POMONA CATHOLIC CELEBRATES ALL SAINTS

The seventh grade spent much of the month of October researching their name saints or another saint of their choosing. They prepared posters of their saints, telling their name, where and when they lived, what their occupation was, a quote from their saint, what they were patron of and other information. The students were well versed in their saints and were ready to answer any question. These posters were hung in the worship space as part of the décor.

Through the leadership of one of their classmates, the students dressed as their saint and processed in singing (of course) Oh When the Saints Go Marching In. These young people ministered as lectors, musicians, cantors, gift bearers and server. They were an inspiration to all.

GO OUT INTO THE DEEP Pomona Catholic Freshmen enjoyed a quiet moment with their Eucharistic Lord during their retreat. The theme of the day is "Go out into the deep." The girls wrote notes to their future self and put it in a bottle. These messages in a bottle will be opened during their Kairos retreat in 2023.

TEEN LEADERSHIP CAMP (TLC) TLC is a leadership training program for outstanding 8th graders. The program is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of District 5300. Students interacted and participated in activities with over 200 + peers from areas throughout our District which encompasses Clubs from California East, California West, Antelope Valley, Victor Valley and Southern Nevada.

This year, Andres Bustillos and Dacia Bautista were selected to attend the Teen Leader- ship Camp. Here’s what they learned and look forward to implementing:

Andres: It was good, educational experience. I enjoyed getting to know other kids. Also, being away from home taught me to be more inde- pendent. I learned that leaders come in all shapes and sizes and it takes time to develop a great leader. I also learned that to be a great leader, you must give it your all.

Dacia: I learned a lot about teen leadership such as knowing what people want in order to help them. Also, a leader is not supposed to be selfish and do things on their own. I will sur- round myself around positive people.

POMONA CATHOLIC ALUMNA VISITS POMONA FROM WASHINGTON, DC, VIA ZOOM

On Monday, November 18, Assistant Secretary of State for Education and Cultural Affairs Marie Porter Royce visited with high school students at Pomona Catholic School. Secretary Royce, who graduated from Pomona Catholic in 1979, shared her role and wise advice to the students of Mr. Tim Hernandez’s government classes.

Secretary Royce was nominated for the position by President Trump and was unanimously approved by the US Senate on March 13, 2018.

Marie received a Felician education at St. Joseph Elementary and Pomona Catholic. She attended California State Polytechnic University in Pomona where she later returned as a professor. Marie also held management positions at Proctor and Gamble and the Marriott Corporation. She was also on the boards of many non-profit organizations. Marie told the students that she got involved in community service as a teenager and created clubs in high school and college. At Cal Poly she began a mentor program and encouraged PC to do the same. She encouraged the students to find internships in their intended fields to see whether their chosen career path is the best fit for them. She also told them to get involved with their local government as she did at age 19 when she worked on campaigns to elect the Mayor of Pomona as well as members of the school board and State Assembly.

Secretary Royce shared that her department works to help make the world more peaceful. She has developed and implemented programs to train world leaders. Currently one third of the world’s leaders have attended one of the programs she has created. Secretary Royce also promoted to the girls other programs which empower women, such as the Academy of Women Entrepreneurs...

When the girls asked Secretary Royce how she manages to do so much, she said that she uses the OGSM (Objectives, goals, strategies, measures) method of planning and implementing her projects. She offered to teach this method to the girls at a future conference.

Secretary Royce urged the girls to have a clear goal and to “Go for it! Find what makes you happy when you first open your eyes in the morning and go for it. Never give up.” She also encouraged the girls to take ethics classes so that they will work in their chosen field with integrity, which will also make the world more peaceful. She also encouraged the students to apply for the Fulbright Scholarship, the Gilman Scholarship and a critical language scholarship. It is important to travel and get a broader world-view as one way to make our world more peaceful. Secretary Royce offered to connect Pomona Catholic School to a school overseas to give them a taste of a cultural exchange.

Sr. Julianna Francis Marie Vagnozzi thanked a very busy Secretary Royce for her time and inspiration, as well as for being the face of Pomona Catholic School to the world.

Pomona Catholic Students Participate In Mock Trial On November 4, 2019, eight students from Pomona Catholic School participated in the first round of Mock Trial at the L.A. County Courthouse in Los Angeles. Timothy Hernandez, history and government teacher at Pomona Catholic participated in Mock Trial himself as a student at Damien High School in LaVerne. “This extracurricular activity exists thanks to the Constitutional Rights Foundation which oversees the competition,” Mr. Hernandez reported. “When I was a participant in Mock trial,” Hernandez continued, “I was taught by probably the best coach in Damien High School History, Mr. Chuck Ballingall. After he passed away, I was asked to coach the team. It seemed like a calling to get it going and teach what I learned from Mr. Ballingall.”

The students had to study and try a murder case which included a pre-trial motion on the 4th Amendment regarding search and seizure. The pretrial motion questioned whether the piece of evidence confiscated from the office by a detective without the permission of the owner search the office was admissible in the courtroom. Both pretrial attorneys presented their statements as to why the evidence should or should not be presented as evidence for the trial. Both sides cited the facts as well as other court cases and penal code to back up their arguments. At the November 4 trial the defense won the pretrial motion and had the evidence stricken from the record. (Cont. on next page)

The Pomona Catholic team of eight students was divided into two teams, the Prosecution and the Defense. Because eight people are usually required for each team, the Pomona Catholic students had to pull double duty and take on two roles each as lawyers, witnesses, bailiff and clerk. (cont. on page 18) The students followed the normal sequence of events in a trial. After the pretrial motion was completed, the official trial began with opening statements. The prosecution first stated the case followed by the defense. Both sides presented an elaborate story of the facts in order to prove their argument.

After the opening statements, the prosecution called up their four witnesses for direct examination. The defense was given the opportunity to cross-examine these witnesses. The defense then called up their own witnesses who were subject to the same direct questioning and cross examination. The witnesses found this especially nerve-wracking since they did not know in advance what questions opposing counsel would ask.

While questioning the witnesses the attorneys from both sides were “objected” upon based on several factors—hearsay, lack of foundation, compound questions, etc. The attorneys had to defend their questions and statements and restate their question to prove their case.

The trial ended with closing statements in which both the prosecution and defense argued the legal ramification of the case. The ultimate question for the case was whether Bailey Matsumoto killed Taylor Matsumoto “beyond a reasonable doubt.” After deliberation the verdict returned was “Not guilty.” This finding gave the mock trial team an official victory for this round.

Team Roster Pomona Catholic students participating in Mack Trial were Lianne Corral, Emily Gamboa, Darlene Gonzalez, Thu Nguyen, Mary Palma, Iliana Perez, Itzel Salgado and Riley Tovar. Their moderator is Mr. Tim Hernandez. Advising the team was Megan Scott-Kakures, a retired lawyer from Rosemead.

All gifts of stock donated to PC are done so through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. For more information, call the Development Office at 909.623.5297 x13.

TUITION ASSISTANCE One in four students at Pomona Catholic depend on tuition assistance to attend. We have increased our tuition assistance program with the hope of allowing every student who wants to attend our school with the opportunity to become a Pacer. In 2016-17, we awarded more than $800,000 in tuition assistance. For a complete list of scholarships, visit www.pomonacatholic.org. If you would like to establish a scholarship "in honor of" or "in memory of" a loved one, contact the Development Office at 909.623.5297 x13.

All Gifts to Pomona Catholic are tax-deductible. PC is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Tax ID Number 95-1759179.

Other ways to help: 1) Promote Pomona Catholic School to your family, neighbors, parishioners, and co-workers. 2) Pray for the needs of our school.
