NINE SEEK FIRST GRADE I IN GAMELY SI SAGE A DECISIVE Monday=s Gamely S. is the lone Grade I event on the national WHITTINGHAM WINNER racing calendar over Memorial Day weekend, and the Santa Anita turf fixture features nine distaffers seeking their first win at the highest level. No entrant brings sharper form to the table than Hronis Racing=s Nancy From Nairobi (GB) ( {GB}), winner of her last three starts, including a score in the one-mile GII Royal Heroine S. over the Arcadia turf May 5. Nancy From Nairobi began her career in England campaigning for trainer Michael Channon and privately purchased and transferred to the John Sadler barn following a victory at Newmarket last August. The bay took three starts to hit her best stride in America, but has since put forth a series of impressive efforts over the local lawn. In the Royal Heroine, the 5-year-old defeated three of her Gamely rivals, including stablemate and seventh-place finisher Elektrum (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}). Cont. p5

Confronted by Bal a Bali on the final turn, the bay shook loose from that rival turning for home and kicked clear to notch a decisive score. Patentar (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}) made up good ground late to complete the exacta in his initial North American graded stakes try. Si Sage began his career in native France, and has been a stalwart on the Southern California circuit ever since being privately purchased in the spring of 2013. 2014 Canadian Horse of the Year Lexie Lou returned to the winner=s circle for the first time in over a year and a half Sunday, capturing Woodbine=s GII Nassau S. in rallying fashion. Winner of the 2014 Queen=s Plate over male contemporaries, the bay made just one start in 2015 due to a series of issues and finally put together a steady string of races leading up to Sunday=s triumph. Largely dismissed on the tote board as French import Stormy Victoria (Fr) (Stormy River {Fr}) took the bulk of the money, Lexie Lou broke alertly and took back as Moon Rainbow (Smart Lexie Lou | Woodbine Entertainment Strike) sped through fractions of :23.07 and :45.26 with Mississippi Delta closely in tow. Sent up three wide turning for home as Mississippi Delta moved to the front, Lexie Lou closed stoutly down the center of the strip to collar that rival in deep stretch and win going away in a snappy final clocking. Strut the Course split horses and edged past the stubborn pacesetter late to complete the trifecta. Stormy Victoria was away slowly and made mild headway to report home fifth. Lexie Lou, who won the as a precursor to her tally in the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, demonstrated proficiency over the turf in winning Santa Anita=s GIII Autumn Miss S. later that term and closed out her sophomore season with a runner-up finish behind 2014 Horse of the Year (Lucky Pulpit) in the GI . The bay was a runner-up in the GII La Canada S. on dirt in January 2015, before being sidelined for nearly a year. Third after a wide run in her return to action in a one-mile optional claimer at Tampa Bay Jan. 13, the now-5-year-old failed to factor when sixth behind and stablemate Tepin (Bernstein) in that venue=s GIII Endeavor S. Feb. 13. Lexie Lou was last seen setting the pace and leveling off to finish third in a 1 1/16-mile optional claimer over the all-weather track at Woodbine Apr. 30, a race that jockey Patrick Husbands said set her up for marked improvement Sunday afternoon. AShe=s a funny filly,@ said Husbands. AYou=ve got to play with her mind. You=ve got to let her do what she wants to do. The business that started 21 years ago with just two horses is now nearing 100 on its books, patronising trainers across the country, including Richard Hannon, Richard Fahey, Keith Dalgleish, David O'Meara, Ben Haslam and Nicky Henderson. Bigger names have come in recent years, but the fact that Middleham Park Racing--named after the Yorkshire training centre where those first horses were based--has become such a thriving concern owes much to one of its initial pair in training, China Castle (GB) (Sayf El ), who held the record for the number of all-weather wins until being headed recently by Stand Guard (GB) and La Estrella (Ire). "I had the odd share in horses here and there and then I decided I should set up my own syndicate as various friends were interested in getting involved. We started with Pat Haslam and China Castle was our first winner. He was a legend for us. He more than did his bit and won 25 times on the all-weather. My email address still includes China Castle to this day," explains Palin, who has been joined in the business by his son, Tom.
