This year’s incredible schools program line-up features Danny Katz, Mitch Vane, Zohab Khan, Arielle Cottingham, JC Burke, Nicole Hayes, Bruce Pascoe, Ursula Duborsarsky, Chris Collin and Brooke Maggs. They will present a variety of workshops, talks and performances as described below. The full timetable is on the final page.

We are proud to present this program free of charge to all schools within a 150km radius of Albury. As places are limited schools are encouraged to book early. Bookings open Friday 19 May. Most sessions are held at the Albury LibraryMuseum, with some sessions at Lavington Library, Retro Café and MAMA as indicated.

Ph: 6023 8333  To ensure fair access to all schools, first round bookings (19 May – 9 June) are limited to 150 places per school. Unlimited bookings available after this time.  Confirmation of bookings and numbers is required 3 weeks in advance – we will email you requesting confirmation.  Your earliest advice of any changes to numbers is required so that places can be offered to those on waiting lists.  Groups must be able to attend the entire session being booked as early exiting is disruptive to the facilitator and others attending the session.  Please contact us with any queries – we’re happy to help.

The above authors and more will teach workshops, tell stories and take part in conversations and panel sessions. Primary School Sessions

Ursula Duborsarsky Sessions for years: K – 6

Ursula Dubosarsky wanted to be a writer from of six and is now the author of over 50 books for children and young adults. Her titles have won several national prizes including the NSW, Victorian, South Australian and Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards. Apart from fiction and picture books such as Too Many Elephants in This House, she has also written the non-fiction Word Spy books about the English language. Her latest novel is The Blue Cat, set in Sydney in 1942. She lives in Sydney with her family.

Too Many Elephants Interactive presentation: Years K-2 Based on picture books illustrated by Andrew Joyner: One Little Goat (new in 2017), Tim and Ed, The Terrible Plop and Too Many Elephants in this House, Ursula presents a lively and interactive story reading session, complete with acting out and puppets. Coco Carlomagno Interactive presentation: Years 3-4 A lively session based on the funny Coco Carlomagno guinea pig detective, puzzle storybook series illustrated by Terry Denton. The Word Spy Quiz Interactive presentation: Years 5-6 Ursula plays the quizmaster in this session based on the three Word Spy non-fiction books about the English language, illustrated by Tohby Riddle. Chris Collin Sessions for years: K – 4

Chris Collin is an award-winning author of wacky, rhyming children’s books and lives on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. He has successfully published three books, all of which are well utilised in schools and libraries throughout Australia.

His first book Funky Chicken: A Bushy Tale of Crocs and Chooks is in the Queensland year three curriculum for poetry and was short-listed in the 2014 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards. His latest title, Funky Chicken: Chooks in Space, has gone one step further in winning the 2016 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards!

Chris’ role is to bring fun (and funkiness!) to the world through his books and presentations, encouraging readers of all ages to 'read for the joy of reading!'

Chooks in Space Interactive presentation: Years 3-4 Chris presents his Funky Chicken books with readings, poetry, slideshow, puppetry, acting and dancing. Danny Katz & Mitch Vane Sessions for years: 5 – 8

The dynamic creators of the Little Lunch series of books which inspired the ABC TV hit series, demonstrate their collaborative style and show how their ideas, inspirations, words and pictures add up to some very funny and relatable adventures. Mitch Vane

Mitch Vane has had a long career as an illustrator and artist and has illustrated many children's books including: Bed Tails by Meredith Costain, The Deep End by Ursula Dubosarsky, and most recently Our (Last) Trip to the Market by Lorin Clarke.

Mitch often collaborates with her partner Danny Katz. Her cartoons appeared with his weekly humour column in The Age for many years and they have created many children's books as a writer/illustrator team, including the much loved Little Lunch series.

Mitch currently divides her time between painting and illustration projects.

A lot can happen in 15 minutes Interactive presentation: Years 5-6 & 7-8 Mitch demonstrates illustration techniques she uses to create humour while discussing the creation of characters from the Little Lunch series. Students collaborate with Mitch to create characters in a funny scenario and have a go at creating a Little Lunch character of their own. Danny Katz

Danny Katz is a Canadian-born author and newspaper columnist who writes for The Age, the Sydney Morning Herald and . He is the Modern Guru in Good Weekend Magazine. Danny is passionate about getting young people reading and writing for pleasure (it’s his obsession!). He’s also passionate about The Beatles, good comedy, hotel breakfast buffets, any kind of cause that makes people’s lives better, and canned beetroot.

Using humour and real life to tell stories Interactive presentation: Years 5-6 & 7-8 Using extracts from his humorous books and newspaper columns, Danny shows young people how their own lives are an endless source of material for stories and how humour is a great way to tell those stories. Bruce Pascoe Sessions for years: 4 – 7

Bruce Pascoe is of Bunurong, Yuin and Tasmanian heritage. His recent non-fiction book, Dark Emu, Black Seeds: agriculture or accident? won the 2016 NSW Premier’s Book of the Year. His YA novel, Mrs Whitlam is shortlisted for the 2017 Children’s Book Council Award. Other recent novels include Bloke, Chainsaw File, Sea Horse and Fog a Dox which won the Prime Minister’s Award for Young Adult Literature in 2013.

His roles include being a board member of First Languages Australia; past Secretary Bidwell-Maap Aboriginal Nation; Elder in Residence, Australian Film Television and Radio School; and Professor of Indigenous Knowledge at UTS. With his wife Lyn Harwood he published and edited Australian Short Stories magazine from 1982-1999. Bruce lives in Far East Gippsland and has two children and three grandchildren.

Dark Emu, Black Seeds: agriculture or accident? Talk: Years 4 – 7 Bruce is currently working on a children’s version of Dark Emu. With power point images that help tell a different story to long held beliefs about Aboriginal hunter-gather societies, Bruce will talk about Aboriginal agriculture, why we ignored it and how we can re-discover it. Bruce presents important revelations and insights gleaned from explorers’ journals and the land itself, that children (and adults!) find truly fascinating. Horses and Seahorses Talk: Years 5 – 6 Animals, adventure, nature and family feature in Bruce’s most recent novels, Mrs Whitlam and Sea Horse, which also explore themes of identity and belonging. A love of words Workshop: Years 5 – 6 Bruce talks about his love of words and how he likes to play with words. In this workshop students will identify some of their favourite words and use them as inspiration to write stories. Albury LibraryMuseum Friday 1.00pm–2.00pm, Year 5-6, Limit 25

JC (Jane) Burke Sessions for years: 9 – 12

JC (Jane Catherine) Burke lives in Sydney. She trained as a nurse at RPAH and later specialised in Oncology where she worked in Bone Marrow Transplant Units in Sydney and London. Burke’s first words weren’t written until she was 35 years old. They became her debut novel White Lies written under the guidance of an ASA Mentorship and was awarded a CBCA Notable Book.

Since then, Burke has published many acclaimed and award winning novels with numerous international translations. The Story of Tom Brennan won the CBCA Book of the Year for Older Readers and is currently on the NSW HSC English Syllabus. Pig Boy won the Ned Kelly Award for Best Crime Fiction. Her latest novel The Things We Promise is set in 1990 during the Aids Pandemic.

How JC Burke finds a story Talk: Years 9 – 10 Curiosity Is a Writer’s Best Friend. As a kid and still now, JC Burke likes to question things. Why? How? Then what? This is where she finds her stories. The Story of Tom Brennan Talk: Years 10 – 12 JC Burke will analyse her own text, discussing what the other characters mean to Tom’s journey and who Tom is at the end of the book. Nicole Hayes Sessions for years: 7 – 9

Nicole Hayes is an award winning author, a writing instructor and podcaster. Her books include YA novels, The Whole of My World (Random House, 2013), One True Thing (Random House, 2015) -- winner of the Children’s Peace Literature Award, CBCA Notable Book, and shortlisted for the WA Premier’s Literary Award among others -- and her recent release, A Shadow’s Breath (Random House, 2017), which is already garnering acclaim. Last year she co-edited an anthology of writing, From the Outer: Footy Like You’ve Never Heard It (2016) with Alicia Sometimes, both of whom form part of the ground-breaking all-female Australian football podcast, The Outer Sanctum (now on the ABC). Nicole and Alicia have also published a new football book about women’s AFL – A Footy Girl’s Guide to the Stars of 2017 (Nero Books, 2017). Brooke Maggs Sessions for years: 8 – 9

Brooke is a Director of Burning Glass Creative, a company that offers narrative design, game design and project management services to games, VR and other creative industries. She is a narrative designer working with The Voxel Agents on The Gardens Between and regularly speaks on games and storytelling at conferences and in articles. Brooke is writing a science fiction novel for which she was shortlisted for the Ray Koppe Writer’s Residency and was awarded a Residency at the Varuna House. Her other writing includes academic research in creative writing practice and the intersection between literature and digital storytelling.

Storytelling in games: how to make an adventure puzzle game Talk & activity: Years 8 – 9 Brooke shares her experience as a writer on The Gardens Between, a game with no text or speech. Working in a team of game developers is fun and challenging and Brooke provides insights into the day-to-day of a game studio and the process of storytelling in games.

Narrative design for the game requires the team to consider the environment: the colour, set-design and key story objects in each level or ‘garden’ that capture a unique memory between the main characters. Using these ideas students will work on paper to create a garden or level of their own. They’ll also play a demo of The Gardens Between. Retro Café Friday 11.00am–12.30pm, Year 8-9, Limit 20

Zohab Zee Khan Sessions for years: 9 – 12

A fourth generation Australian of Pakistani heritage and raised in rural NSW, Zohab co-founded The Pakistan Poetry Slam. Since 2006 Zohab has been building a formidable career as a spoken word artist. In 2014 he was Poetry Slam Champion and later that year he was a finalist in the International Poetry Slam in Madrid. Zohab is also a didgeridoo player, harmonica beat-boxer and hip-hop artist. He has toured Australia, Asia, the Middle East and Europe to sell-out crowds. He is also an educator inspiring a new generation of leaders through personal development, creative writing and performance-based workshops. Poetry Slam Bootcamp Workshop: Years 11 – 12 Zohab Khan launches straight into this fast paced workshop with performance activities followed by writing exercises. Arielle Cottingham Sessions for years: 9 – 12

Arielle is an Afro-Latina poet, performance artist, and dancer. She began performing spoken word in 2014 while studying at the University of Melbourne and went on to become the 2016 Australian Poetry Slam Champion. Since then she has developed a full-time career as a spoken-word poet including working as creative producer of Melbourne’s Slamalamadingdong.

She released her first chapbook, The Tarantist's Soapbox, in April 2016. Her forthcoming book, Curls and Other Wars, will be released in 2017. She currently resides in San Antonio, Texas, where she continues to write and perform.

Arielle's writing probes the territory of the personal as the political, dealing heavily with themes of identity, heritage, history, and the roles they play in immediate, everyday interactions. Her performances incorporate elements of dance and physical theatre to create multidisciplinary pieces that have been described as both elegant and profoundly moving.
