Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) MATTOS ~ MASSEI _ CHASSIDUS ON THE PARSHA + Dvar Torah – Mattos Keep Your Word The Torah states (30:3), “If a man takes a vow or swears an oath to G -d to establish a prohibition upon himself, he shall not violate his word; he shall fulfill whatever comes out of his mouth.” In relation to this passuk , the Midrash quotes from Tehillim (144:4), “Our days are like a fleeting shadow.” What is the connection? This can be explained, says Rav Levi Yitzchok, according to a Gemara ( Nedarim 10b), which states, “It is forbidden to say, ‘ Lashem korban , for G-d − an offering.’ Instead a person must say, ‘ Korban Lashem , an offering for G -d.’ Why? Because he may die before he says the word korban , and then he will have said the holy Name in vain.” In this light, we can understand the Midrash. The Torah states that a person makes “a vow to G-d.” This i s the exact language that must be used, mentioning the vow first. Why? Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) BO _ CHASSIDUS ON THE PARSHA + Dvar Torah As the Jewish people were preparing to leave Egypt, Moshe pointed out to them, “This day you are leaving in the month of springtime ( aviv ).” His intention was to show them the kindness of Hashem in that He chose for them a time of temperate weather to set out on their journey. These words, Rav Levi Yitzchok comments, also have a deeper meaning. The Zohar explains that the different ways words are arranged according to the aleph -bais symbolize the different aspects of divine providence. A series of words sometimes appears in alphabetical order, the first starting with an aleph , the second with a bais , and so forth. This arrangement symbolizes divine mercy. Sometimes, a series will appear in reverse alphabetical order, called tashrak , the first starting with a tav , the second with a shin , and so forth. This symbolizes strict justice. There is a dispute in the Gemora (Rosh HaShana 10b) regarding when the future Redemption will take place. One opinion is that it will take place in Nissan . The other is that it will take place in Tishrei . According to the Zohar , we can say that the question is whether the Jewish people will be redeemed because they will have earned it or whether the Redemption will be une arned, an act of divine mercy.

    Moreinu Horav Nosson Eliyahu Gertzulin zt”l 5679/1919 — 5765/2005 At Yeshiva Torah Vodaath from 1931 — 2005 Horav Nosson Eliyahu Gertzulin was born in 1919 in the Belarusian Capitol city of Minsk but his family immigrated to the United States when he was a young child, settling in Philadelphia. Rav Gertzulin’s father would awaken him at 3:00 a.m., so that they could learn together for several hours, and again in the evenings they would learn once again, the only child there at that time. One day, a member of the shul asked Rav Gertzulin’s father: “Why are you wasting your time learning with your son? This is America! The young people don’t learn here!” Rav Gertzulin’s father was so shaken by this that he decided to send him away to yeshiva. So in 1931, before he even reached his bar mitzvah, Rav Gertzulin arrived in New York to attend Yeshiva Torah Vodaas, where he learned under Horav Moshe Dovber Rivkin zt”l and Horav Shlomo Heiman zt”l. Rav Gertzulin was the only talmid to receive both the coveted Yoreh Yoreh and Yadin Yadin semicha from Rav Heiman. Rav Gertzulin would stay up regularly until 3:00 a.m. bent over a Gemara or Shulchan Aruch, both of which he gained an extraordinary mastery over. And he applied his enormous thirst for knowledge which engendered his traveling away from home to the diligence with which he approached his Torah learning. This produced a formidable mix of Torah knowledge and breadth, together with the refinement and nobility of spirit which accompanied Rav Gertzulin.

Suddenly, his front door burst open and two Jews ran in, breathlessly. “Mr. Bunim, quick,” one of the men said, his hands shaking, “there is no time to waste. Rav Shlomo Heiman received a telegram from the roshei yeshivah who escaped to Vilna. We have to rescue a thousand rabbis and their students from the Mirrer, Slabodka, Lubliner, Lubavitch, and other yeshivos or the Russians will kill them. We must help these Jews now. We have to raise $50,000 - today! They have to get permits, secure visas and book passage.” No one spoke as the young rabbi gulped for air. “Please. We still have time. We can get them out - to Japan. But the Russians will not let them go from Vilna to Vladivostok without the cash. G-d forbid, if we do not send them the money immediately, they will never escape!” The second man gestured to the taxi waiting at the curb. “Rav Shlomo Heiman, Rav Moshe Feinstein, and Rav Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz sent us to you.     Moreinu Horav Shlomo Heiman zt”l 5652/1892 – 5705/1945 With Torah Vodaath from 1935-1945 Rav Shlomo Heiman zt”l was born in Poritz, a town in the district of Minsk, Belarus, during the late 1870’s, to his father, Rav Michel. Little is known about his youth, but at a young age, he was amongst the elite talmidim to join the Yeshiva of Rav Baruch Ber Lebowitz zt”l in Halusk. Rav Shlomo was chosen by Rav Baruch Ber to help review the shiur before it was delivered to the other talmidim. In a letter written to Rav Shlomo after he left to America, Rav Baruch Ber writes, “All the birth pangs that my mother suffered during my birth were worthwhile in order that I should be able to establish a talmid of your caliber.” During the First World War, Rav Shlomo married Rebbetzin Chaya Feiga Rudensky. Immediately after his marriage, he served as a Magid Shiur in Kremenchug, but was forced to flee due to the raging battles in the area. When he arrived in Smilowitz, he acquiesced to the request of the Chafetz Chaim that he teach a group of talmidim stationed there. In 1923, he was invited by Rav Elchonon Wasserman to say shiurim in Baranowitz. In the summer of 1927, Rav Chaim Ozer Grozensky, the Rav of Vilna, appointed him Rosh Yeshiva of the famed Rameilis Yeshiva in Vilna. During Rav Shlomo’s tenure in Vilna, he developed a close relationship with the Rav.
