Th e most rec ent was th eir inaugural Winter Reliability Trial in mid-May and wa s again a lon g rall y, nearly 190 miles over tw o da ys. Again it showe d initiative, in that it departed from th e 50 mil e round the block aft ernoon motorcycl e rally . Th e insp iration came when the branch wa s give n the oppo rtunity to resurrect compe fi­ tion for an histor ic tro phy. Th e BSA Challenge Cup was presented in 1927 by Mr C.E. Blayn ey , who wa s then BSA deal er for th e Wellington area, as a trophy for a winter re liability trial. That yea r it wa s won by Frank Stewart riding an Indian . The following year it was won by the lat e Tui Mor gan on a Harley Davidson , while in 1929, again on a Harl ey David son, Tui shared first place with Bill Liddy who rod e a 45 cu. in. (5/6 model) Harl ey David son. Th e trophy was nev er competed for again and it rem ain ed w ith Tui Morgan and Bill Liddy. Perhap s Mr Blayn ey wa s so disgusted by American machines w inning his trophy that he lost int er est. You co uld hardly blame him. Mr Liddy, now in his 80s, resid es at Wharekaka old folk s
