In pursuit of the last of these we launched our biannual journal Foundations in 2003. The aim is to provide a blend of articles, notes, queries and letters, all relating to medieval genealogy (pre-1500). The journal is also used as a communication channel with members and subscribers to the FMG. The journal is published in both printed and web-based formats. Further details are available on our website (http://fmg.ac/) or from the address printed inside the cover. With the completion of Volume 1 of the journal, comprising six issues over three years, we felt an index was essential and the editorial team is delighted to present it to you. The printed index is being mailed to those who subscribed to issue 6 (with or without earlier issues) while the electronic version is available to all registered Users on our website. We hope it is error-free, but any corrections that are notified will be added to the web version. The printed index will also be included in the composite version of Volume 1 when it is published. The index is in five sections, the largest being the index to people. The complete Table of Contents to Vol.1 is also provided. The following conventions have been followed. Although the principle of indexing by surname has been followed, this is not applicable in many cases to medieval names, and geographical or other descriptors have been used where available. In most cases prepositions or articles (of, de, le, la) have been omitted except where these are invariably used as part of the name (eg “Gaunt, John of”). Thus “Robert de Everingham” is indexed as “Everingham, Robert”. Nobility are indexed by the family name where given in the article (“Beaumont, Isabel, Duchess of Lancaster”) or otherwise by the geographical element of their title (“Arundel, Thomas, Earl of”). Royalty, clerics and a few other cases are indexed by their personal/Christian name (“Edward III, King of England”; “Arnulf, Bishop of Metz”; “Thibaud the Old”). Complete consistency is difficult to achieve and the compiler apologises for any confusion. In the Index of Places, British locations are identified where possible with the three letter “Chapman” county code. These codes are widely used and may be found on a number of Internet sites or in general reference works on British genealogy. Foundations Vol.1 was published in 6 parts, but as the page sequence was continuous no reference is given in the index to individual part numbers. They may be referenced as follows: Part 1: pages 1-72; Part 2: pages 73-136; Part 3: pages 137-208; Part 4: 209-304; Part 5: 305-392; Part 6: 393-464.
