhabitants. As results, medicinal information on 140 plants species belonging to 60 families were recorded. Local people commonly use plant parts which included leaves, bark, seed, whole plant, stem and flower to cure many diseases. According to these plants, 8% are use to treat malaria while 68% intervenes to cure several others diseases as described on. There is very high demand for medicinal plants due to prevailing economic recession; however their prices are high as a result of prevailing genetic erosion. This report highlighted the need for the improvement of effective management strategies focusing on community forestry programmes and aims to encourage local people participation in the conservation of this forest heritage to achieve a sustainable plant biodiversity and conservation for future posterity. -

This work was undertaken in order to know the therapeutic uses of Ecology Research Center, Loranthaceae in the Sud-Comoé Region. Ethnobotanical surveys were conducted among regional trait University Nangui Abrogoua therapists for 3 years. In total, 7 species of Loranthaceae distributed in three genera are used to treat 33 (CRE / UNA). 08 BP 109 human diseases. Of these 33 diseases, 8 are constantly cited: diarrhea, tooth decay, high blood pressure, Abidjan 08, Côte d’Ivoire fontanelle, malaria, migraine, rheumatism and sterility. -

Mewara **Dr. Ruchi Singh Abstract Stigmasterol, -Sitosterol, Betulin, Betulinic acid, Hexacosanol-1, Octacosanol-1 were isolated from the roots of Baliospermum axillare. The structures were elucidated from spectroscopic data. Keywords: Baliospermum axillare, Euphorbiaceae, triterpenoids, long chain alcohols, long chain acids and sterols. Introduction Baliospermum axillare Blume (syn. Baliospermum montanum, Jatropha montana) belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae which is a large family of flowering plants comprising of 240 genera and around 6,000 species. Most of the Euphorbiaceae plants are herbs, but some, especially, those found in the tropics are shrubs or trees. B. axillare is commonly known as Dantimul.1 It is a shrub, native to Dehradun and grows in hilly areas, shady places, Bengal, Burma, tropical Himalayan region and Rajasthan. The plant and its different parts possess pharmacological properties such as purgative,2-4 stimulant, rubefacient, anti-asthmatic, in snake-bite,5 in dropsy, jaundice,2 cathartic,6 rheumatism,7 abdominal tumours, cancer, toothache as acronarcotic poison8, and sedative.9 Latex is applied to the affected parts in case of bodyache and joint pains. Phytochemical studies on different parts of B. axillare led to the isolation of number of compounds. Stigmasterol, -sitosterol, 3-acetoxytaraxer-14-en-28-oic acid, 5-stigmastane-3,6-dione, stigmast-4-en-3- one, -sitosteryl-- D-glucopyranoside and stigmastery - - D - gluco-pyranoside have been isolated from its stem. Montanin (a daphnane polyol ester), baliospermin, and other tigliane polyol esters have been isolated from aerial parts of the plant. -

The parts of the plant species used in the treatment of various diseases ranged from leaves, stem, root, and bark to fruit only, or a combination of two or more parts from a single species or with those of other species. Introduction During the past decade, traditional medicinal practices have become a topic of global relevance. In many developing nations, a significant number of indigenous populations rely on medicinal plants to meet their health care needs. According to Lewis and Elvin-Lewis (2003), botanically derived medicinals have played a major role in human societies throughout history and prehistory and people have used plants as medicine since the beginning of civilization, as they were believed to have healing powers (Connie and King 2003). The use of plants in the tropical and subtropical regions is diversified and most of the uses are for medicine, source of food, clothing and shelter. But the medicinal uses of plants are rapidly declining among the present generation of local people as a consequence of modernization and civilization (Cox 2005). -
