Applications must be submitted on form V765 and signed by the keeper of the vehicle agreeing to the terms and conditions of the V765 scheme. A V55/5 should also be filled in and a recent photograph of the vehicle confirming it as a complete entity must be included. A FEE IS NOT APPLICABLE as the vehicle is being re-registered and is not applying for first registration. b. The application must have a V765 form signed, stamped and approved by the relevant vehicle owners/enthusiasts club (for their make/type), shown on the ‘List of Vehicle Owners Clubs’ (V765/1). The club may charge a fee to process the application. c. Evidence MUST be presented with the application to link the registration number to the vehicle. Acceptable forms of evidence include:- • The original old style logbook (RF60/VE60). • Archive/Library records displaying the registration number and the chassis number authorised by the archivist clearly defining where the material was taken from. • Other pre 1983 documentary evidence linking the chassis and the registration number to the vehicle. If successful, this registration number will be allocated on a non-transferable basis. The Jensen Interceptor: Chrysler- Powered British Luxury Allan and Richard Jensen's auto business was started before World War II, which interrupted production until 1950, when their first Interceptor was made. At the time, they made Austin bodies under contract, and the first Interceptor resembled an Austin A40 (the Jensens built bodies for a string of cars that included the Volvo P1800, Sunbeam Tiger, and Austin-Healey.) The first Interceptor used a 4 liter Austin in-line six, and was produced in small numbers for over a decade. Jensen also used Nash Twin-Ignition Eight engines for a time, and the 1962 C-V8 used a Chrysler 361 B-block engine. A number of these early Jensens made their way to the US before and after World War II. The next version kept the basic C-V8 chassis, but changed styling. Initially, an in-house convertible design was planned, but chief engineer Kevin Beattie argued for an Italian flavor. Proposals were taken from different design houses, with Carozzeria Touring winning out with a fastback coupe incorporating a rounded tail, but that house was unable to finalize the design. Vignale, instead, provided prototype and initial production bodies, rendered in steel, on CV-8 chassis sent to them by Jensen. Turnaround was quick - about four months - so the new Interceptors could be shown in London in October 1966. Jensen later used the jigs and tools, which were sent by Vignale to the West Bromwich factory. The body had two doors, a low beltline, and fishbowl rear glass in a handsome 2+2 design. -

Competition and the Workplace in the British Automobile Industry. 1945-1988 Steven To!!iday Harvard University This paper considers the impact of industrial relations on competitive performance. Recent changesin markets and technology have increased interest in the interaction of competitive strategies and workplace management and in particular have highlighted problems of adaptability in different national systems. The literature on the British automobile industry offers widely divergent views on these issues. One which has gained widespread acceptance is that defects at the level of industrial relations have seriously impaired company performance. Versions of this view have emanated from a variety of sources. The best known are the accountsof CPRS and Edwardes [3, 10], which argue that the crisis of the industry stemmed in large part from restrictive working practices, inadequate labor effort, excessive labor costs, and worker militancy. From a different vantage point, Lewchuk has recently argued that the long-run post-War production problems of the industry should be seen as the result of a conflict between the requirements of new American technology for greater direct management control of the production processand the constraints resulting from shopfloor "production institutions based on earlier craft technology." This contradiction was only resolved by the reassertion of managerial control in the 1980s and the "belated" introduction of Fordist techniques of labor management [13, 91. On the other hand Williams et al. have argued that industrial relations have been of only minor significance in comparison to other causes of market failure [30, 31], and Marsden et al. [15] and Willman and Winch [35] both concur that the importance of labor relations problems has been consistently magnified out of proportion. -

The Sprite That Once Was and Could Have
THE SPRITE THAT ONCE WAS Bill Meade AND COULD HAVE BEEN… Watsonville, California Contributing Editor Not everyone is aware that the Austin-Healey Sprite, originally designed by Gerry Coker, was to have been a sleek and aggressive-bodied sports car. The car was planned from the beginning to be econom- ical enough for almost anyone to own, and Donald Healey wanted this car to be a great choice for the young weekend racer on a budget. Even though Donald gave Gerry a very limiting proposed chassis around which the body had to fit, Coker’s design was outstanding in its original concept. The car was not allowed an opening trunk and the bonnet had to be a simple full tilt. These limitations were intended to keep the cost low, and the budget restrictions affected what the design could be. The genius of Gerry Coker’s design ability came through in a shape that embodied a Testa Rossa- inspired front grill, combined with classic, rounded shapes in the front fenders and the rear end. The hood was long, smooth and sloped to the forward-angled front grill. The headlights were to be re- cessed and mechanically raised. In simple terms, the car was a knockout! Unfortunately, the reality of production costs caused BMC to abandon the design elements that were the heart of the car’s sharp look. First to go were the recessed headlights, and in there place the infa- mous “bugeye” light pods were permanently affixed. Next, the shark-like grill was set upright, giving the car a milder, “smiling” look.
