Angeles iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Jose Amiel Palma Angeles Doctor of Philosophy Department of History December 2013 Title: As Our Might Grows Less: The Philippine-American War in Context The Philippine-American War has rarely been analyzed from the Filipino viewpoint. As a consequence, Filipino military activity is little known or misunderstood. This study aims to shed light on the Filipino side of the conflict. It does so by utilizing the Philippine Insurgent Records, which are the records of the Philippine government.     ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: WAR AND RESISTANCE: THE PHILIPPINES, 1942-1944 James Kelly Morningstar, Doctor of History, 2018 Dissertation directed by: Professor Jon T. Sumida, History Department What happened in the Philippine Islands between the surrender of Allied forces in May 1942 and MacArthur’s return in October 1944? Existing historiography is fragmentary and incomplete. Memoirs suffer from limited points of view and personal biases. No academic study has examined the Filipino resistance with a critical and interdisciplinary approach. No comprehensive narrative has yet captured the fighting by 260,000 guerrillas in 277 units across the archipelago. This dissertation begins with the political, economic, social and cultural history of Philippine guerrilla warfare. The diverse Islands connected only through kinship networks. The Americans reluctantly held the Islands against rising Japanese imperial interests and Filipino desires for independence and social justice. World War II revealed the inadequacy of MacArthur’s plans to defend the Islands. The General tepidly prepared for guerrilla operations while Filipinos spontaneously rose in armed resistance. After his departure, the chaotic mix of guerrilla groups were left on their own to battle the Japanese and each other. While guerrilla leaders vied for local power, several obtained radios to contact MacArthur and his headquarters sent submarine-delivered agents with supplies and radios that tie these groups into a united framework. MacArthur’s promise to return kept the resistance alive and dependent on the United States. The repercussions for social revolution would be fatal but the Filipinos’ shared sacrifice revitalized national consciousness and created a sense of deserved nationhood. The guerrillas played a key role in enabling MacArthur’s return.

World War II in the Philippines The Legacy of Two Nations©2016 By Bataan Legacy Historical Society Several hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the Philippines, a colony of the United States from 1898 to 1946, was attacked by the Empire of Japan. During the next four years, thou- sands of Filipino and American soldiers died. The entire Philippine nation was ravaged and its capital Ma- nila, once called the Pearl of the Orient, became the second most devastated city during World War II after Warsaw, Poland. Approximately one million civilians perished. Despite so much sacrifice and devastation, on February 20, 1946, just five months after the war ended, the First Supplemental Surplus Appropriation Rescission Act was passed by U.S. Congress which deemed the service of the Filipino soldiers as inactive, making them ineligible for benefits under the G.I. Bill of Rights. To this day, these rights have not been fully -restored and a majority have died without seeing justice. But on July 14, 2016, this mostly forgotten part of U.S. history was brought back to life when the California State Board of Education approved the inclusion of World War II in the Philippines in the revised history curriculum framework for the state. This seminal part of WWII history is now included in the Grade 11 U.S. history (Chapter 16) curriculum framework. The approval is the culmination of many years of hard work from the Filipino community with the support of different organizations across the country.

Recordemos que en virtud del Tratado de Tordesillas de 1494, los españoles no podían cos- tear el continente africano y doblar el cabo de Buena Esperanza para cru- zar el Océano Índico rumbo al este, de modo que para llegar a las islas del Poniente era necesario atravesar el Atlántico y cruzar por tierra el ist- mo mexicano hasta su costa pacífica. Allí los que deseaban ir a Filipinas tenían un solo punto de partida; el puerto de Acapulco, y un solo barco anual, el que en Filipinas se llamaba galeón de Acapulco, y en México, de Manila. La estela de los galeones trazó el único derrotero que unió Filipinas con la Nueva España desde 1593 hasta 1765, en que por primera vez se utilizó la vía del océano Indico en viajes directos desde Cádiz a Manila que acortaban considerablemente la distancia entre ambos puertos y el tiempo necesario para recorrerla.

    The Development of the Philippine Foreign Service During the Revolutionary Period and the Filipino- American War (1896-1906): A Story of Struggle from the Formation of Diplomatic Contacts to the Philippine Republic Augusto V. de Viana University of Santo Tomas The Philippine foreign service traces its origin to the Katipunan in the early 1890s. Revolutionary leaders knew that the establishment of foreign contacts would be vital to the success of the objectives of the organization as it struggles toward the attainment of independence. This was proven when the Katipunan leaders tried to secure the support of Japanese and German governments for a projected revolution against Spain. Some patriotic Filipinos in Hong Kong composed of exiles also supported the Philippine Revolution.The organization of these exiled Filipinos eventually formed the nucleus of the Philippine Central Committee, which later became known as the Hong Kong Junta after General Emilio Aguinaldo arrived there in December 1897. After Aguinaldo returned to the Philippines in May 1898, he issued a decree reorganizing his government and creating four departments, one of which was the Department of Foreign Relations, Navy, and Commerce. This formed the basis of the foundation of the present Department of Foreign Affairs. Among the roles of this office was to seek recognition from foreign countries, acquire weapons and any other needs of the Philippine government, and continue lobbying for support from other countries. It likewise assigned emissaries equivalent to today’s ambassadors and monitored foreign reactions to the developments in the Philippines. The early diplomats, such as Felipe Agoncillo who was appointed as Minister Plenipotentiary of the revolutionary government, had their share of hardships as they had to make do with meager means.

AGPALO** First of all, I would like to exp~ess my gratitude to the Chair­ man of the Sub-Committee on Constitutional Law for inviting me to present my views on the important issue of whether we should change the name PHILIPPINES to MAHARLIKA as provided in Parliamentary Bill No. 195. My position on this important question may be divided into two parts - a comment on matters I regard as secondary and a pre­ sentation of my main argument. The principal argument involves the problem of the crisis of identity, one of the major crises which confront all developing or modernizing countries. I shall discuss this in Section Ill of this paper after I have considered the secondary matters. I adopt this approach because the main argument ought to be discussed last in order to give it the emphasis it deserves. II Let me, then, begin with the secondary matters, which are embodied in the argument of the proponent of Parliamentary Bill No. 195: ( 1) That the name Philippines "merely reflects the victories of our invaders," for the Spaniards named our country "after Philip II of Spain" (Parliamentary Bill No. 195); (2) That the Philippines, named after Philip II, connotes the bad or even the worst that could be said concerning man, for Philip II was "a monster of bigotry, ambition, lust, and cruelty;" "ignoble in life as well as in death"1; and (3) That several countries of the Third World, such as the Gold Coast, Congo, and Northern Rhodesia have changed their names to Ghana, Zaire, and Zambia, respectively, in order to cast off taints of colonialism.
