Long-time FIU benefactor Dr. Herbert Wertheim is one of FIU’s most enthusiastic supporters. Jonathan M. Tisch is chairman of Loews Hotels as well as Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors and a A high school dropout who later joined the U.S. Navy, he overcame dyslexia and poverty as a South member of the Office of the President of Loews Corporation, its parent company. FIU Medallion Agustin R. Arellano, Sr. Cal Kovens Distinguished Community Service Award

Agustin R. Arellano, Sr. is the founding principal and president of Arellano Construction. A Havana native, Arellano came to the United States in 1960. He and his family settled in Texas. After graduating with a degree in industrial engineering in 1968 from Texas A&M University, he spent the next six years living and working in Central America, Japan and Miami as an employee of Lang Engineering Corp. In 1974 he decided to stay in South Florida and founded Arellano Construction. He oversees all facets of the business, including the construction and renovation of healthcare, higher education and life science facilities throughout the southeastern United States. With more than 40 years of construction industry experience, he has put together a specialized project portfolio that consists of more than $1.5 billion in completed projects. An active member of our community, Arellano is a member of the Orange Bowl Committee. He formerly served as a director of the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Mercy Hospital Foundation, South Florida Hospital Association and Riviera Country Club. He is founder and a past president of the Miami Rowing Club and a former trustee of Ransom Everglades School. A strong supporter of FIU, Arellano is a director of the FIU Foundation Board and a member of the Panther Club.
