Lay Profiles of Mass and Serial Killers
Running head: LAY PROFILES OF MASS AND SERIAL KILLERS Lay Profiles of Mass and Serial Killers Kelli Terrell, Narina Nunez University of Wyoming LAY PROFILES OF MASS AND SERIAL KILLERS 2 Abstract It was hypothesized that society profiles mass murderers in a very specific way contradicting the reality of who the offenders are statistically shown to be. It was correspondingly hypothesized that a mass murderer is labeled more commonly as mentally ill and socially isolated than a serial killer, regardless of the death toll. To assess the lay profile of killers, participants were randomly assigned to either a mass killer or serial killer crime scenario. They then read a brief description of the crime and completed extended response and multiple choice questions on characteristics of the offender. Results supported the hypothesis that the lay profile of a serial killer and mass killer differ in mental health differ greatly. Additionally, the hypothesis that the lay profile differs from who killers are statistically shown to be was both supported and denied. LAY PROFILES OF MASS AND SERIAL KILLERS 3 Introduction The United States’ Congressional Research Services acknowledges that there is no generally excepted definition for what a mass shooting is but loosely defines it as “incidents occurring in relatively public places, involving four or more deaths- not including the shooter(s)- and gunmen who select victims somewhat indiscriminately” (Bjelopera, 2013). Mass shootings are defined slightly differently in Public Law 112-265 as three or more killings in a single incident (United States Congress, 2013). The disparity between these two definitions highlights both the confusion and lack of research done in regards to mass shootings. -

Cold Case Initiative 1St Report to Congress
THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S FIRST ANNUAL REPORT TO CONGRESS PURSUANT TO THE EMMETT TILL UNSOLVED CIVIL RIGHTS CRIME ACTOF 2007 APRIL 7,2009 This report is submitted pursuant to the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act of 2007, regarding the activities ofthe Department ofJustice (DOJ or the Department) under the Act. This initial report covers activities predating the Act, which was signed into law on October 7,2008, and the six months since its enactment.! 1. THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE'S EFFORTS TO INVESTIGATE AND PROSECUTE UNSOLVED CIVIL RIGHTS ERA HOMICIDES A. Overview and Background The Department of Justice fully supports the goals ofthe Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act of2007. For more than 50 years, the Department of Justice has been instrumental in bringing justice to some ofthe nation's horrific civil rights era crimes. These crimes occurred during a terrible time in our nation's history when some people viewed their fellow Americans as inferior, and as threats, based only on the color of their skin. The Department of Justice believes that racially motivated murders from the civil rights era constitute L some of the greatest blemishes upon our history. As such, the Department stands ready to lend our assistance, expertise, and resources to assist in the investigation and possible prosecution of these matters. Unfortunately, federal jurisdiction over these historic cases is limited. The Ex Post Facto Clause of the Constitution and federal statutory law have limited the Department's ability to prosecute most civil rights era cases at the federal level. For example, two ofthe most important federal statutes that can be used to prosecute racially motivated homicides, 18 U.S.C. -
The Walking Dead Chop Shop Jay Chiat Awards Category: National Strategy
HYUNDAI: THE WALKING DEAD CHOP SHOP JAY CHIAT AWARDS CATEGORY: NATIONAL STRATEGY BACKGROUND Hyundai has been on the rise with sales increasing by 89% from 2009–2012.1 The brand had built a solid reputation as a rational choice among average car shoppers. But among the highly desirable youth audience driven more by their interests and passions, reason alone wasn’t enough to get them excited about the Hyundai brand. 1Source: Experian Retail Registration 2009 – 2013; 2Source: GfK Quarterly Brand Tracking Studies 2013 Involve the Fans vs. Interrupting Them In the fall of 2013, Hyundai had product placement in the second season of The Walking Dead TV show as a way to build relevance among the show’s Gen Y audience. As the popularity of zombie culture grew, we decided to elevate the partnership with The Walking Dead to increase our relevance with this growing and passionate millennial fan base. However, this highly engaged and passionate Walking Dead youth fanbase didn’t want a brand to interrupt and commercialize their beloved show. So how do you make a rational car brand appealing to an emotionally driven fan audience? Our challenge was to involve the fans with the Hyundai brand and its cars in an authentic way that added value to their experience of The Walking Dead, and not interrupt them. OBJECTIVES & SUCCESS METRICS If we were going to involve the fans, we knew we had to motivate them to participate with us and eventually inspire them to help spread the word on behalf of the brand. OBJECTIVE #1: Engage the Fans to BUILD Demonstrate that the audience is spending more time participating with the Hyundai brand through the number of vehicles configured and built. -

Headless Outlaw’s Torso in Old Lava Tube Name of Submitter: Clark County Sheriff Bart May Location: Dubois, Idaho, U.S.A. Agency: Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho Date of Crime: 1916 Date and Type of Hit: 2018-2019 (genetic genealogy to match with general family tree); 2018-2019 (familial match with living grandson to confirm family relationship) Executive Summary: 100-year-old unidentified human remains found in an old lava tube in 1979 leads to a cold case identification effort that lasts many years. However, his head was never located, baffling the FBI and other investigators for years. They could only establish that he was of European descent, with reddish-brown hair, and was about 40-years-old at the time of death. His arms, hand, and legs were found in 1991. Over the years, investigators enlisted the help of Idaho State University and its team of forensic genetic genealogists (anthropology students and staffers). This also included experts from the Smithsonian Institution and the FBI. Last year investigators further enlisted the help of the DNA Doe Project, hoping to use DNA and ancestral analysis to identify the man. Experts from Othram, a forensic DNA analysis company, analyzed samples taken from the remains, while a forensic genealogist from the DNA Doe Project worked with her colleagues to build a ‘genealogical tree’. The man’s DNA profile was then uploaded to various genetic genealogy DNA databases for relatives. This led to the man’s living 87-year-old grandson, whose sample was taken and tested to confirm a familial relationship.
