How to Order We welcome visits to the nursery Online: to discuss your planting scheme and www.perriehale.co.uk are happy to provide free quotations. Email: It is advisable to call and make an [email protected] appointment. (Please bear in mind we are a working nursery and as such there maybe moving vehicles/tractors etc it also advisable to wear suitable footwear). Judy, Olly & Faye Davey Ordering: All orders should be placed in advance so we can lift and pack your plants. We are a wholesale nursery but are happy to fulfill small orders. Plants may be collected from our nursery or we can arrange delivery (minimum charge £15.00 +VAT). Before you plant: The plants that you select planting scheme will vary depending on your location and the ground conditions, we are happy to advise you on what species will be suitable. Before you plant, remove all the existing weeds from your proposed site. You can either do this by using an appropriate weed spray or removal of the weeds by hand or machine if you are organic. When to plant: Late October to early April are the best months for planting bare root stock, it is important that the ground is nor waterlogged or frosted. Our pot-grown plants are a good option for planting all year round. How to plant: Plants should be planted at the same depth as they left then nursery, and then firmed in with your heel to ensure the roots make good contact with the soil, this helps prevent the plants from ‘rocking’ in the wind. The planting hole should be square for a tree, you do not need to add compost as this can encourage the tree to stay confined to the planting hole. It will benefit much more from a thick mulch after planting. Planting distances: How far apart you plant your ornamental trees will differ depending on the planting purpose. You may want a 'clump' of Birch trees for example, or maybe an 'avenue' of Flowering Cherries. It is a good idea to have a look at the species you are planting and check how big the canopy will be at maturity. For orchards in the southwest the general rule of thumb is 9 metres apart for standard orchards and 4.5 metres apart for the more easily harvested bush trees.

Maintenance: A mulch mat or a layer of well-rotted mulch should be applied after planting to help reduce competition from weeds and retain the moisture in the soil. All plants should be protected from damage by livestock, deer, rabbits and voles. We can supply various sizes of tree/shrub shelters and/or deer or rabbit fencing.

Choosing and Planting Fruit Trees

The varieties we list here are considered suitable for the southwest conditions and are happier putting up with the wet and windier weather. Please visit our website for details of the flowering periods as many varieties need cross pollination and even self fertile varieties crop better if they are cross pollinated. Generally orchards in the South West are planted 9 metres apart at 60 trees per acre. Bush trees are planted 4.5 metres.
