EUROCHANNEL GUIDE AUGUST 2019 5 3 Must-See Detective European TV Series Celebrating the premiere of the action Czech series, The Fury, about a police detective sent to the country’s borderlands to investigate a cold case as a punishment for his violent reactions, Eurochannel has selected three European action series nobody should miss!

The Missing One of the most riveting series produced in the UK in recent years, The Missing is an anthology drama created for the BBC. The first eight-part series focuses on the search for a missing boy in France and starred Tchéky Karyo as Julien Baptiste, the French detective who leads the case, with James Nesbitt and Frances O’Connor as the boy’s parents.

The second series follows detective Baptist investigating the case of a missing girl in Germany. In this latest case, the police tell Sam and Gemma Webster, whose daughter Alice went missing in 2003, that she has reappeared. Alice claims she had been held captive with Sophie Giroux, a French girl who disappeared during the same time. Retired French detective Julien Baptiste, who was in charge of the Giroux investigation, cannot resist becoming involved again and travels to Germany and Iraq to find answers.

Hinterland One of the biggest TV productions in Welsh history, Hinterland is a detective drama filmed in two versions, one in Welsh and one in English. The series follows DCI Tom Mathias as he arrives in Aberystwyth after 10 years at the London Met. He is a brilliant but troubled man, solving crimes in a town full of secrets as dark and destructive as his own.

Hinterland consisted of three series (seasons) in which DCI Mathias and his team investigate puzzling cases of murders and disappearances. The series became the first ever production to air on BBC in both Welsh and English.

The Bridge Created by Hans Rosenfeldt, this Scandinavian noir crime series in which a bi-national police team is put together to investigate a baffling case when the body of a woman is found in the middle of the Oresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark.

The success of the series led to different adaptations across the globe, including a British-French version, The Tunnel (2013); an American remake, starring Diane Kruger; as well as Russian and Asian adaptations.

Eurochannel premieres Wings of Steel, a historical drama based on the real life of a man who sought solace in his country after the war, but found himself battling for his honor and his family.

A story inspired by historical events, in Wings of Steel the main hero is a pilot of the British Royal Air Force. Captain Emil Malík is returning home to his family in 1945 hoping for a happy life after surviving the horrors of war piloting RAF combat aircraft.

Capturing not only the dramatic operations of Malík and his RAF colleagues, but also the coercive campaigns of the Soviet People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs, which tried to gain Malík‘s cooperation at any price, the movie’s secondary storyline is Malík’s relationship with his wife Karla, who has been affected by six years of war. As the wife of a foreign soldier, she had to spend three years in a concentration camp in Svatobořice, and her children had to be taken in by her sister.

Eurochannel invites you to discover the life of those soldiers who fought for the allied forces in WWII through the poignant experiences of Captain Malík. They found themselves in a different society when returning home.

Everybody loves a good pilot movie, maybe because deep down, we all want to have the power of flying across the skies as free as birds. Celebrating the airing ofWings of Steel, a Czech movie about a WWII RAF pilot who comes back home, we have selected three great movies about pilots you should never miss.

The Aviator Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett,The Aviator is an epic biographical drama film directed by Martin Scorsese. The movie depicts the adventurous life of Howard Hughes, an aviation pioneer and director of Hell’s Angels. The film portrays his life from 1927–1947 during which he became a successful film producer and an aviation magnate while simultaneously growing more unstable due to a severe obsessive–compulsive disorder.

The Aviator was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor in a Leading Role for DiCaprio, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Alda, and won five: Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Cate Blanchett.

Sully: Miracle on the Hudson Also a biographical movie, Sully: Miracle on the Hudson depicts the thrilling story behind one of the most famous aviation miracles. In the movie, Chesley Sullenberger has to perform an emergency landing on the Hudson River, in which all 155 passengers and crew survived with only minor injuries. The film not only depicts the anguishing moments of the event, but also the subsequent publicity and investigation.

Sully: Miracle on the Hudson stars Tom Hanks as Sullenberger, with Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney, Anna Gunn, in supporting roles.

Top Gun A classic of aviation cinema, Top Gun was the film that not only rocketed to fame Tom Cruise, but also the classic Ray Ban aviator sunglasses. In this action drama, hotshot fighter pilot Pete «Maverick» Mitchell, is sent to the school, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots. But Maverick isn’t only competing to be the top fighter pilot, he’s also fighting for the attention of his beautiful flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood.

The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for «Take My Breath Away» performed by Berlin.

To celebrate the premiere of the French drama The Counterfeiters, based on the novel of the same name by André Gide, Eurochannel has selected three must-see blockbusters that were adapted from outstanding literary works.

Gone Girl Based on the namesake novel by Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl is a quintessential film when it comes to the subject of missing persons in cinema, and presents maybe the best performances yet seen from leading actors Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. This psychological thriller follows the story of a man that sees the spotlight turned on him when he’s suspected of killing his wife after her sudden disappearance on their 5th wedding anniversary.

Pike’s performance was praised, and she received nominations for an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, for Best Actress. Additional nominations included a Golden Globe Award for Best Director for David Fincher.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Stieg Larsson and also directed by David Fincher The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo stars Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, as they lead an investigation to find out what happened to a woman from a wealthy family who disappeared 40 years prior.
