Soon after winning their first Camp Hollywood shag competition in 2010 they began teaching and building the shag scene in LA and southern California. Together they worked on creating new moves and patterns that have become standard for shag dancers all over the world. Jim & Nicky Based in Gloucestershire, Jim & Nicky have been teaching Swing Dancing on a weekly basis for over 20 years. Collegiate Shag is their passion and have made the dance their speciality, teaching weekly shag classes in Gloucestershire as well as teaching at many of the dance camps in the UK including Hullzapoppin, Hepcats Holiday, Rock Bottoms, Jumping at the Woodside to name but a few and have been familiar faces on the teachers line up at Twinwood. Jim and Nicky are well known for their fun and relaxed style of teaching. Teacher Line Up Peter & Aila Peter and Aila love exploring the wide range of music, styling, and speeds and moves that Shag enables. Their deep knowledge and passion for the dance has taken them teaching, performing, and DJing for shagsters all over the UK and Europe. The duo have been dancing Shag and other swing dances for over 10 years. Peter set up London's ‘Shag Pile’ after running an unofficial week of Shag in Herrang. The group exists to grow the local scene through high quality weekly classes, workshops and events. As a performer, he has danced in films including ‘Gambit’, ‘Me and Orson Welles’ and ‘Avengers 2’. Aila’s professional dance experience and training bring a solid and technical knowledge to her teaching. She is artistic director and choreographer of the internationally renowned flapper troupe 'The Bee’s Knees' and leads Shag Pile's performance troupe - The Shag Pilots! Rebecca & Adam Rebecca and Adam's Shag journey started with a chance encounter at University of Swing 2015 - after spotting another couple doing this crazy dance they were hooked, and since then have pushed themselves to master as much as they can! Despite being relative newcomers to the scene, they've already been punching above their weight, placing at Glasgow Shag Festival in the Intermediate J&J 2016, Advanced J&J 2017, and the Open J&J at Barcelona 2016 (where they also made the finals in the strictly)! Their philosophy emphasises musicality and improvisation built upon technique-driven foundations. In class they focus on the real nitty gritty concepts that make up the dance, and use them to unlock limitless possibilities for even the newest of dancers. Saturday • St Louis Shag – Adam & Rebecca St. Louis Shag started as a regional swing dance originating in St. Louis, Missouri in the 1930s, but is now beginning to spread across the globe into many swing dance communities. This Shag style could be described as a cross between Lindy Hop, Lindy Charleston and Collegiate Shag. It’s very different to the other Shags but like Collegiate, it is normally done to faster music – usually swing, boogie woogie or jump blues. It’s also great for mixing with Collegiate Shag in the same dance. This class is suitable for all levels. • Connection & Switching in Collegiate Shag – Niomi & Chott In this class, we will explore tone and connection to enable you to convey your ideas to your partner during the dance, and to take over or give away the lead when dancing with you partner. This class is suitable for all levels but it’s helpful to know the Collegiate Shag basic, as well as having an understanding of the difference between 'slows' and 'quicks' in Collegiate Shag • Carolina Shag – Taryn & Neil Carolina Shag is a partner dance that originated along the east coast of the United States in the 1940s and is primarily danced to beach music. You will learn the basics of this smooth Shag dance, which is very different to the other Shag dance styles. Let’s pretend for one hour we are on the beach with the sun shining bright and sand tickling our toes – the relaxed mood is a must for this dance. This class is suitable for all levels. Taster/Themed Classes Sunday • LA Lindy – Fancy & Steve Full of counterbalance, groove and distinctive lines, LA smooth will have you gliding across the dance floor. Come Learn the style of greats like Dean Collins, Jewel McGowan, Jean Veloz and more! • Collegiate Shag from Vintage Movie Clips – Jim & Nicky If you are keen to learn those original Shag moves from the black and white movies, then join Jim & Nicky for this class! • Peabody – Peter & Aila The Peabody is an American ballroom dance that evolved from the fast foxtrot of the ragtime era of the 1910s and 1920s. Be prepared to cover a lot of ground as this dance moves briskly around the dance floor but with a smooth, graceful flow. The Peabody is usually danced to ragtime New Orleans jazz of the late 1910s and early 1920s. Live Bands Tenement Jazz Band The Tenement Jazz band are a traditional jazz band formed in early 2018 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Brought together by their shared love of New Orleans music, and comprising musicians from various corners of Edinburgh’s vibrant jazz scene, they are on a journey of exploration back to the roots of the music that they play. Their aims are to capture the raw energy and excitement of the early jazz recordings, to find and revive lesser-heard songs and cultivate their own interpretations of these, all in order to captivate experienced jazzers, dancing persons, and uninitiated ears alike Jake Walker The Saturday night party kicks off from a band all the way from Ghent, Belgium, Jake Walker. Jamaican ginger, or in short ‘Jake’, was a long used patented medicine in the US that contained alcohol. When prohibition came around in the 1920’s, Jake became very popular for the wrong reasons. The government got notice of the abuse and banned the product. A couple of gents moonshined the booze, but unfortunately, the new Jake flavour contained chemicals that caused paralysis in the hands and legs. The numbness led sufferers to walk with a distinct manner, a.k.a. Jake Walker. Now, a hundred years later, Jake is back. Not as an illegal beverage, but as a strong flavoured swing band. These guys are cooking in pubs and clubs every week.
