  • White Hanbok As an Expression of Resistance in Modern Korea
[ Research Paper] EISSN 2234-0793 PISSN 1225-1151 Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles Vol. 39, No. 1 (2015) p.121~132 http://dx.doi.org/10.5850/JKSCT.2015.39.1.121 White Hanbok as an Expression of Resistance in Modern Korea † Bong-Ha Seo Dept. of Stylist, Yong-in Songdam College Received August 29, 2014; Revised September 28, 2014; Accepted October 20, 2014 Abstract All aspects of clothing, including color, are a visible form of expression that carries invisible value. The pur- pose of this work is to study the expression of resistance in the white Hanbok in modern culture, specifically after the 1980s. Koreans have traditionally revered white color and enjoyed wearing white clothes. In Korea, white represents simplicity, asceticism, sadness, resistance against corruption, and the pursuit of innocence. This paper looks at: (i) the universal and traditional values of the color white, (ii) the significance of traditional white Korean clothing, (iii) the resistance characteristics of white in traditional Korean clothes, and (iv) the aesthetic values of white Hanbok. The white Hanbok often connotes resistance when it is worn in modern Korea. It is worn in folk plays, worn by shamans as a shamanist costume, worn by protestors for anti-establi- shment movements, and worn by social activists or progressive politicians. The fact that the white Hanbok has lost its position as an everyday dress in South Korea (instead symbolizing resistance when it is worn) is an unusual phenomenon. It shows that the white Hanbok, as a type of costume, is being used as a strong means of expression, following a change in the value of traditional costumes as it take on an expressive function.

  • Hanbok Embodies Age-Old Philosophies. Article from Korea Magazine (January 2014)
Hanbok embodies age-old philosophies. Article from Korea Magazine (January 2014) There is perhaps no other artifact that captures the richness of Korean cultural heritage as well as Korean traditional attire (customary clothes), known as hanbok. While the origins of hanbok can be traced back millennia (back in time to 1000 years ago) to the ethnic origins of the Korean people, historical records in the form of murals painted during the early period of the Goguryeo Kingdom (37 B.C.–A.D. 668) show that Koreans began to wear a modern form of hanbok as early as the fourth century B.C. The basic design of hanbok comprises of (contain) two pieces, an upper and lower garment (a piece of clothing). The upper garment, the jeogori, is a bolero (a women’s short jacket that is not fastened at the front) blouse-like jacket worn by both women and men. For the lower garment, women wear a chima, a full-blown skirt that reaches past the ankles, and men wear a baji, a pair of roomy trousers. On top of these basic garments, a wide variety of (a diverse mixture of, a wide range of, a vast diversity of) accessories and outerwear can be worn for different seasons and different occasions. The traditional Hanbok is still worn on special occasions today. What is most astonishing about hanbok is the way in which its form and design have been preserved, despite a time lapse of two thousand years. While the particular style and specific length have undergone changes over the years, the basic appearance of hanbok has stayed intact.

  • Dress and Ideology During the Late 19
International Journal of Costume and Fashion Vol. 11 No. 1, Jun 2011, pp. 15-33 th Dress and Ideology during the late 19 and Dress and Ideology during th 1) the late 19th and early 20 centuries Korea, 1876~1945 early 20th centuries Korea, Min-Jung Lee+ ․ Min-Ja Kim* 1876~1945 Costume Designer, KBS Arts Vision, Seoul, Korea+ Professor, Research Institute of Human Ecology, Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea* (Received December 14, 2010; Revised January 21, 2011; Accepted February 23, 2011) Abstract The late 19th and early 20th centuries of Korea were the times when the Confucianism (性理 學) ideology was shaken heavily under the influences of modernism and capitalism by Western and Japanese military and political-economic forces. Under such circumstances, alteration of clothing was much influenced by ideologies than changes in social structure or technological advance. In this study, an ideology was defined as "the force which drives people into a particular social order". Ideologies were postulated as an ongoing process of socialization with dialectic features rather than being a static state. Comparative analyses on conflict structures and different clothing patterns symbolizing the ideolo- gies of the Ruling (支配) and the Opposition (對抗) were conducted. Investigating dresses as representa- tions of ideologies is to reconsider the notion of dichotomous confrontation between the conservatives (守 舊派) and the progressives (開化派) and a recognition of Koreans’ passively accepting modernity during the Japanese occupation. This may also have contributed to enlightening Koreans about modernization. Here are the results. First, the theoretical review found that ideologies were represented by not only symbols of discourse, but also dresses, and that dresses embodied both physical and conceptual systems presenting differences between ideologies and their natures, Second, during the late 19th century Korea, conflict between conservatives' Hanbok (韓服) and progressives' Western suits (洋服) was found.

  • Entertaining Politics: Exploring Historical Transformation of Production, Distribution, and Consumption of Political Entertainment in Korea

The study has taken two broad and interrelated research questions as its starting points: “How are political, economic, and social forms of power associated with the production, distribution, and consumption of political entertainment?” and “How has the production and dissemination of such programs changed over the past half-century and in what specific contexts?” This approach has allowed particular attention to the role of political institutions in regulating media industries; the origin of Korean political entertainment and its distinctive features; the factors and conditions influencing the transformation in formats and genres of political entertainment; and the effects of technological shifts on political entertainment.

APPAREL PRODUCTION www.eiilmuniversity.ac.in Contents Chapter:1 Origin of clothing Chapter: 2 Functions Chapter: 3 Scholarship Chapter: 4 Cultural aspects Chapter: 5 Origin and history Chapter: 6 Contemporary clothing Chapter: 7 Political issues Chapter: 8 Life cycle Chapter: 9 Gloves Chapter: 10 Fiber Plant Chapter: 11 Human Chapter: 12 Forcasting Chapter 1 Origin of Clothing There is no easy way to determine when clothing was first developed, but some information has been inferred by studying lice. The body louse specifically lives in clothing and diverged from head lice about 107,000 years ago, suggesting that clothing existed at that time. Another theory is that modern humans are the only survivors of several species of primates who may have worn clothes and that clothing may have been used as long as 650 thousand years ago. Other louse- based estimates put the introduction of clothing at around 42,000–72,000 BP. Head louse The head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis) is an obligate ectoparasite of humans. Head lice are wingless insects spending their entire life on the human scalp and feeding exclusively on human blood. Humans are the only known hosts of this specific parasite, while chimpanzees host a closely related species, Pediculus schaeffi. Other species of lice infest most orders of mammals and all orders of birds. Like all lice, head lice differ from other hematophagic ectoparasites such as the flea in that lice spend their entire life cycle on a host. Head lice cannot fly, and their short stumpy legs render them incapable of jumping, or even walking efficiently on flat surfaces.

  • Bts' Transculturality
BTS’ TRANSCULTURALITY: MUKOKUSEKI OR MUGUKJEOK? INTRODUCTION Korean pop, also known as K-pop has become a phenomenon in the music industry. What started as the Korean Wave (or Hallyu) in the 1990’s, K-pop has “entered the lexicon of global popular cultures” (Choi and Maliangkay, 2014, p. 37). With the popularity of K-pop around the world, it is important to ask: what makes K-pop transcultural? In this essay, I explore the concepts of Iwabuchi’s (2002) mukokuseki and Jung’s (2011) mugukjeok by analysing BTS’ branding, songs, and music video. In this essay, I will focus on BTS, one of the most successful K-pop groups outside of South Korea. BTS has sold-out concerts across continents and have their own fan base that calls themselves the “Army.” In 2018, BTS’s album “Love Yourself: Answer” became the number one album in the United States, according to the Billboard 200 charts. Another proof of BTS’ popularity and influence was their invitation to give a speech at the United Nations UN General Assembly, the first K-Pop group to do so. UNICEF has also made them their ambassadors and a campaign to end violence against children and young people, “Love Myself”, was named after their album. Just this March, BTS and their fan base, Army, appeared in The Simpsons, one of the longest running shows in the US and also an American pop culture icon. Like many K-Pop groups, BTS relies heavily on the visual appearance of the “idols” (as K-pop groups are called in South Korea) and their performance.
