2010 Annual Report SERVING FAIRFIELd (CT), BRONX, DUtcHEss, ORANGE, PUTNAM, RocKLAND, SULLIVAN, ULstER AND WEstcHEstEr (NY) COUNTIES WESTCHESTER GOLF ASSOCIATION Caddie Scholarship Fund,JUNE 30, 2010 Inc. FISCAL YEAR ANNUAL REPORT Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship www.westchestergolf.orgFund, Inc. OUR MISSION The Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund (CSF) fosters the core values of personal responsibility, integrity and perseverance by giving young men and women in service to golf the opportunity to further enhance their lives through the pursuit of higher education. The Fund provides college scholarships to qualified candidates based on financial need. OUR HISTORY The WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund was established in 1956 by renowned golfer Willie P. Turnesa and his good friend, Udo Reinach. With over 2,000 recipients since its founding, the Caddie Scholarship Fund has provided in excess of $9,000,000 in scholarship funding. OUR SCHOLARSHIPS The CSF is one of the largest organizations of its kind in the nation. Caddie scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $8,000 per year for undergraduate study, or for study at an accredited trade school. Maximum awards are reserved for exceptional students with exceptional need. Awards are granted for the duration of the program. ELIGIBILITY Applicants must demonstrate financial need, have applied to or currently attend an accredited school, and have worked a minimum of two seasons in service to golf at a WGA member club. Service to golf includes caddying, golf course maintenance, and work in the pro shop, bag room or on the range. 2 WESTCHESTER GOLF ASSOCIATION FUNDING The CSF finances scholarship awards primarily through contributions from individuals, WGA member clubs, alumni, corporations, and foundations. Funding sources include: BAG TAG PROGRAM Our major source of funding is through the Bag Tag Program. The purpose of the Program is to reach out for support from members of clubs belonging to the Westchester Golf Association. NAMED AND ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Named and Endowed Scholarships give donors an opportunity to celebrate their commitment to education and golf. Endowed Scholarships provide an enduring legacy for individuals, families and organizations. Named Scholarships pay tribute to an indi- vidual or achievement. EVENTS Each year we hold special events such as our Pro Am and Golf Marathon to raise funds and increase awareness in the community. The WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Over Fifty Years of Helping Those in Service to Golf Attain a College Education Cover photo: Hole 11 at GlenArbor Golf Club CADDIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND, INC 3 FROM THE PRESIDENT September 1, 2010 When our founders, Willie Turnesa and Udo Reinach, decided that it would be a worthy goal to help a few caddies in their quest for college degrees, little could they have imagined that fifty-five years later the Fund would have assisted more than 2,000 scholars, and provided more than $9,000,000 in college scholarships. This year alone we added seventy-eight new schol- ars, bringing our current total to 276 for a four-year commit- ment of $3.5 million. Like students across America, our scholars are struggling with the ever widening gap between soaring tuition costs and limited financial aid. Borrowing has risen to staggering levels, often putting students and their parents far behind the eight- ball when those loans become due. The Fund’s ability to address the growing needs of our scholars relies on the generosity of the members of Westchester Golf Association clubs and the all-out efforts of our club representatives, board members and volun- teers. We are immensely appreciative of their generous contri- butions of time and money. Some of our most satisfying experiences come each year as we make individual awards to our scholars. As gratifying as it is to see their reactions when we announce their awards, it is even more gratifying to see the way so many of our scholars have taken full advantage of their educations and developed into proud and productive citizens. The work we are doing is paying dividends. The fiscal year financials, highlighted later in this report, reflect the general economic uncertainties that prevailed, as well as the end of the long-term sponsorship by The Journal News. Although it was perhaps the most difficult year the Fund has experienced in its fundraising activities, we are pleased with the results, owing to the success of the inaugural Golf Marathon combined with contributions received through the Bag Tag Program and the Pro-Am. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Officers and staff of the CSF, and of our scholarship recipients, we thank you for your continuing support. The mission continues to be challenging, but the rewards are great. Sincerely, Leland B. Paton President 4 WESTCHESTER GOLF ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTIONS Ways to Help • Join the Bag Tag Program Individuals, club members, CSF alumni and businesses may become sponsors by donating a minimum contribution of $60. LIFE AND LEARNING XIX PROCEEDINGS OF THE NINETEENTH UNIVERSITY FACULTY FOR LIFE CONFERENCE at THE UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS SCHOOL OF LAW MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA 2009 edited by Joseph W. Koterski, S.J. KOTERSKI LIFE AND LEARNING XIX UFL University Faculty for Life University Faculty for Life was founded in 1989 to promote research, dialogue, and publication among faculty members who respect the value of human life from its inception to natural death, and to provide academic support for the pro-life position. Respect for life is especially endangered by the current cultural forces seeking to legitimize such practices as abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, and physician-assisted suicide. These topics are controversial, but we believe that they are too important to be resolved by the shouting, the news-bites, and the slogans that often dominate popular presentation of these issues. Because we believe that the evidence is on our side, we would like to assure a hearing for these views in the academic community. The issues of abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia have many dimensions–political, social, legal, medical, biological, psychological, ethical, and religious. Accordingly, we hope to promote an inter-disciplinary forum in which such issues can be discussed among scholars. We believe that by talking with one another we may better understand the values we share and become better informed in our expression and defense of them. We are distressed that the media often portray those favoring the value of human life as mindless zealots acting out of sectarian bias. We hope that our presence will change that image. We also believe that academicians united on these issues can encourage others to speak out for human life in their own schools and communities.

ABOUT WESTCHESTER COUNTRY CLUB Three-time U.S. Amateur champion Walter J. Travis laid out the two 18-hole golf courses at Westchester Country Club, just 30 miles outside New York City, that opened in 1922. The courses were built by the Philadelphia-based architectural firm of Toomey and Flynn who built the modern course at Shinnecock Hills toward the end of the same decade. The club joined the USGA on Jan. 13, 1922, several months before the courses opened for play that summer. The West Course has hosted many memorable golf events over its history. Beginning with the 1923 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the course went on to host 44 PGA Tour events. The Thunderbird Classic came to Westchester in 1963, with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus winning two of the first three years.

All rights reserved Editor’s Statement The autumn of 2020 will mark the beginning of the 50th year of the existence of Thomas Aquinas College, which is, and has been consistently, devoted to providing the beginnings of Catholic liberal education. As was stated in its founding document, “this college will explicitly define itself by the Christian Faith and the tradition of the Catholic Church. Thus theology will be both the governing principle of the whole school and that for the sake of which everything is studied.”1 Given its manifest success in this regard, the College founded The Aquinas Review in 1994 to “stimulate a continuing conversation with an every widening audience”2 about matters on which our students and faculty, the Church at large, and man as such can meditate, for the better- ment of our souls and—most of all—for the greater glory of God. Ronald P. McArthur, the founding president of Thomas Aquinas College and the founding editor of this journal, had hoped that one of the uses of this journal would be to publish not only original essays of intellectual depth, but also occasion- ally to put into circulation older essays of great worth that are underappreciated, difficult to obtain, or not available in English.

The Sixty-Fourth Commencement Exercises Tuesday, May 18, 2021 2:00 PM at Palisades Credit Union Park President Daly’s Message to the Class of 2021 STAC Class of 2021: As my first-ever STAC graduating class, I would like to congratulate you on your graduation and thank you for the respect and resilience you have demonstrated this past year. While the history books will document the devastating COVID health and economic impacts that have continued into 2021, I will always remember how my first graduating class navigated these challenges and safeguarded the entire STAC community. I will also remember how, together, we launched our Center for Social Justice and began to listen and learn from one another in our commitment to ensure that all voices are heard and that we become part of the solution in the turbulent days ahead. As you now graduate, you immediately become my first-ever group of STAC alumni, so I look forward to supporting one another in our future journeys. Please know that my door is always open for career guidance ... grad school assistance ... alumni support ... or just to share stories and discuss how best to support one another and our future students. My ask of you is that you remain active and loyal to STAC and that you always proudly represent the College and carry the “Spartan Torch.” My offer to you is to share the secret to fulfillment in life: always be your best self and support one another. This mantra was embodied by Jackie Robinson, who said: “A life is only important in the impact it has on others.” I know you will be your best self ..
