FISCAL YEAR ANNUAL REPORT Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship www.westchestergolf.orgFund, Inc. OUR MISSION The Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund (CSF) fosters the core values of personal responsibility, integrity and perseverance by giving young men and women in service to golf the opportunity to further enhance their lives through the pursuit of higher education. The Fund provides college scholarships to qualified candidates based on financial need. OUR HISTORY The WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund was established in 1956 by renowned golfer Willie P. Turnesa and his good friend, Udo Reinach. With over 2,000 recipients since its founding, the Caddie Scholarship Fund has provided in excess of $9,000,000 in scholarship funding. OUR SCHOLARSHIPS The CSF is one of the largest organizations of its kind in the nation. Caddie scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $8,000 per year for undergraduate study, or for study at an accredited trade school. Maximum awards are reserved for exceptional students with exceptional need. Awards are granted for the duration of the program. ELIGIBILITY Applicants must demonstrate financial need, have applied to or currently attend an accredited school, and have worked a minimum of two seasons in service to golf at a WGA member club. Service to golf includes caddying, golf course maintenance, and work in the pro shop, bag room or on the range. 2 WESTCHESTER GOLF ASSOCIATION FUNDING The CSF finances scholarship awards primarily through contributions from individuals, WGA member clubs, alumni, corporations, and foundations. Funding sources include: BAG TAG PROGRAM Our major source of funding is through the Bag Tag Program. The purpose of the Program is to reach out for support from members of clubs belonging to the Westchester Golf Association. NAMED AND ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Named and Endowed Scholarships give donors an opportunity to celebrate their commitment to education and golf. Endowed Scholarships provide an enduring legacy for individuals, families and organizations. Named Scholarships pay tribute to an indi- vidual or achievement. EVENTS Each year we hold special events such as our Pro Am and Golf Marathon to raise funds and increase awareness in the community. The WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Over Fifty Years of Helping Those in Service to Golf Attain a College Education Cover photo: Hole 11 at GlenArbor Golf Club CADDIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND, INC 3 FROM THE PRESIDENT September 1, 2010 When our founders, Willie Turnesa and Udo Reinach, decided that it would be a worthy goal to help a few caddies in their quest for college degrees, little could they have imagined that fifty-five years later the Fund would have assisted more than 2,000 scholars, and provided more than $9,000,000 in college scholarships. This year alone we added seventy-eight new schol- ars, bringing our current total to 276 for a four-year commit- ment of $3.5 million. Like students across America, our scholars are struggling with the ever widening gap between soaring tuition costs and limited financial aid. Borrowing has risen to staggering levels, often putting students and their parents far behind the eight- ball when those loans become due. The Fund’s ability to address the growing needs of our scholars relies on the generosity of the members of Westchester Golf Association clubs and the all-out efforts of our club representatives, board members and volun- teers. We are immensely appreciative of their generous contri- butions of time and money. Some of our most satisfying experiences come each year as we make individual awards to our scholars. As gratifying as it is to see their reactions when we announce their awards, it is even more gratifying to see the way so many of our scholars have taken full advantage of their educations and developed into proud and productive citizens. The work we are doing is paying dividends. The fiscal year financials, highlighted later in this report, reflect the general economic uncertainties that prevailed, as well as the end of the long-term sponsorship by The Journal News. Although it was perhaps the most difficult year the Fund has experienced in its fundraising activities, we are pleased with the results, owing to the success of the inaugural Golf Marathon combined with contributions received through the Bag Tag Program and the Pro-Am. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Officers and staff of the CSF, and of our scholarship recipients, we thank you for your continuing support. The mission continues to be challenging, but the rewards are great. Sincerely, Leland B. Paton President 4 WESTCHESTER GOLF ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTIONS Ways to Help • Join the Bag Tag Program Individuals, club members, CSF alumni and businesses may become sponsors by donating a minimum contribution of $60.
