Mendocino County Sheriff’s Lt. Rusty Noe said Harding, 27, of Cleone, got into an argument with his mother and her boyfriend at around 1 a.m. Saturday in the Mill Creek Drive home in Cleone where the three lived together. “He got angry and attacked them,” Noe said. The alleged attack was reported by a neighbor who heard the three arguing and later saw one of the victims come out of the house seeking help. Noe said the boyfriend was stabbed several times and that he did not know how many times the mother was stabbed. Both were taken by air ambulance to local hospitals for treatment. “The injuries were serious but not life threatening,” Noe said. Harding was arrested at scene by sheriff’s deputies on suspi- cion of two-counts of attempted murder and booked into the Mendocino County Jail. HORSE RACING | UHS | AWARDS NIGHT BELMONT Patching up Big Brown’s Walker, Ruddick cracked front hoof receive top honors By BETH HARRIS Associated Press NEW YORK — Before Big Brown can make a run at winning the Triple Crown, his slightly cracked left front hoof needs some final work. The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner is wearing a sec- ond set of stainless steel sutures on the inside of his hoof. They’ve allowed Big Brown to gallop around Belmont Park while giving the hoof healing time. Hoof specialist Ian McKinlay said Monday he will wait until Friday to attach an acrylic and fiberglass patch to Big Brown’s hoof, the final step in the repair process ahead of Saturday’s Belmont Stakes. “This is just a slight, slight crack,” McKinlay said outside Big Brown’s barn. “We’re being extra cautious because he’s heading toward the Triple Crown.” Initially, the plan had called for McKinlay to apply the patch Monday, but he said waiting a cou- ple of extra days would allow for more natural healing to occur. “As the clock ticks, it’s gotten better and better,” he said. Big Brown galloped Monday, with trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. and some of the colt’s owners looking on. “He’s moving as good as he ever has,” Dutrow said. THE LEARNING CHALLENGER by Robert Barnett

DIRECTIONS: A. Using each "Chaos Grid" number with its letter one time, arrange the numbers with their letters for the "Order Grid" so each vertical column, horizontal row, and two diagonals each ADD to numbers inside thick lined cells. B. Some correct numbers with their letters have been put into the "Order Grid" to get you started. Also, above the "Order Grid" is a "Decoded Message" clue. C. After you have solved the "Order Grid" doing as direction "A" says, put the let- ters from horizontal rows, from left to right, under "Decoded Message" and make words to form the answer.
