– The Layers of , Core Humanities Class June 5 – June 20, 2016, 6 credits (Summer 2016)

The Country: You will reside in Rome, Italy, a city of art and architecture, culture, fashion, and so much more. Rome’s picturesque spaces, cuisine and culture are ideal for exploring Italian aesthetics and history.

The Experience: To prepare students for a rich study-abroad experience, coursework begins in America with sessions on basic Italian phrases and customs, how to be a traveler rather than a tourist, literary works inspired by Rome, and major periods and styles of Roman history and art. In June, students travel to the Villa Maria on Rome’s Janiculum Hill, which will serve as home base for explorations of the layers of the “Eternal City” as well as Ostia and (optional excursions to) Pompeii and Florence. Collaborating with students and faculty from the University of Texas El-Paso and the University of Central Oklahoma, students will learn from on-site presentations about art, history, literature, and philosophy at the Forum, the Pantheon, the Coliseum, St. Peter’s, the Piazza Navona, and other world-historical sites. Students will expand their horizons and enrich their understanding of Western civilization, all while fulfilling six hours of core courses and the Kirkwood diversity requirement.
