INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of Study Literature, most generically, is anybody of written works. More restrictively, literature refers to writing considered to be an art form or any single writing deemed to have artistic or intellectual value, often due to deploying language in ways that differ from ordinary usage. According to Owen (2006:1), describes the language definition language can be defined as a socially shared Those combinations of symbols and rule governed Those combinations of symbols (language can be defined as a socially acceptable code or conventional system for delivering concepts through the use of symbols and combinations of the desired symbols are governed by the provisions). Literature, a body of written works. The name has traditionally been applied to those imaginative works of poetry and prose distinguished by the intentions of their authors and the perceived aesthetic excellence of their execution. Literature may be classified according to a variety of systems, including language, national origin, historical period, genre, and subject matter. According to (Hirsch 1978:34) “Let me,then, end with my own stipulative definition of literature. Literature includes any text worthy to be taught to students by teacher of literature, when these texts are not being taught to students in other departments of a school or university 1 1 Universitas Sumatera Utara Song lyrics is included of kind of literature because lyric is language creation (poem) which contains of personal feeling expression. Song lyric is like poem but it is served in song form. It attributes are imaginative but nowadays. Song also contains critic to our government‟s wisdom, welfare, miserable, etc. A lyric which is written by author, has destination that will be delivered to audience. Song contains of word system, good diction, figurative language, so it will makesit is not just in their ears but heart also can feel it. Song is created by authors based on their life experiences, tell about someone or another. Almost of people hear song be able toward their interest that contains simple lyric, easy to understand and remember because they are in growing faze. They learn by singing song that they like. Teenagers prefer listen love song than other because almost of them feel in love in this age. Mean while old people usually like slow song because their hearing are weak. Song is more interesting if is sung by singer who has certain voice character beside sing lyric also interesting. Singers give special voice that makes it touch audience‟s feeling. Music arrangement also influences music power too. Language is a network of relationship. As human being, people really need language to do interaction and communication to each other. As Clark (1997:3) said “language stands at the centre of human affairs, from the most prosaic to the most profound”. It means that language is very important in life and is the power of expressing tought and feelings. Language is also the expression of ideas by writing or any other instrumentality. Literature is a uniquely human activity, born of man’s timeless desire to understand, express, and finally share experiences. According to Pickering, James H & Hoeper, Jeffrey D (1981.01307) Literary works are works, other than audiovisual works, expressed in words, numbers, or other verbal or numerical symbols or indicia, regardless of the nature of the material objects, such as books, periodicals, manuscripts, phono records, film, tapes, disks, or cards, in which they 2 Universitas Sumatera Utara are embodied. Music and literarture have ancient origins and and do not only lie at the heart of religious and cultural practices and narratives, but also provide widely popular leisure activities in everyday life (Diana Omigie, 2015). We use Language in order to communicate one with other, to express our personal

  • CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Language
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Language is a system of conventional spoken, manual, or written symbols by means of which human beings, as members of social groups and participants in its culture, express themselves. For social interaction, a communication called language is needed. In everyday communication the tool that are often used to communicate are languages, both written and spoken languages. Language as a means of communication certainly has functions. One of the functions of language is to convey information. Language can be conveyed through spoken and written. To convey information, especially through written, it must be conveyed by considering several elements that can make the writing meaningful and understandable. Functional grammar view language as a resource for making meaning. These grammars attempt to describe language in actual use and focus on text and their context.1 1 Linda Gerot and Peter Wignell, Making Sense of Functional Grammar (1995), (Edited by Berti Nurul Khajati, 2013), p. 5. 1 2 According to Butt, there are three broad functions of language that are central to the way grammar works in the language system. 2 It is called metafunctions. They are experiential or ideational meanings; which focus on the social function of language, to interact with other people, interpersonal meanings; focusing on how language is used, and textual meanings; which focus on how message is organized. The textual metafunction, is described by Halliday as the 'relevance' or the 'enabling' metafunction. This is the level of organization of the clause which enables the clause to be packaged in ways which make it effective given its purpose and its context.
