That survey clearly showed that 71 FINANCIAL AFFAIRS in concurrence. percent of the people of the State of Maine wanted this as an option at the end of their lives. They wanted to be able to make a choice when their illness, when their sickness, had reached a Divided Report point where it had reached for a number of the people who have Majority Report of the Committee on JUDICIARY reporting contacted me in the past 18 months. -

Crane Meadows NWR was established in 1992 for'... the conservation of the wetlands of the Nation...' under the Emergency'Wetland Resources Act of 1986. The Service owns and manages approximately 1,800 acres of 13,540 acres proposed for acquisition in Morrison County, Minnesota. The unique wetland complex contains rare and declining habitat types, important archaeological resources, a diversity of local and migratory species, and an abundance of recreational opportunities. The CCP will guide management of the Refuge for the next 15 years and will help the Refuge meet its purpose and contribute to the mission of the National V/ildlife Refuge System. The CCP will provide both broad and specific guidance on various issues; describe the Refuge's vision, goals, and measurable objectives; and list strategies for reaching the objectives. We invite you to review and comment on the Draft CCP and EA. By sharing your thoughts, you can help ensure that the final CCP is both visionary and practical. V/e will host an open house where you will be able to ask questions and voice concerns and suggestions. Sounding Sentimental: American Popular Song From Nineteenth-Century Ballads to 1970s Soft Rock Emily Margot Gale Vancouver, BC Bachelor of Music, University of Ottawa, 2005 Master of Arts, Music Theory, University of Western Ontario, 2007 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music University of Virginia May, 2014 © Copyright by Emily Margot Gale All Rights Reserved May 2014 For Ma with love iv ABSTRACT My dissertation examines the relationship between American popular song and “sentimentality.” While eighteenth-century discussions of sentimentality took it as a positive attribute in which feelings, “refined or elevated,” motivated the actions or dispositions of people, later texts often describe it pejoratively, as an “indulgence in superficial emotion.” This has led an entire corpus of nineteenth- and twentieth-century cultural production to be bracketed as “schmaltz” and derided as irrelevant by the academy. Their critics notwithstanding, sentimental songs have remained at the forefront of popular music production in the United States, where, as my project demonstrates, they have provided some of the country’s most visible and challenging constructions of race, class, gender, sexuality, nationality, and morality. My project recovers the centrality of sentimentalism to American popular music and culture and rethinks our understandings of the relationships between music and the public sphere. In doing so, I add the dimension of sound to the extant discourse of sentimentalism, explore a longer history of popular music in the United States than is typical of most narratives within popular music studies, and offer a critical examination of music that—though wildly successful in its own day—has been all but ignored by scholars. -

Two service station owners whose businesses will be closed by the celebration will be paid about .., each for every night the street is closed. • Hoffmann said about 30 applications for activities and concessions have been received by the task force thus far, and "We expect that there will be at least 20 concessions. FLOYD 0O0 Printed by Sulphur Times-Democrat 2 FLATT XATIOXAL PARK—SULPHUR, OKLAHOMA Piatt National Park PJatt National Park, in Southern Oklahoma., is known primarily be cause of its curative springs. Sulphur springs predominate, but there are bromide and other waters of medicinal value, besides several non- mineral in character. The lands forming the greater portion of this park were formerly part of the holdings of the Chickaslia Nation, and were purchased from the Indians under an agreement ratified by the Act of Congress approved July 1, 1902. Under the act of Congress approved 21, 1901, 21G.G5 acres were added to the reservation, which was known as the Sulphur Springs Reservation. On June 29, 1900, the name of the reservation •was changed to Piatt National Park in honor of Orville Hitchcock Piatt, who for twenty-six years was a Senator from Connecticut and who for many years served as a member of the Committee on Indian Affairs. 'The total area of the park is now SIS.22 acres. The park is hilly, well-wooded, traversed by a picturesque stream containing a number of waterfalls or cascades. -

Issue 106 MARCH 9TH, 2020 This issue's cover: conductor Leopold Stokowski (1882 - 1977). One of the greatest conductors of all time, Stokowski helmed the Philadelphia Orchestra, the NBC Symphony Orchestra and other top musical organizations and appeared on many famous RCA "Living Stereo" recordings, among others. Streaming audio is wonderful. (Well, except for artists getting stiffed – not so nice.) We can just think of a song and a few mouse clicks later, hear it. That said, so many of us like physical media. Whether we prefer the sound of vinyl, have been buying CDs since the 1980s or just like to collect stuff (guilty as charged), there’s a certain satisfaction with owning the music and knowing it’s yours, not for rent on some server that might as well be in Andromeda. I saw an interesting parallel at last year’s PHOTOPLUS show. Photographic film is becoming more popular. Yep, that stuff that photographers load into their cameras in the dark. One of the booths, Freestyle Photo and Imaging Supplies, even had a sign that said, “Rediscover the World of Analog Photography.” It got my attention. Freestyle’s Patrick DelliBovi informed me that these days, they’re selling a lot of film, photographic paper and even new Polaroid SX-70 cameras! He told me that among other things, their customers want tangible and physical photos, not an ephemeral digital file on a computer or cloud. Sound familiar? “Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago. -
