EA09-008 PACCAR 10/15/2009 RESPONSE 9 03KW9 Horton - bulletin Federal Recall Information 03KW9 Supplier Kenworth Description Fan Hub Bolts Loosen Release Date 12/3/2003 Introduction FEDERAL RECALL CAMPAIGN 03KW9 - Superseded by 03KWH T300 MODELS BUILT AT THE STE. THERESE FACTORY SEPTEMBER 1, 2002 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 26, 2003 WITH CAT C7 & 3126E ENGINE & HORTON DRIVEMASTER FAN HUB - REFER TO 03KWH NOTE: This recall was originally posted on 10/15/03. This revision contains a new repair procedure with different torque values. Chassis that already had the original repair procedure performed will need a "2nd Repair" performed using this new repair procedure. The DWC and SIR online systems will have the "P" for "Performed" removed from next to the "03KW9" designator in the campaign field. Kenworth Truck Company has determined that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Kenworth T300 models with CAT C7 & 3126E engine and Horton Drivemaster fan hubs. The subject vehicles were manufactured on September 1, 2002 through September 26, 2003. A total of 1811 U.S. and 194 Canadian trucks are involved in this campaign. The chassis list (Chassis Dealer / Chassis) and a copy of the U.S. customer letter is attached. The DWC and SIR online systems indicate chassis involved in this recall with the designator of "03KW9" in the campaign field. Situation Kenworth was notified that on some vehicles the above referenced hub and fan assembly can become separated from the engine. Following an intensive investigation, it was determined that there is a reduction of bolt clamp load during normal vehicle operation. This loss of clamp load may lead to premature failure of the bolt(s), which could cause the hub assembly to separate from the engine. This sequence of events may result in equipment damage and/or personal injury. Resolution Kenworth has initiated a recall to correct this condition. • Chassis built 9/01/02 - 7/30/03: The repair will consist of removing the fan hub and removing paint from the hub mounting surface of the engine, and reinstalling the hub with new fasteners and a rigid spacer. • Chassis built 7/31/03 - 9/26/03: The repair will consist of leaving the fan hub mounted on the engine, removing the existing fasteners and replacing them with new fasteners. • "2nd Repair" Chassis: The repair will consist of leaving the fan hub mounted on the engine, removing the 2 lower fasteners and replacing them with new fasteners. It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or noncompliance has been corrected. EA09-008 PACCAR 10/15/2009 RESPONSE 9 03KWH Horton - bulletin Federal Recall Information 03KWH Supplier Horton Description Fan Hub Bolts Loosen Release Date 4/20/2004 Introduction FEDERAL RECALL CAMPAIGN 03KWH T300 MODELS BUILT AT THE STE. THERESE FACTORY SEPTEMBER 1, 2002 THROUGH FEBRUARY 18, 2004 WITH CAT C7 ENGINE & HORTON DRIVEMASTER FAN HUB This recall supersedes 03KW9 with a new repair procedure, as well as adding additional chassis to the recall. Please note, even though 03KW9 may have been performed, 03KWH still needs to be completed. Kenworth Truck Company has determined that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Kenworth T300 models with CAT C7 engine and Horton Drivemaster fan hubs. The subject vehicles were manufactured on September 1, 2002 through February 18, 2004. A total of 2578 US and 301 Canadian trucks are involved in this campaign. The chassis list and a copy of the customer letter are attached. The DWC and SIR online systems indicate chassis involved in this recall with the designator of "03KWH" in the campaign field. Situation Kenworth initiated a recall on October 10, 2003 to correct a condition where the hub and fan assembly can become separated from the engine. Kenworth received notice of further failures after the recall had been performed. Kenworth continued to investigate and notified Horton. Horton has determined that the #989183 fan hub resonates in the operating range of the Cat C7 engine in T300s. This vibration could lead to premature failure of the fan hub, either by fatigue of the fan hub material or failure of the mounting bolts. This failure may cause the hub assembly to separate from the engine resulting in equipment damage and/or personal injury. Resolution Kenworth has initiated a second recall to correct this condition. Horton has redesigned the fan hub to shift the hub's dynamic characteristics away from the operating frequencies of the engine. The recall repair will consist of replacing the existing fan hub mounting bracket and related parts in accordance with the attached Horton Repair Procedure and returning the take-off bracket to Horton. The original take-off bolts, washers, and F80-1011 Fan Hub Spacer Bar should be discarded and not reused under any situation. Order Horton Fan Hub Kit 994934 for this repair. These kits will be available from PACCAR Parts May 1, 2004. It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or noncompliance has been corrected.
