This research is about imagery found in the lyrics of the Westlife Selected Songs from Love Album The purpose of this study is to find out what type of image often arises from the images contained in the Westlife’s Songs.In collecting data, researchers used recording/recording techniques in conducting this research the researcher first listens and reads the song lyrics from the album Love.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis gambar apa yang sering muncul dari gambar-gambar yang terkandung dalam Lagu-lagu Westlife.Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan teknik perekaman atau perekaman dalam melakukan penelitian ini peneliti pertama kali mendengarkan dan membaca lirik lagu dari album Love.

1.1 Background of Study

Literature, most generically, is anybody of written works. More restrictively, literature refers to writing considered to be an art form or any single writing deemed to have artistic or intellectual value, often due to deploying language in ways that differ from ordinary usage.

According to Owen (2006:1), describes the language definition language can be defined as a socially shared Those combinations of symbols and rule governed Those combinations of symbols (language can be defined as a socially acceptable code or conventional system for delivering concepts through the use of symbols and combinations of the desired symbols are governed by the provisions).

Literature, a body of written works. Literature may be classified according to a variety of systems, including language, national origin, historical period, genre, and subject matter. According to (Hirsch 1978:34) “Let me,then,end with my own stipulative definition of literature. Literature includes any text worthy to be taught to students by teacher of literature,when these texts are not being taught to students in other departments of a school or university

Song also contains critic to our government‟s wisdom, welfare, miserable, etc. A lyric which is written by author, has destination that will be delivered to audience. Song contains of word system, good diction, figurative language, so it will makesit is not just in their ears but heart also can feel it. Song is created by authors based on their life experiences, tell about someone or another. Almost of people hear song be able toward their interest that contains simple lyric, easy to understand and remember because they are in growing faze. They learn by singing song that they like. Teenagers prefer listen love song than other because almost of them feel in love in this age. Mean while old people usually like slow song because their hearing are weak. Song is more interesting if is sung by singer who has certain voice character beside sing lyric also interesting. Singers give special voice that makes it touch audience‟s feeling. Music arrangement also influences music power too.

Language is a network of relationship. As human being, people really need language to do interaction and communication to each other. As Clark (1997:3) said “language stands at the centre of human affairs, from the most prosaic to the most profound”. It means that language is very important in life and is the power of expressing tought and feelings. Language is also the expression of ideas by writing or any other instrumentality. Universitas Sumatera Utara are embodied. Music and literarture have ancient origins and and do not only lie at the heart of religious and cultural practices and narratives,but also provide widely popular leisure activities in everyday life (Diana Omigie, 2015).

We can attempt to define its essential character by specifying a whole range of design features : its arbitrariness and duality, the fact that it is context-independent, operates across different media (speech and writing ) and at different levels of organization (sounds, words, sentences), and so on. Widdowson (1996 :15). Linguistics has important roles to study language that include sounds, the arrangement of words, and meaning. Linguistics is concerned with identifying the meaningful elements of specific languages.

Linguistics also deals with the meanings expressed by modulations of a speaker‟s voice and the processes by which hearers and readers relate new information to the information they already have. Linguistics is essentially the study of how language mean, there are four branches of linguistics study; they are Phonology,Morphology, Syntax, and Semantics. In this paper,

I focus on Semantics. Kreidlerin (1998:3) says,“Semantics is the systematic study of meaning, and linguistic semantics is the study of how languages organize and express meanings.”

Figurative meaning generally used by the poet to created some special effect and to make it more imaginative. Moreover, figurative language is not used only in the poetry. This can be applied in the song lyric too.

A song lyric, as a part of literary work which is uses literary language and ambiguously words. “As Perrine said in his book “Literature: Structure, Sound, and Universitas Sumatera

Utara Sense”(1997:6),literature is kind of art, usually written, that offers pleasure and illumination.Later on, most of lyrics use figurative and ambiguous languageto simulate a certain image. It affects the language beauty of work in both oral and written. It is a poet that pronounced with rhyme, tone, bars, and melody accompanied by music.

We use Language in order to communicate one with other, to express our personal reaction to situations, to stimulate response in someone else, and for the sake of thinking something out.Language can be seen as distincitive because of its intricate association with the human mind and with human society. It is related to both cognition and communication, it is both abstract knowledge and actual behavior. Generally, every writer has plenty of imagination stated in the lyrics. The message containsmany ideas, such as social, satire, motivation, education, till a romantic. Literature is also one of media to show some of the meaning, one of them is moral value that presented by author. By the songs the author tries to teach and deliver good moral for the people. People have to improve and maintain their good moral. Morality is common word to say, but it is very

Universitas Sumatera Utara difficult to imply in human’s daily life. Morality is something that must be owned by human because without morality human will not br respected by other people. It will be easy for people to socialize with other and they will be accepted in the community. Moral values can not only be obtained by discussion in formal situation or books, but also people can use songs to deliverthe moral message of the songs.

The data source of this research is Jason Mraz's album entitled " We Sing We Dance We Steal

Thigns ". " which consists of 10 songs. The technique used in data collection is documentary analysis techniques. The technique used to analyze the data is by taking a number of steps, including (1) reading and listening to 5 Jason Mraz song lyrics in the album Know, (2) understanding the contents of Jason Mraz song Lyrics, and (3) analyzing moral values and the benefits of these moral values in the life described in Jason Mraz's song lyrics. The results of the study show that Jason Mraz's song lyrics are interesting songs to study. Jason Mraz's song concerns the experience of human life which is reflected in trust, love and affection, loyalty, sincerity, gratitude, fortitude, humility, peace of mind, brotherhood, and respect for others. Moral values that are beneficial in human life described in Jason Mraz's song lyrics are moral values of loyalty. Humans without loyalty are humans who have no purpose.

In the music industry, there are many bands or soloists. But there was onephenomenal soloist with famous works is Jason Mraz. He is a singer who came from American with values that are meaningful about the song that aim to inspire and entertain people and send a message and hope to theworld. Jason Mraz is an American singer, songwriter known for his hit singles like The

Remedy (I Won’t Worry), I Won’t Give Up and Make It Mine. Furthermore, he has two

Grammy awards and many others nomination for his contribution in music.

The scope of the study is focused on the meaning of Sincerity and Betrayal in Westlife’s love album

1.5 Significance of the Study

The significance of this description is to increase the literary understanding in terms of literary works as poetry, lyric and the song. Practically, it has significance for the readers to understand what is the meaning of the album.

1.6 Method of the Study

The writer uses the qualitative method in doing this paper. The primary data is in the lyric of the songs of Westlife’s love Album and the secondary of data sources from internet. The writer collects some data to support the description, finding the related data to the research then narrowing data of the internet research to the related element which are about theme. Having understood the meaning of the Album, the writer describes meaning of the songs and makes the conclusion.

2.1. Literature

Literature refers to compositions that tell stories,dramatize situations,espress emotions,and analyze and advocate ideas.(Henry van Dyke) says that “Literature consists of those writing which interpret the meanings of nature and life,in words of charm and power,touched with the personality of the author,in artistict forms of permanent interest”.

(McFadden 1978:56) “I should say,then,that literature is a canon which consists of those works in languange by which a community defines itself through the course of its history. It includes works primarily artistic and also those whose aesthetic qualities are only secondary. The self- defining activity of the community is conducted in the light of the works,as its members have come to read them (or concretize them)”.

2.1.1 Theory of Meaning

The term “theory of meaning” has figured,in one way or another,in a great number of philosopical disputes over the last century.Unfortunately,this term has also been used to mean a great number of different things.

Here I focus on two sorts of “theory of meaning.”The first sort of theory-a semantic theory-is a theory which assigns semantic contents to expressions of a languange.Approaches to semantics may be divided according to whether they assign propositions as the meanings of sentences and,if they do,what view they take of the nature of these propositions.

The second sort of theory-a foundational theory of meaning-is a theory which states the facts in virtue of which expressions have the semantic contents that they have.Approaches to the foundational theory of meaning may be divided into theories which do,and theories which do

Universitas Sumatera Utara not,explain the meanings of expressions of a languange used by a group in terms of the contents of the mental states of members of that group

2.1.2 Types of Meaning

Lewis was right.Even if philosophers have not consistently kept these two questions separate,there clearly is a distinction between the questions “What is the meaning of this or that symbol (for a particular person or group?)’ and I virtue of what facts about that person or group does the symbol have that meaning?’

Corresponding to these two questions are two different sorts of theory of meaning.One sort of theory of meaning-a semantic theory-is a specification of the meanings of the words and sentences of some symbol system.Semantic theories thus answer the question,’What is the meaning of this or that expression?” A district sort of theory-a foundational theory of meaning- tries to explain what about some person or group gives the symbols of their language the meanings that they have.To be sure,the shape of a correct semantic theory may place constraints on the correct foundational theory of meaning,or vice versa;but that doesn’t change the fact that semantic theories and foundational theories are simply different sorts of theories,designed to answer different questions.

To see the distinction between semantic theories and foundational theories of meaning,it may help to consider an analogous one. Imagine an antropologist specializing in table manners sent out to observe a distant tribe.One task the antropologist clearly might undertake is to simply describe the table manners of that tribe-to describe the different categories into which members of the tribe place actions at the table,and to say which sorts of actions fall into which categories.This would be analogous to the task of the philosopher of languange interested in

Universitas Sumatera Utara semantics;her job is to say what different sorts of meanings expressions of a given language have,and which expressions have which meanings.

But our anthropologist might also become interested in the nature of manners;he might wonder how,in general,one set of rules of table manners comes to be the system of etiquette governing a particular group.Since presumably the fact that a group obeys one system of etiquette rather than another is traceable to something about that group,the anthropologist might put his new questions by asking,’In virtue of what facts about a person or group does that person or group come to governed by a particular system of etiquette,rather than another?”Our anthropologist would then have embarked uponthe analogue of the construction of a foundational theory of a meaning:he would then be interested,not in which etiquette-related properties particular actions types have in a certain group,but rather the question of how action-types can,in any group,come to acquire properties of this sort.Our anthropologist might well be interested in both sorts of question about table manners;but they are ,pretty clearly,differents questions.Just so,semantic theories and foundational theories of meaning are,pretty clearly,different sorts of theories.

There are at least seven types of meaning (many linguists state their different categories of meaning), according to Geoffrey Leech (1974), those are :

1. Conceptual Meaning (logical, cognitive, or denotative content)

It refers to the dictionary meaning which indicates the concepts. In reading we can find

many different words have the same conceptual meanings. Take the word walks as an

example, the conceptual meaning or the primary dictionary meaning is to move forward

by placing one foot in front of the other. There are also a few other words that, according

to the dictionary, mean to move forward on foot, etc.

It refers to the associations that are connected to a certain word or the emotional

suggestions related to that word. The connotative meanings of a word exist together

with the denotative meanings. The connotations for the word snake include evil or

danger.

2. Social Meaning(what is communicated of the social circumstances of language use)

It refers to the usage of language in and by society which has big proportions in

determining the meaning that certain speaker has to use and wants to convery, those

factors include social class of the speaker and hearer and the degree of formality.

Only part of the social meaning of a conversation is carried by words. Take saying

hello or talking about the weather. Often such talk has little dictionary meaning. It is a

way of being friendly or polite.

3. Affective Meaning(what is communicated of the feeling and attitudes of the

speaker/writer)

It refers to the speaker’s feeling/attitude towards the content or the on going context. It is important to remember that each individual will have different affective meaning for a word. As such, only the person using a word will be aware of the particular affective meaning that they hold with the word. For example, we can discuss the word winter further. The word winter denotatively refers to a time period during which either the northern or southern hemisphere is furthest away from the sun. Different use of stress and intonation also provides a striking contrast in the feelings and attitudes communicated through an utterance.

In the philosophy of languange,the nature of meaning,its definition,elements,and types,was discussed by philosophers Aristotle,Augustine and Aquinas.According to them

“meaning is a relationship between two sorts of things:signs and the kinds of the things they mean (intend,express or signify)”. One term in the relationship of meaning necessarily causes something else to come to the mind. In on other words:” a sign is defined as an entity that indicates another entity to some agent for some purpose. As Augustine states, a sign is

“something that shows itself to the senses and something other than itself to the mind”.

Westlife Biography

Formed in Dublin in 1998, Westlife followed in the tradition of European boy bands like Take That andBoyzone. The group performed ballads and club-worthy pop songs for a devoted European audience, becoming one of the continent's most successful bands in the process. Although they never managed to find American success, Westlife released six platinum- selling records in the U.K. and eventually sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, a feat that helped them eclipse the popularity of pop titans likeBoyzone, whose lead singer had managed the band during its infancy.

Vocalists Shane Filan, Kian Egan, and Mark Feehily first performed together in another pop group, IOYOU, and experienced their first brush with success when Simon

Cowell considered signing them to BMG. The group's other singers didn't make the cut,
