47th SCHELDEPRIJS July 28 Eighty two riders show up in Bar Derby for the 47th Scheldeprijs. Soon after the start Jan Zagers and Jos Theuns are part of a crash and will need to leave the race. During the final the winner of 1958, Raymond Vrancken tries to break away. Schotenaar Emiel Severeyns replicates but must release fairly quickly. Wim van Est, Jos Sels and Jos Mariën are the first to join him. The four take a one minute lead but Rik van Looy pulls the peloton and closes the gap to the four leaders. In the final lap Willy Butzen breaks away and wins the 47th Scheldeprijs with a small lead. ROADMAP Schoten, Brecht, Rijkevorsel, Hoogstraten, Beerse, Lichtaart, Kasterlee, Geel, Mol, Tessenderlo, Olen, Herentals, Nijlen, Massenhoven, Broechem, Ranst, Wommelgem, Borsbeek, Wijnegem, Schoten (160 km) and three local laps of 17 km, 211 km total. Taking their cue from the original book town, Hay-on-Wye, in Wales, rural French communities once in danger of disappearing have reclaimed their economic future and their heritage. Hughes: Branding Brussels Musically: Cosmopolitanism and Nationalism in the Interwar Years (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) In Belgium, constructions of musical life in Brussels between the World Wars varied widely: some viewed the city as a major musical center, and others framed the city as a peripheral space to its larger neighbors. Both views, however, based the city’s identity on an intense interest in new foreign music, with works by Belgian composers taking a secondary importance. This modern and cosmopolitan concept of cultural achievement offered an alternative to the more traditional model of national identity as being built solely on creations by native artists sharing local traditions. Such a model eluded a country with competing ethnic groups: the Francophone Walloons in the south and the Flemish in the north. Openness to a wide variety of music became a hallmark of the capital’s cultural identity. As a result, the forces of Belgian cultural identity, patriotism, internationalism, interest in foreign culture, and conflicting views of modern music complicated the construction of Belgian cultural identity through music. By focusing on the work of the four central people in the network of organizers, patrons, and performers that sustained the art music culture in the Belgian capital, this dissertation challenges assumptions about construction of musical culture.

On May 13, 1909, the Giro’s first peloton of 127 riders (41 of the enrollees didn’t show up) met at the Piazzale Loreto in downtown Milan where La Gazzetta’s offices Red Devil, were situated. The eight-stage race went from Milan to Bologna and onward to Chieti, Naples, Rome, Florence, Genoa and Turin, returning to Milan on the 30th. Riders would cover 2,445 kilometers over eight stages, an average stage length of 306 kilometers, the Fist, not far from the Tour’s average. This was to be the shortest Giro ever. It should be noted that in the early years of bike racing distances were approximate. The various lengths we have for the first Giro, 2408, 2448, and 2445 kilometers—each from a dif- ferent but respected Italian writer—are all within the expected and the range of accuracy of the age. To minimize cheating and confusion, each of the riders was King of Mud photographed at the start for later comparison by the judges. Just as in the first couple of editions of the Tour, the Giro would allow several days of recovery between each stage. Als hij op aanraden van zijn ploegdokter een keertje ontbijt zonder koffie, voelt hij zich niet goed in Zzijn vel. De koffieverslaving van Devolder is geen uitzondering in het huidige peloton. Vlak voor de start van een wedstrijd draait de espressomachine in menige ploegbus op volle toeren. Wie het koffieritueel verbrodt, zal het geweten hebben. Ploegmaat Nico Sijmens probeert Devolder in een Italiaans hotel te jennen door een flinke snuf zout in zijn koffie te gieten. Zijn weerwraak is niet zoet, maar zuur. Een drinkbus water wordt gekruid met een wolkje balsamico. Sijmens door- BEKNOPT PALMARES ziet de revanche van Devolder, maar laat diens KORTRIJK, 29/08/1979 koffie in het vervolg onaangeroerd.
