CHILDREN TEENS ADULTS CRAFT | OUTSIDE PRESENTER OPTIONAL

ADAPTATION JAPANESE FOR TEENS OR ADULTS: (ONI) MASKS If available, invite someone from Japan to AGES tell a traditional story Children 4+ years or talk about oni. Try your local Japan Society, Adaptation for teens or adults or exchange student organizations such as PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Rotary or AFS. Children create their own oni masks! Oni are mythical often portrayed as the villains of Japanese tales. Depictions of oni vary widely, but they are usually portrayed as hideous, gigantic, -like creatures with one or multiple horns, sharp claws, and wild hair. Their skin is usually red, blue, or green, and they sometimes have a third eye or extra fingers and toes. After storytime, children decorate their own oni masks while listening to Japanese Taiko music.

MATERIALS AND PREPARATION You will need: • A printer • Cardstock • Scissors • Markers or crayons • A hole punch and string or elastic • A device on which to play music Print blank masks on cardstock (see Resources for a template). While children color, stream some Japanese Taiko drumming. When finished, punch holes in the sides of the mask, and attach string or elastic.
