Village Way - Past Present and Future Revisiting our vision The vision of Yemin Orde Village has always been to serve as a microcosm of an upright and resilient society, guiding youth from a life of survival to a life of worthiness. Backed by Friends of Yemin Orde, it sought to fulfill the prophetic vision of a Jewish State that is guided by compassionate justice, where no child is left behind. The Village Way initiative was established in order to propagate this vision where needed. The Village Way heralds a renaissance in education, a grassroots movement of social and spiritual development. ImpactIsrael A quarter of a century after the establishment of FYO, our new banner marks a most relevant evolvement of this vision. This development is totally attuned to the existential juncture in which the Jewish world now stands. Past and Present From its earliest days, Judaism has always been a grand-scale educational marathon – the transmission of knowledge, values and traditions from generation to generation. The realities of exile have further placed education at the heart of Jewish life - in the family circle, the Yeshivot and engaged congregations. In all cases, upholding faith and culture was reliant on the quality and centrality of education in the lives of our people. Indeed, the Yeshiva system continues to maintain that very strictly, following an educational methodology which was initiated 200 years ago by Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin. At the same time, elsewhere in our civil society, there is much talk about the importance of education, but in fact we see a constant degradation in its public status and increasing fragmentation in its implementation.

Sat 21 July 2018 – 9 Av 5778 B”H Dr Maurice M. Mizrahi Congregation Adat Reyim Discussion for Tish’a b’Av The Jewish view of tolerance and its limits Tish'a B'Av Saddest day on Jewish calendar. History full of catastrophic events that befell Jews on Tish'a B'Av (accidentally or intentionally): -From Mishnah [Ta'anit 4:6]: -The spies Moses sent to scout the Promised Land brought back a largely negative report which demoralized the Israelites, -Both Temples destroyed (586 BCE and 70 CE), -The Bar Kochba revolt against Rome failed in 135 CE when he was killed and the city of Betar was destroyed, and -Jerusalem was razed a year later, and the Exile began. -Since then… -In 1095, the Pope began the Crusades. On the way to the Land of Israel, the Crusaders slaughtered 30-50% of the Jews of Europe. -In 1242, 24 cartloads of handwritten Talmuds burned in Paris -In 1290, Jews expelled from England -In 1306, Jews expelled from France -In 1492, Jews expelled from Spain, including my own ancestors -In 1626, the false messiah Shabtai Tzvi was born. His apostasy he dashed the hopes of millions of Jews (one-third of the total) and severely disrupted their lives. -In 1914, World War I began: -It led to World War II and the death of 6 million Jews in the Holocaust. -It facilitated the Communist Revolution, spelling 70 years of darkness for Soviet Jews. -In 1941, Nazis ordered the Final Solution: The Holocaust. Why persecute the Jews? These catastrophes happened to us because of intolerance.

  • Daat Torah (PDF)
Daat Torah Rabbi Alfred Cohen Daat Torah is a concept of supreme importance whose specific parameters remain elusive. Loosely explained, it refers to an ideology which teaches that the advice given by great Torah scholars must be followed by Jews committed to Torah observance, inasmuch as these opinions are imbued with Torah insights.1 Although the term Daat Torah is frequently invoked to buttress a given opinion or position, it is difficult to find agreement on what is actually included in the phrase. And although quite a few articles have been written about it, both pro and con, many appear to be remarkably lacking in objectivity and lax in their approach to the truth. Often they are based on secondary source and feature inflamma- tory language or an unflatttering tone; they are polemics rather than scholarship, with faulty conclusions arising from failure to check into what really was said or written by the great sages of earlier generations.2 1. Among those who have tackled the topic, see Lawrence Kaplan ("Daas Torah: A Modern Conception of Rabbinic Authority", pp. 1-60), in Rabbinic Authority and Personal Autonomy, published by Jason Aronson, Inc., as part of the Orthodox Forum series which also cites numerous other sources in its footnotes; Rabbi Berel Wein, writing in the Jewish Observer, October 1994; Rabbi Avi Shafran, writing in the Jewish Observer, Dec. 1986, p.12; Jewish Observer, December 1977; Techumin VIII and XI. 2. As an example of the opinion that there either is no such thing now as Daat Torah which Jews committed to Torah are obliged to heed or, even if there is, that it has a very limited authority, see the long essay by Lawrence Kaplan in Rabbinic Authority and Personal Autonomy, cited in the previous footnote.

Page 10 PAGE 2 MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH YESHIVA Sefer Shemos is the story of the emergence of Klal Yisrael from a small tribe of the progeny of Yaakov, to a thriving nation with millions of descendants, who accepted upon themselves the yoke of Torah. It is the story of a nation that went out to a desert and sowed the seeds of the future – a future that thrives to this very day. More than sixty years ago, my grandfather Rav Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt”l, charged my father and mother with the formidable task, “Go to the desert and plant the seeds of Torah.” What started as a fledgling school with six or seven boys, flourished more than a hundred fold. With institutions of tefilah, and higher Torah learning, all the outgrowth of that initial foray into the desert, my father’s impact is not only eternal but ever-expanding. This year’s dinner will mark both the commemoration of those accomplishments and a commitment to the renewal, refurbishment and expansion of the Torah facility he built brick by brick in 1964. Whether you are a student, an alumnus, a parent or community member, my father’s vision touched your life, and I hope that you will join us in honoring his.
